This is a standard high arched lamp letter box, copying the earlier design introduced in Victoria's reign. Note the use of LETTERS ONLY and that there is no doorpull. Such boxes, originally designed for securing to lamp-posts, were often used in walls.

The next day the stem had dried on and was really strong. I applied pressure, and it didn't feel like it would break again. Still, I just wanted to go get another one from Rockler. They were a bit pricey at $10+ per knob, but I don't like the idea that it has a pre-weakened location on the part you have to grab and pull with your hand.
Here is a good example of the number one (large) 1861 design box with a doorpull. The makers's details are not possible to read under the many layers of paint. Note how the box has been set into the battered wall, the vertical face leaving a deep sloping shelf at the bottom.

This George VI lamp letter box, introduced in 1935, literally, is a little different, it's painted green! Presumably, as it's not in public use, but being used as a private letter box, the colour reflects the owner's choice. This design incorporated a doorpull for the first time and was carried on into the following reign.
The location suggests, along with others, that preferential treatment was given to large estate owners in Victorian times and later, in providing a convenient collection point for their post! This is the standard design from 1881 incorporating a doorpull for the first time.
