Sorry I'm not around much lately. I'm helping with a family member's illness and will only be online occasionally until mid-month. Miss you all!

* #DoodlewashDecember2021: Snow. Cause this guy’s got a snowy beard!

Did you know that when a group of De Brazza’s Monkeys feels threatened, they all freeze except for the alpha male, who will begin shaking branches in order to draw attention away from the others?

I used ZenArt’s Fineline brush set for this painting, in order to get that detailed grizzled look of the fur.

#DoodlewashDecember2021: A bit late to the prompt!

Did you know that caribou (aka reindeer) are the only deer species in which both male and female have antlers?

Another test of the Paul Rubens’ precipatated colors. This small postcard size doesn't give the colors a chance to really granulate. The colors are a bit dark, and it's harder to get the contrast needed for drama. I think I know what to do now, though, when working at this smaller size.

#DoodlewashDecember2021: Star.

Push come to shove, an abstract painting is whatever the viewer wants it to be. A gothic setting, an alien invasion, a hot mess - however it speaks to you.

This wasn't really meant to be a painting at all.

I'd just taken the Paul Ruben's Precipitated Colors set out of the box, and made some sweeping strokes across the page to see what the colors were, how they moved, dried and granulated. Then I set the paper aside. But, I kept picking it up over a period of days, and I liked the drama I was seeing. It reminded me of those old gothic novels I used to read. I swore I could see rocky cliffs, a dark night, eerie lights, and a woman in white flitting about in the distance.

Finally, I grabbed a white gel pen, added some stars, a bit (just a bit) more detail to woman (the teeny tiny woman) and a bit (just a bit) more detail to the foreground. It all looks like a gothic drama to me. What do you see?

#DoodlewashDecember2021: Icicle

Did you know that the Echeveria Icycle (aka Echeveria Icicle) plant is named forr it’s frosty looking leaves.

I didn’t quite get that frosty look, but I liked what was happening and decided to let it go. You gotta love artistic license!

#DoodlewashDecember2021: Tree. Just a quick little painting to try out a new set of Paul Ruben's Precipatated Colors. I believe precipatated means granulating. The colors are a bit dark, but I can see myself having some fun with them.

#DoodlewashDecember2021: Polar Bear. Very late to the prompt!

Did you know that polar bears can swim for days without rest? Thirty mile swims are common, and they have been tracked swimming as far as 220 miles. Even cubs have been tracked swimming as far 96 miles without harm. What isn't known is whether the bears can make up for the energy loss expended during these long swims, and that may be key to their survival.

#DoodlewashDecember2021: Angel. 'Cause if I had a dog like this I'd name her Angel.

Did you know that the Swiss Shepherd shares the same origins as the German Shepherd, but only comes in white or cream, has a mellower personality and is more upright in stature.

switched from cold press to hot press. Less granulation, but easier to get that dark/light contrast. The limited palette of colors will keep me from using this set for my postcard paintings too often, but I'll definitely be using it.

For all who celebrate, Merry Christmas! The rest of you have a wonderful day, too, just because everyone should have a wonderful day.

#DoodlewashDecember2021: Fireplace. 'Cause when the weather is like it is in this painting, I want to be sitting in front of the fireplace!

Egret in the Mists. Another quick painting using Paul Ruben's Precipatated Colors set.

I've come to the conclusion that paintings done with this set need to be quick. Oh, you can think them out - I had a decent idea in mind, and used masking fluid to save the shape of the egret. And I added a second layer of color, to increase the dark/light contrast. But these are colors that could easily become chalky and dull. It's best just let them do their thang!

They're very earthy, but very dramatic colors. A few strokes, and some contrast of dark and light, and you have the makings of a visual story.

#DoodlewashDecember2021: Arctic Fox.

Did you know that during the winter months, the Arctic Fox is considered to have the warmest coat of any animal in the world?

This painting was a challenge because I was with someone who kept pushing my arm as I painted and who managed to splash a large amount of water onto the painting halfway through.

I almost decided to just toss it, but there is a feel to this I like, so I kept on, and I'm not unhappy with the result. I'm not exactly happy, either, but it keeps me looking at it. Any painting that keeps you looking is worth keeping!

Celebration is the prompt today from #doodlewashDecember2021 so, since it’s New Year’s Eve, I created some simple, hopeful goals in bookmark format to plan for celebrations for the next year, in anticipation of a better year together.

Just print out 8.5×11 in and cut out. Or turn them over, color, and make up your own simple and hopeful ways to make the new year better. Enjoy.
