Statue of Pope Leo III in front of the Cathedral of St. Agata, Piazza del Doumo, Catania, Sicily.
Leo III was Pope from 795 to 816 and it is best known for crowning Charlemagne as the first Holy Roman Emperor. He was canonized in 1673.

The view of Florence from the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) is quite amazing. I climbed hundreds of steps at the Campanile early one morning for this shot.
Today is really a gorgeous day, and Domo-kun agrees heartily from his new home! :^D

I thought that this would be an appropriate photo for today, Holy Friday. We call it the "Long Friday" here in Sweden.
This photo I took in the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower). I first got to know the church as Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, and it seems that a short version is just the Doumo.
A magnificient church from the outside but equally beautiful on the inside. Especially the paintings on the inside of the huge dome.
Even though I am not religious, I enjoyed being allowed to enter this catholic church, and watch the beauty of the inside.
Photo from the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Florence was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of that era. Florence is the most populous city in Tuscany, with 383,084 inhabitants in 2013, and over 1,520,000 in its metropolitan area.
Almost 600 years in the building process, spanning history. 520 feet long, 302 feet wide and 354 feet tall, like many churches we saw..tourists were more than worshipers. [now did i see any worshipers??]

Siena's Gothic cathedral is a marvelous mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Built in the twelfth century in the Romanesque style, in the thirteenth century this seemed hopelessly outmoded to the city's ambitious leaders, so they ordered that it be converted to a Gothic construction. And so they built, altered and added on. Well, it kind of represents the Italian temper :-)
What a master piece
Don't you love the tourists with their smart phones and iPads....hehe that's actually what I like most about the image.

Above the three portals with stories of Mary and the three lunettes with, from left to right, Charity, the Madonna with the Patron Saints of of the city, and Faith.
The first part of the novel is set in Florence.
Lucy Honeychurch is touring Italy with her overbearing older cousin and chaperone, Charlotte Bartlett.
The novel opens with their complaints about the hotel,"The Pension Bertolini." Their primary concern is that although a "room with a view" has been promised to each of them, their rooms instead look over a courtyard.

Lucy Honeychurch está de gira por Italia con una prima mayor que ella y autoritaria que ejerce de carabina, Charlotte Barlett.
La novela comienza con sus quejas en el hotel, la Pensión Bertolini. Su preocupación principal consiste en que aunque se les prometió “una habitación con vistas” para cada una, sus habitaciones, en cambio dan a un patio.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is Italy's oldest active shopping mall. It was designed in 1861 and built by architect Giuseppe Mengoni between 1865 and 1867.
The Duomo of Milan is one of the biggest cathedrals of the world. Close to is we can visit the famous galleries of Victor Emmanuel.
