It appears good stuff happens only in the afternoon, an hour or so before sunset.
A quick drive-by of Patriot Rail's DQ&E headquarters at DeQueen, AR resulted in trustworthy intel that a crew was headed for Dierks to bring a train west. Sure enough, I arrived coincident with them starting up this three-unit consist, sans Patriot Rail stickers, including ex-CMER/CWWR GP38-2 D-28, and GP40s D-24 and D-23. Here, they've just tied on to a cut of cars and have some work to do before heading for DeQueen. You can just make out the conductor on the ground, behind the tree to the right.
After about 30 minutes of back and forth, they'll start west.
By the way, the one train west out of DeQueen for interchange with Kiamichi at Valliant, OK is apparently a night move.

Late summer 78 found me in Waseca MN chasing Alco's on CNW. The ex M&StL line that crossed the Alco line here was home to some interesting power in its own right. F's and geeps were common. On this scorching late summer evening an eastbound has stopped south of the Alco line and a geep from the nearby yard is working the rear of the train. The crew took the opportunity to bail off and head to a nearby DQ for a quick ice cream cone. 212, 213 and 4390 lead the way on the old Louie. A rescan of one I posted a couple years ago that I wasn't very happy with.

Though many small walk-up-only Dairy Queens remain, relatively few of them sport the "broken-gable" roofline seen for decades on larger DQs.
