'glico crowd in dotonbori'. in this shot I wanted to capture the many people who consistantly come to this area to take photos of the famous Glico sign in the neon lit area of Dotonbori in Osaka.
this image is comprised of 3 bracketed exposures that I had to shoot very quickly as my aim was to try to keep everyone as still as possible while still having a bit of movement in the crowd. Taken with 5d3 & TS-E 17mm on tripod.
Japan is a land of many paradoxes. Dontonburi canal is a pleasant waterway that runs through central Osaka. Although the district is brimming with restaurants, almost all activity is based on streets that do not face the main canal. This canal would have many restaurants along the waterway if it was located in my home country of Australia, so I was quite perplexed by the drab, grey atmosphere along the waterfront here. No one can have a nice dinner or drinks while enjoying the canal in Osaka. The canal is almost like a back laneway with its old air conditioning units and fire stairwells, while all the activity is in other streets that do not face the canal.

The vast and dense city of Osaka, as seen from the Swissotel in Namba (wasn't going to bother with a tent for this music festival).
Backstreets of Dotonburi area in Osaka late on Saturday evening. Small laneways are filled with small restaurants and bars.
The back alleys of Dotonbori in Osaka offer a glimpse into the city's vibrant and bustling street life. These narrow lanes are packed with an eclectic mix of tiny eateries, bars, and shops, each offering its own unique charm and culinary delights. Visitors can wander through the maze-like alleys, soaking in the lively atmosphere and discovering hidden gems tucked away from the main thoroughfares.

Went to Osaka for a day trip, knee pain getting worst so I only had energy to go around 2 place.
Osaka Castle and Dotonburi.
There was a cheerleading sort of event happening over the Osaka Castle grounds and spent a bit of time watching them.
They are a joy to watch and even though I don't understand what they are saying their smile is infectious.

Although Tokyo is bigger and more familiar to foreigners who visit Japan, Osaka is known as a food mecca for domestic Japanese tourists. Our first evening in Japan was a complicated affair in terms of choosing a restaurant, as there were literally dozens of crowded blocks of restaurants throughout the neighbourhood. We finally settled on this restaurant which had a small line of people queueing outside. Restaurants in this district are typically very small establishments, with high turnover and an enjoyable atmosphere.

Dotonburi in Osaka, Japan, seems to be busy all day, particularly during the night. Good food and restaurants are available around this area.
Here is the spot that people must come when visiting Osaka, Japan. Glico Man billboard in Dotonburi is what I am talking about.

Me and my mom on the Dotonburi bridge in Shin Sai Bashi, Osaka, after a yummy sushi meal and some pet shops ;)

This temple is located in an extremely busy restaurant district of Osaka known as Dotonburi. Restaurant patrons regularly pass through temple on their way to other places. The temple is a quiet haven in the middle of some of Osaka's busiest and noisiest streets. A temple has always been located in this area, but the current structure was built after WWII, following severe bombing raids on Osaka.

I had requested these two lovelies to take my picture against the Glico running man sign in the Dotonburi district in Osaka. I am on the Ebisubashi bridge, a popular meeting spot in Dotonbori. The girls- probably Korean or Chinese tourists- were busy in taking their own selfies before they took my phone so in the meantime I decided to take a picture of them instead. Ebisubashi is just under the Glico Man billboard which you will see immediately after this. (see next picture). Originally constructed to provide access to the nearby Ebisu Shrine, the bridge is the location of a legendary curse on Osaka's baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers. More practically, the bridge provides a link between the Shinsaibashi-suji and Ebisubashi-suji shopping districts.
Due to the familiarity of the Glico Man, Ebisubashi makes for a convenient gathering point, hence its nicknames, nanpa-bashi, mostly used by foreigners, and hikkake-bashi (the pulling bridge), mostly used by native Japanese. The bridge runs above the Dotonbori Canal, which you will see in a moment. (see subsequent pictures later in this album). Detailed notes about Osaka's Namba- Dotonbori district appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Osaka, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)
