We had only to show Wolfgang a large weed in Brad's garden and he went to work. He dug vigorously, and pulled it with his teeth, until it could be removed.

What a worker! Unfortunately, his limit is one large weed per day.

This is my friend Johnna who owns the black and tan doxie.

Our Doxie is broken hearted and very upset if we try to leave her behind when we go ATVing, but everything I wrap her in she excapes from and then shivers from the cold.

I came up with this on the spot, putting her head in a thermal jacket sleeve.

Mom had this ramp custom-made for Murphy.

As you know, dachshunds have to take care of their backs, especially as they get older. He was always jumping up and down my bed (he thinks he's fantastic in gymnastics, lol).

Anyway, he refuses to use the ramp and continues to jump up and down the bed. Is there any way to train him to use the ramp?

1956: Kurt Hawlitschek and his wife and family at their home in Germany, I believe in Munich. Kurt was the son of Karl Hawlitschek and his kindly wife, whom I had visited at their home in the village of Tomerdingen, near Ulm, in 1954. Karl had been among a party of German soldiers taken prisoner by the Russians during W.W. I, and he had eventually been repatriated to Germany at the end of the war, with the ship carrying them making a longish stop in Honolulu en route home. The family was Volksdeutsch, of German origin, domiciled in Czechoslovakia. Karl had been, in his teens, a member of the Hitlerjugend, or Hitler Youth. Despite that, the

family were delightful hosts during my visit to them in 1954.

For all you dachshund lovers out there --

We learned an important lesson in dachshund health this week when Darwin was stung by an insect while in our back yard. He was fine when I got home, but after coming in from outside, he was panting, lethargic and not interested in food (even cheese!). He wouldn't move off his blanket & at first I was afraid of back problems, but when I came upstairs from changing the laundry, he had disappeared.

I found him under my desk (next to a HUGE pile of vomit) with his little nose crushed against the carpet and his tongue sticking out just a tad. And his tongue was gray.

Off to the vet we went.

Turns out he was stung by some sort of insect (we found the bite mark) and had gone into shock. Fortunately he just needed some Benadryl and some fluids, but the vet said that noticing that his tongue had changed color was a really good observation. Apparently that's the doggie equivalent of a human turning pale.

I am pleased to say that Darwin is back to his happy little self -- rosy of tongue, waggy of tail & hopeful of cheese!

I love the way Jimmy Dean likes to snuggle up close to either Link or Frank.

Mocha heard the rumor about Orion's crush( www.flickr.com/photos/mnkaren/2173333736/ ), so she had to check him out. Hmm she found two handsome doxies! Orion and Toby!
