Acres of insect and disease polygons on paper aerial survey maps were hand-calculated using either a planimeter or a dot-grid printed on transparent acetate. This process was replaced with a Geographic Information System (GIS) in Region 6 in 1988.

Close up of the dot grid. It is very difficult to take photos of a subtle dot pattern on white paper.
Took to paper first to plan and test out some ideas for the next icon in my set, Prague Castle.
Mainly tested out how the handlettering idea would look within the idea I had for having a ribbon at the bottom of the icon. I also had a few ideas regarding the brick texture of the castle including missing out some of the pattern to give the appearance of worn away bricks.
All just a few quick rough sketches to get me feeling inspired and ready to dive into Illustrator :)
