This evil thing has evaporated milk, buttloads of butter, chocolate chips, and caramel. Thus the "Doom".
St. Leonard's Stowell has a wonderful, early C13 Doom and stands next to Stowell Park, high on a hilltop in the heart of the Cotswolds. A small Norman cruciform church which once had a central tower. The south door is c. 1150 and has a number of crosses incised in its jambs and several mass dials. The west wall has a buttress with a grotesque head near its top and a Norman window. Pointed Transitional crossing arches displaced by the weight of the original tower and chancel with a C13 piscina with later trefoil head. An Easter sepulchre on the north wall and an early C14 east window. The south transept has a C13 trefoil-headed piscina, C13 lancet and an early C14 south window. A Saxon sundial stands on the windowsill. C. Hodgson Fowler restored the church 1898-9. Plain early C13 font, Pulpit by Hodgson Fowler. The Doom of c. 1200-20 is on the north wall of the nave. The upper tier with Christ and the angels is lost, but two tiers remain: the Virgin interceding, hands raised in supplication, flanked by Apostles with the sifting of the souls beneath. Below are two knights engaged in judicial combat. Of the same date are two fragmentary martyrdom scenes in the south transept. East window by Clayton and Bell.
