Alexander von Humboldt, Tenerife 1799:

"Even though we knew about Franqui's dragontree from previous travellers, it's enormous thickness amazed us. We were told that this tree, mentioned in several ancient documents, served as a boundary mark and already in the 15th century was as enormous as it is today. We calculated it's height to be about 50 to 60 feet; it's circumference a little above it's roots measured 45 feet. The trunk is divided into many branches, which rise up in the form of a chandelier and end in tufts of leaves similar to the Mexican yucca.

It's juice is called dragon's blood, which nuns at La Laguna soak toothpicks in, which are praised for preserving gums."

The region around Las Tricias on the island La Palma (Canary Islands) is a nice region for hiking with beautiful views.

The strange tree on the left is a Canary Islands dragon tree (Dracaena draco). This shot gives an impression of the typical flora of the northern part of La Palma.
