Surprised and honored to have one of my photos chosen for Honorable Mention in this year's Nature Conservancy global photo contest. A lot of amazing photos out there. Definitely worth the time to take a look.

Bold white eyebrow. Warm brown above, buffy-orange underparts. Slightly decurved bill. Tail is about as long as body and often cocked up. Usually in hiding in dense vegetation, tangled understory, or brush piles in forested areas. Nests in peculiar places around backyards, such as tucked in a drainpipe or grill. Occasionally feeds on suet or mealworms at feeding stations. Listen for loud, ringing song and variety of calls. Unlike House Wren they are not migratory and stay nearby their breeding grounds year-round. (eBird)

We went to Presqu'ile Provincial Park for a day of birding this past weekend, hoping for an influx of shorebirds. No luck though. In fact, very quiet everywhere, bird-wise. Just as we were leaving the lighthouse area, a very loud call shattered the air - a Carolina Wren! We had not seen one this year, so we tracked him down by following his voice and there he was, right at eye-level, singing for all he was worth. A second bird was responding behind us, but we couldn't find that one.

Golden shadows cast on the front of apartments by the setting sun, contrasting with the side of the building which has a mural of stormy seas painted on it.

Even side on, it is very symmetrical, a fine example of Carolean architecture from the 17th Century.
A garden gargoyle enjoying the company of a phalaenopsis orchid. Gargoyles decorated the tops of Gothic churches and medieval buildings for centuries. Stone carved gargoyles served as drainpipes diverting rainwater and protecting medieval buildings from dump. Many gargoyles have a demonic look and are thought to be either demonic sinners or guardians of the house scaring off unwanted demons and spirits at night. Which theory is correct largely depends on which documentary would you believe more, ‘Ghostbusters’ or Disney ‘Gargoyles’ series.
We saw this kind of charming garden gargoyles first on a narrowboat in the city couple years ago (www.flickr.com/photos/sergeysmirnov/53109224422/), and liked it a lot. It took some time however to find its identical twin. His conversion to the orchid lover and a flower protector took only a minute. Bath, BANES, England, UK
