NEVER! Downtown Nashville Tennessee!! Pinnacle Building with newer building up and coming in foreground.

I captured this image while heading out to enjoy a morning walk along the Hike-and-Bike Trail around part of Lady Bird Lake. This view is on the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge with a setting extending to the southeast. Notable features in the image include the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge, the Sail building, and the currently under construction and tallest building in Austin, with a skycrane present. But what drew me into the setting was the lone person rowing at the time that morning. I wanted to put a focus on that person and worked to have that in the more open portion of the lake waters.

A view extending to the east-southeast while walking along the Congress Ave Bridge in Austin. I had several thoughts as I worked to compose this image. One was to attempt a balance the image with the buildings themselves and the reflections caught on Lady Bird Lake. Another was to close down on the aperture so I could bring more of a starburst look with the sun. I also wanted to use the now tallest building in Austin to have the sun seemingly right above on the top of that building. The rest was just aligning the image to bring out the best view of the buildings to my front.

While walking along the Hike-and-Bike Trail on the south side of Lady Bird Lake with a view extending to the northeast to multiple tall buildings as part of the Austin skyline. My thought in composing this image was to use a wide angle focal length as I knew that I wanted to use the perspective tool in DxO PhotoLab 8 to bring out a straightened view with the buildings. Another thing I did have to keep in mind was not blowing any highlights with the sun shining that morning while still being able to pull the more shadowed areas later on and postproduction.

While walking along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail with a view extending to the east across still waters present with Lady Bird Lake. What I had wanted to do in composing this image was to capture a view using the bridge to frame a setting beyond with Lady Bird Lake and some of the Austin skyline off the distance. I wanted to capture a more or less balanced-on view with the building themselves and the reflections. The rest was getting a good meter to not blow any of the highlights from the sun brightened areas while still being able to pull the more shadowed areas under the bridge later in post-production.

While walking the Hike and Bike Trail around parts of Lady Bird Lake with a view looking to the east. With this image, I wanted to focus on the calm waters of Lady Bird Lake that had reflections of the downtown skyline. Some buildings are older and more recognizable, while others are under construction. My thinking and composing this image was to capture a balanced view with the reflections on the waters and the downtown buildings. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Blue Hour, during in the early morning hours, in Downtown Los Angeles. Rooftop view looking South East just before the sun added the bright colors to the sky. This area is changing rapidly. It's an exciting time for Downtown. The skyline will have many new additions in the next few years. The blue hour goes well with the lights of the buildings. Having the lights still on really adds to these kinds of pics.

While walking the Hike and Bike Trail around parts of Lady Bird Lake with a view looking to the northeast. My thinking in composing this image was to use the nearby plant-life as a view beyond with the lake itself and then the tall downtown buildings with the Austin skyline. This was a little after sunrise and one can see the lighting of the skies in the background. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 4 that I’d recently purchased after moving away from Capture NX2. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 4 where I added a Polarization and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.

An image captured while walking around the downtown area one morning on a walk around parts of Lady Bird Lake on the Hike and Bike Trail. The view includes Austin City Hall as well as nearby buildings, with some under construction. This was a little after sunrise and one can see the lighting of the skies in the background. In composing the image, I decided to go with as wide an angle view as I could. My thinking was to use DxO Perspective tool to straighten out the lines of the building as they came together with the distortion. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 4 that I’d recently purchased after moving away from Capture NX2. I waited and waited for that taxi to leave....but he just kept watching what I was doing and didn't seem to get the hint.....I don't know, perhaps it adds to the overall image.

The Third Avenue Bridge and downtown Minneapolis.

The Winter of 2008/2009 has been brutal-even by Minnesota standards.

Too Cold for Too Long,

and Too Much Snow!

fyi....what appears to be clouds is actually clouds of steam emanating from various places downtown....brrrrrr!

Downtown Minneapolis and the Mississippi River seen from Nicollet Island on a frozen Winter night. The river is only partially frozen. You can see the blurred reflection on the still-open water, while the clear image in the foreground is reflected off sheer ice.

While walking around the downtown area in Austin with a view looking to the northwest to a nearby, newly constructed building with its glass-mirror reflection of another building. My thought in composing this image was to use a portrait orientation and focus on capturing as much of the reflection and filling that with the image. Some portions of nearby buildings would also be included, but the focus would be on the building reflection. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

While walking around Austin and then crossing Congress Ave around 6th Street with a view looking north to the capitol building off in the distance. My thinking in composing this image was to more or less be centered in the street and using the street as a leading line into the image. Buildings on both sides would be that focus for the viewer to look ahead. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

A bitterly cold, but beautiful Winter morning in Minneapolis.

The view from the Northwest side of town about two and a half miles out of downtown. We are directly overhead the "Charlotte Pike" neighborhood. From here, you can see "Capitol Hill", the Tennessee Tower, Fifth Third Tower, Icon Tower, AT&T Tower, Renaissance Hotel, and LP Field among many things. The view is towards the east/southeast.

A colorful dawning over downtown Minneapolis.

For the most part, from 5:00 to 6:00 Saturday morning it was just the fishermen and the photographer.

Most everyone else missed the show!

While walking the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail with a view looking to the northeast to buildings on the other side of Lady Bird Lake and the Colorado River. My thinking in composing this image was the capture a view looking across the lake waters with the buildings as the main focus of the image capture. The building under construction would be the most likely point to catch a viewer’s attention, given its somewhat different design compared to others with the Austin skyline.

While walking the Hike and Bike Trail around parts of Lady Bird Lake with a view looking to the north. My thinking in composing this image was to use the nearby trees as a view beyond with the Union Pacific railroad bridge then leading off to the tall, downtown condo buildings off in the distance.

I don't think I've ever had a chance to fly into Love Field, much less in the early morning hours where I happened to catch this setting with the downtown skyscrapers of Dallas as a backdrop to the airport. That haze across the urban landscape definitely brought out more of the golden, yellow sunlight that morning as the plane made a turn to line up for landing.

another shot from a couple weekends ago at Lake Harriet....taken moments after a passing shower, and still several minutes before sunrise.

you need to have uptown to have downtown...

so no other cities has "down"town besides NY really.

This longexposure view of downtown Minneapolis and the Mississippi River, taken from a railroad bridge, was cut short by....an approaching train!

While on a flight out of Austin to Denver, not long after takeoff. The view is looking to the north and down as the airplane I was on made a turn. The setting below is toward the southeast part of Austin; one can even see the runways in the upper right portion of the image. What caught my attention with this image was more than just the view, it was a chance to capture that sweeping view with the turn and bring out a sense of depth from the height on the airplane.

Beautiful blue hour sunset view of downtown Chicago and the river.
