Double Arch is a close pair of natural arches, one of the more well known features of Arches National Park in Utah. Arches National Park, 5 miles (8 km) north of Moab Utah borders the Colorado River in the southeast and is the site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches. Print Size 13x19 inches.
Double Arch, in Arches National Park, is what is known as a pothole arch, formed by water erosion from above rather than more typical erosion from the side. The larger opening has a span of 148 feet (45 m) and a height of 104 feet (32 m). These dimensions give the arch the tallest opening and second-longest span in the park. (Source: Wikipedia)
Unlike some other arches in the park, visitors are allowed to hike up to and directly under these arches. People can be seen here beneath the arches.

Double Arch is in the Windows section of Arches National Park. It is 112 feet tall with a 144 feet span. It is a pothole arch, meaning that water erosion from above resulted in its formation.
Double Arch is 112 feet tall and 144 feet wide. It is an impressive feature that is one of the most popular in Arches National Park. During daylight hours it usually has a crowd of people scrambling around the boulders. I cloned out several but left three in the center of the image for scale purposes.

A ten-minute exposure gazing up through Double Arch, where the night sky painted its trails across the frame. With the moon about 75% full, its soft glow lit the sandstone perfectly for star trail photography—a fun adventure shared with fellow landscape photographer Calvin Jennings.
Across the parking lot from the Windows Arches trail is Double Arch trail. With two arch features in the same location, this place gets pretty busy. It was hard to find a parking space here. That being said, this was one of the highlights of my trip. The hikes up to the arches are pretty easy and not too far from the parking area.
I will probably post another picture with a closer view from here, but I wanted the size of this arch to be seen. It is huge and the people look like ants below it. You can hike all the way to where you are walking below the arches. The sounds are really amplified when you get up close to them. If you ever get to Arches, make sure this stop is on your itinerary.
The dawn sun had just started to rise above the horizon and in the process bathed the "Double Arch" in an almost unreal glorious golden shade. If you look closely at the right hand arch you can just make out a figure which should give a good idea of the scale of these structures.

The drive through to The Parade Of Elephants Section of Arches National Park was sensational.
Not only do you pass the famous Balanced Rock, but you enter The Windows Section overlooking Cove of Caves and Double Arch.

Another image captured of this famous set of arches. One might even say that nature had put on its own gallery or display with the shadows cast and patterns in the sandstone. In the end, it was a balance of composing in filling up just enough with that of the blue skies along the upper edges and large boulders at the base.
A conversion to black & white using Capture NX2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.
The imposing double-arched Mill Bridge, another jewel of Zagori's stone architecture, stands proudly over the riverbed. Its name derives from the old mill that once existed nearby. A glimpse into the traditional craftsmanship that blends harmoniously with the natural landscape, under the Zagorian sky.
With my one and only time at Arches National Park, I wanted to make sure I came away with photos of the most iconic locations there. I'm happy I had a chance to get Double Arch, not only in the daytime, but also in the evening. I'll post the nighttime one in the near future.
And yes, when I say daydreams, its because almost every day I dream about getting back to the vast expanse of the Colorado Plateau and the parks and open lands therein.
I'm just in awe of nature's creation! Imagine how many years it took to carve this huge hole. It will probably take a few hundred million years more to complete the hole on the right side, my guess 😁.
Have a great day my friends!

We had set up early and waited for over an hour, wanting to capture the double arch when the sunlight to hit it just right. We were there with another photographer from another country. He got there long before we did. When the time was just about right, this man went and stood in the photo and refused to move. There was some entertaining conversation between some other people who were there and the photobomber. I took the photo anyway and didn't edit him out. This is a common thing at National Parks. Photographers don't have the "right of way" and the land is free to roam. It was kind of sad that he wasn't as willing to give as I was, but it wasn't the end of the world.

I guess any night sky photographer who goes to Arches National Park wants to do Double Arch and I missed it last year on my trip (too many people), so this year it was high on the list. Canon Fisheye 15mm F2.8 on a full-framer.
And so I continue to see
Through these windows
Place after place
Without you
Dreaming that one day
Through these windows
I shall reach, star after star
With you.
