43144 Building A Greater West + 43190 leads the 0645hrs Great Western Railway service from Penzance to Ealing Broadway (via Westbury) along the seawall near Dawlish Warren.

The train rides, visiting, and a closed highway all conspired to delay our return to the river near Prairie du Chien. The sun was sinking quickly toward the Iowa bluffs when we set up at Lock and Dam 9, Lynxville. Thankfully BNSF provided one train after a short wait. An eastbound would have actually been better but it was nice to see an EMD on the point of this V train. May 27, 2023.
Art is riding on GP9 #302 on train #438 as he meets train #245 with the 299 on the point. This shot was taken on the double track between Glendale Yard and Grand Ave in Milwaukee, probably not the best neighborhood, so his vantage point is much safer that being a railfan on the overpass. This line is now single track and is used by the WSOR. The 299 is pulling hard and is leaning nicely into the curve. Date is 4-8-77 Art Anderson photo - My collection
Canadian Pacific grain train hits the doubletrack Santa Fe diamond as it heads west on the Indiana Harbor Belt.
Norfolk Southern (former Southern Railway) out of service CTC main line track view along the route between Asheville, NC & Spartanburg, SC, via Saluda, North Carolina, October 2002. Just ahead by the block signal the CTC system takes effect on this line where the line goes into a double track operation. This location is south of Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Crawling up to the crossing, IC 1031 gains an extra splash of color on the nose, courtesy of the block signals at Church Road. Not only was it a lovely summer evening but Byron Hill is a great place for the last chase of the day. It's easy to get ahead of the train without driving another 50 miles and the blue hour action can be recorded without motion blur, if you're so inclined. July 20, 2024.
Well, tried my luck again at the DeKalb Coaling Tower on the Union Pacific's Geneva subdivision, quite a crew there tonight awaiting the sun to set. Some thin clouds really added to this shot.
Just after sunset, UP's Pocatello, Idaho, to North Platte, Nebraska mixed freight drops downgrade into Buford with UP 6810, 8332, 6576, 6378, & 7063 on the point. A beautiful evening on Sherman Hill.

The second section of Santa Fe's San Francisco Chief rounds a curve at allowable track speed near the Waxdale oil field in 1965. The F7 A-B-B-A power leads a variety of head-end equipment including a mail container flatcar, and hi-level cars reassigned from the El Capitan pool. The SF Chief also carried sleepers on its journey — dropping some off and picking up others along the way — providing service to cities in Texas as well as to travelers between Chicago and California's Bay Area.

Ex Southern railways King Arthur class No. 777 Sir Lamiel is seen powering towards Woodthorpe on the Great Central railway with a loughborough-Leicester north passenger service. I have photoshopped a lineside photographer out of the image who was walking down the track at the time the photo was taken.
Back when I called Fountain City home it was unusual to see an eastbound using track one. It either meant there was a long-range overtake happening between Trevino and Winona Jct. or an eastbounder was avoiding an Alma coal train that was arriving or departing from Dairyland Power. Now with full CTC installed it's not that unusual at all with both tracks signalled in both directions and power crossovers at the dispatchers disposal.

After the conclusion of the AAPRCO's 2015 convention in San Antonio, the PV's that converged in San Antonio had to head home. Here, eight of them tag along on the rear of the Sunset Limited as it rolls through Sugar Land southwest of Houston. AMTK 145 had pulled the private cars to San Antonio for the convention and was tacked onto the head end of train #2 there this morning.

I was walking back to the office and came across this scene in downtown Minneapolis. The middle unit of this stadium-bound LRT train left the rails and stopped fouling both tracks. The lead unit has been uncoupled and moved clear of 2nd Ave. If there's any good news here, it's that often trains pass each other at this location moving 20-30mph, Thankfully the south track was empty when this happened. November 30, 2017.
Here we are at Rochelle, Illinois looking Eastbound. The now UP Geneva Subdivision is to the the left, and the BNSF Aurora Subdivision to the right. When this picture was taken the C&NW still owned and operated the Geneva Subdivision, and if you look straight ahead, you'll notice the open area where the Rochelle Rail Park resides today.
With large silver letters proudly proclaiming "SOUTHERN PACIFIC," train No. 99, the San Francisco-bound Coast Daylight, passes an oil field in the early 1960s.

Norfolk Southern (former Southern Railway) out of service CTC double track main line "S" curve that is located between Asheville & Spartanburg, SC, via Saluda, North Carolina October 2002. At this time the track has not been used for about one year, and only a portion of the line was used south of Asheville down to the Hendersonville area at that time.
Still bearing its "as god intended" number this SD60M could still hustle a pig train along the river a dozen years ago. The scene is a little different these days in ways beyond the motive power, with a power crossover here along with the obnoxious CAP X2020 high tower transmission line along the ROW. May 16, 2006.
Plenty of uniformity yet also a lot of small variations in age and weathering among this solid train of CSX covered hoppers. Lily pads clutter an impounded backwater near Lynxville, WI. Level running along the Mississippi River means smooth sailing headed west on the Aurora Sub. August 18, 2024.

There wasn't any intention to make an art impression but the camera did without demand (harsh winter light?). EMU-3 4019+4031 (type ICM) as train IC 1738 approaching the station Overvecht and heading towards the Central Station.
A recurring theme of all the places I revisited was how the trees have taken over. Near the top of Byron Hill this was a single track tree tunnel when I lived on this end of the state. When the double tracking happened the earthwork really opened up the view. Now the trees have come back with a vengeance. Even in July, you have to carefully line up the cab with the small patches of sun. I suppose winter would be good too, with low light on the curve from over the shoulder. July 20, 2024.
It's startling to see what congestion has done to the St. Croix Sub. It used to be a pretty fluid stretch of track, these days not so much. After scooping a loaded grain train with a tired DASH9 on the point we caught this oil train coming through Nelson. The rest of the day would be spent shooting the CP River and Waseca Subs. Returning home after dark dead trains were stacked like cordwood on the BNSF in every possible spot. Help is on the way in the form of CTC and crossover installations, we'll see next year how much of a difference it makes. March 21, 2015.
Slowly rolling into Global 3, this stacker has reached it's destination in Illinois. Illinois was our destination as well but we had some more hours of travel (and more snow) ahead of us. April 8, 2016.
Illinois Central 2508 hauls a train of bituminous coal. Originally intended to handle priority freight tonnage system-wide, the mountain-class locomotives were increasingly used in heavy coal service after the IC retracted steam power to its core coal region around Paducah on the Kentucky Division.
The 2508 is a model of the 4-8-2s rebuilt from USRA clone 2-10-2s by the Illinois Central's Paducah shops during 1937-1943. NAPM member Ted Richardson started with a Hallmark Models locomotive and made major corrections to a number of parts to match the IC prototype, including the pilot, smoke stack, sandbox, and cab windows. Other details were made by Ackert Industries from drawings Ted provided, making this model a very accurate representation of a 2500-class locomotive. Ted also painted the model. The freight cars are a mixture of Red Caboose and Life-Like models.

We took a trip to Chicago for spring break, to celebrate a birthday and to get away from the snow. Two nights were spent tantalizingly close a lot of rail activity. Unfortunately, as often happens on a family trip it was tough to get away for quality camera time. The morning I was going to get out early was a weather washout. We did take a short ride on the electric line down to Hyde Park for our visit to the Museum of Science and Industry. It was a fun way to avoid traffic and parking hassles. An outbound train pulls up to 55th St as we wait for our train to take us back to Millennium Park (Randolph Street Station). Although the results where thin photographically it was a great get-away and fun to check out this end of the old Illinois Central for the first time. March 12, 2019.
A favorite combination of mine is clean cascade green, snow and brilliant sunshine. This empty taconite train has all three as it rolls into Minneapolis at Park Jct. January 23, 1994.
Today was a very busy day in Rochelle and I got to see alot including a rare movement by the BNSF into a yard next to the UP.
I thought this long lost station was in the North East somewhere but the interweb states:-
Gresley railway station was at Castle Gresley, Derbyshire on the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line. The line was built for the Midland Railway and the station opened on 2 October 1848. It was closed on 7 September 1964.
The GTW heritage unit leads a sister SD70M-2 and 9000 feet of train on L508 as the train enters the doubletrack at East Durand. The train will shortly have to slow for the 10 mph Hi Wye to connect to the Holly Sub, which it will utilize to get to Detroit.

The ever reliable BR Standard 2 No. 78019 boiler ticket is due to expire soon. An overhaul awaits her but she goes out with a bang especially on the evidence of this photograph on her final gala appearance for a while. 78019 passing Kinchley lane with black clag being thrown out of her chimney. A fine achievement for her crew on such a warm day.

With the rail and ties laid on the new roadbed, piles of ballast now dot the right of way as work progresses on the addition of a second main to the Glidden Subdivision southwest of Houston. This 10 mile stretch would enter service in May 2016.
