Mount Taranaki, or Mount Egmont, is the centre of attention of the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is a dormant stratovolcano and one of the most symmetrical volcanic cones in the world. It is located in a national park with intensively-farmed dairy pasture reaching right up to the mostly-circular park boundary.
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi which last erupted 4000 years ago. At 13,796 ft (4,205 m) above sea level and over 33,000 ft (10,058 m) from the bottom of the ocean floor, Mauna Kea is the tallest sea mountain in the world. Its summit is home to the world’s largest observatory for optical, infrared and submillimeter astronomy. Research teams from eleven different countries operate 13 telescopes on the summit.
In Hawaiian mythology, Mauna Kea is home to the snow goddess Poli‘ahu. In ancient times, the summit was considered the realm of the gods and was kapu (forbidden) to all except the highest chiefs and priests.

Towering over the island of Maui and visible from just about any point, Haleakala Crater is a force of nature in every sense. At 10,023 feet above sea level, this dormant volcano is the stage for a breathtaking range of landscapes.
Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and "Shira", is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) from its base, and 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. The mountain is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major climbing destination. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant and could erupt again. Uhuru Peak is the highest summit on Kibo's crater rim.
Both Mawenzi and Kibo began erupting about 1 million years ago. They are separated by the "Saddle Plateau" at 4,400 metres.
Kibo is the largest cone and is more than 15 miles (24 km) wide at the "Saddle Plateau" altitude. The last activity here has been dated to between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago and created the current Kibo summit crater. Kibo still has gas-emitting fumaroles in the crater. Kibo is capped by an almost symmetrical cone with escarpments rising 180 metres (590 ft) to 200 metres (660 ft) on the south side. These escarpments define a 2.5-kilometre-wide (1.6 mi) caldera caused by the collapse of the summit. Within this caldera is the Inner Cone and within the crater of the Inner Cone is the Reusch Crater, which the Tanganyika government in 1954 named after Gustav Otto Richard Reusch upon his climbing the mountain for the 25th time (out of 65 attempts during his lifetime). The Ash Pit, 350 metres (1,150 ft) deep, lies within the Reusch Crater. About 100,000 years ago, part of Kibo's crater rim collapsed, creating the area known as the Western Breach and the Great Barranco.

Callejón Cañapa is a highly eroded dormant volcano, on the edge of the Atacama Desert in southwestern Bolivia. Cañapa has a long convoluted summit ridge with an elevation of 5895 metres. It is indicative of shifting in the volcanic center over time. This process left multiple caldera sites. This area of the Cordillera Occidental is packed full of old volcanoes clustered closely together. The mountain forms an enormous backdrop to the colorful lakes Cañapa and Hedionda. Telelens.

During an unusually mild November day on my NC property, intuition led me to a specific place by the water. I discovered a dozen newts swimming about (emerged from dormancy beneath leaves at the bottom.)
Warm, sunny winter days are an idyllic time for newts. All snakes and frogs are in deep hibernation and they can frolic in the water without fear.

I realise there's something incredibly honest about trees in winter, how they're experts at letting things go.

We seem to be in our second winter - it's sunny but below freezing at night again....and all the buds were coming out!

Nemrut is a dormant volcano in Eastern Turkey, close to Lake Van. The volcano is named after King Nimrod who is said to have ruled this area in about 2100 BC. The most powerful eruptions of Nemrut occurred in the Pleistocene. Many small eruptions occurred during the Holocene, the last one in 1692. The top of the volcano is a large caldera that hosts three crater lakes.

I took this photo in 2002 at an elevation of 2258 meters with my Nikon FE10 SLR film camera.
In December 2013, I visited the Dormant Volcano Haleakala on Maui, HI. I didn't have a lens that would capture the entirety of the caldera. Lately, I took up the project of stitching together several shots which I hope capture the wonder of this amazing place.
Haleakalā (/ˌhɑːliˌɑːkəˈlɑː/; Hawaiian: [ˈhɐlɛˈjɐkəˈlaː]), or the East Maui Volcano, is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the West Maui Mountains.
The tallest peak of Haleakalā ("house of the sun"), at 10,023 feet (3,055 m), is Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 11.25 km (7 mi) across, 3.2 km (2 mi) wide, and nearly 800 m (2,600 ft) deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones. (information courtesy of Wikipedia)

"Ho letto millanta storie di cavalieri erranti,
di imprese e di vittorie dei giusti sui prepotenti
per starmene ancora chiuso coi miei libri in questa stanza
come un vigliacco ozioso, sordo ad ogni sofferenza.
Nel mondo oggi più di ieri domina l'ingiustizia,
ma di eroici cavalieri non abbiamo più notizia;

"I have read a thousand stories of wandering knights,
of businesses and victories of the righteous over the bullies to stay still closed with my books in this room
like an idle coward, deaf to all suffering.
In the world today more than yesterday injustice dominates,but we have no news of heroic knights;
for this reason, Sancho, there is a need above all
of a generous impetus, were it also a crazy dream:
go get me the saddle, that my daring commitment
I promised it to my beauty, Dulcinea del Toboso,
and I promise you Sancho that you will earn a castle,
but I don't accept a refusal, come on saddle the horse!
You will be my squire, my comforting shadow
and with this pure heart, with my shield and Ronzinante,
with my spear I will strike injustice day and night,
how true is it in the Mancha my name is Don Chisciotte..."

This is my Christmas cactus. It's supposed to be dormant at this time of year, but for some strange reason they are still blooming. One at a time. Not in masses. There's another bud on its way. Very strange !!
Tulips (Tulipa) form a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes (having bulbs as storage organs). Tulipa is a genus of the lily family, Liliaceae The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly colored, generally red, pink, yellow, or white (usually in warm colors). They often have a different colored blotch at the base of the tepals (petals and sepals, collectively), internally. Tulips originally were found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, but since the seventeenth century have become widely naturalised and cultivated. Flowering in the spring, they become dormant in the summer once the flowers and leaves die back, emerging above ground as a shoot from the underground bulb in early spring. The tulip's flowers are usually large and are actinomorphic (radially symmetric) and hermaphrodite (contain both male (androecium) and female (gynoecium) characteristics), generally erect, or more rarely pendulous, and are arranged more usually as a single terminal flower, or when pluriflor as two to three (e.g. Tulipa turkestanica), but up to four, flowers on the end of a floriferous stem (scape), which is single arising from amongst the basal leaf rosette. 11647

A dormant terminal bud from an Ashe's magnolia (Magnolia ashei) tree
When I saw this tree, it looked quite odd with no leaves, flowers, and these very unique branches with whitish tips. But when I looked more closely at the white tips, which I later discovered were dormant terminal buds, I thought they were incredibly beautiful. The light was hitting the tree in the way that created the beautiful circular bokeh. To me, it looks like the branch is meditating.
