Close up of the draft door of an old Britannia boiler located behind the historic glasshouses in the St. Kilda Botanical Gardens (www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/st_kilda_botanic.htm).
Made some time between the 1920s to the mid 1930s by the Ideal National Radiator Company Ltd in Hull, East Yorkshire (a company which still exists today: idealheating.com/uk-manufacturing/about-ideal.php), this type of open-fire boiler was generally designed to produce a continuous supply of heat or hot water, presumably for the nearby glasshouses.
The full structure features a large brick chimney, two flues (stamped with the words 'Keep Flues Clean'), the above draft door, and a firebox opening (to which fuel would have once been added).
