the article reads:

Four years ago, Serena Boggs lost her mom while she waited for a new heart.

Now she has photos hanging in Triangle businesses to spread awareness about the importance of becoming an organ donor.

Boggs’ mother was only 49 when she died, and she was an organ donor before she passed away. But because she had heart failure and was on dialysis, several of her organs couldn’t be recycled.

But a few months after she died, Boggs got a letter from a grandmother who wrote to let her know the corneas she received from her mother helped her to paint again, drive again and see her grandchildren.

“It was a healing story,” Boggs said. “When you lose someone but they continue to help people, it’s awe-inspiring.”

Her mother’s skin was used to help a burn victim, and some of her bones were used for another patient.

Boggs said she and her family fought hard to get her mother a new heart, but the waiting list was too long.

“She declined really fast in the end and didn’t make it,” she said. “I needed a grief period, but then I realized I needed to do something about this.”

So Boggs called Carolina Donor Services to offer her photography services to spread awareness about becoming a donor.

“I’ve been an advocate for donating ever since,” she said.

Boggs met with the Carolina Donor coordinator, and through the organization was able to set up a photo shoot of donors, recipients and families in Durham, Winston-Salem and Greenville.

One of the women Boggs photographed was a mother whose 13-year-old daughter was murdered.

Weeks before her death the daughter told her mom she wanted to be a donor.

“Through her loss came grace for other families,” Boggs said.

Another interesting experience for Boggs during the photo shoot was photographing a woman whose mom had received an organ transplant and whose husband’s liver, when he was killed in a traffic accident, saved a father in the same town.

“There were all these great connections,” Boggs said.

Another story that touched Boggs was that of a family whose little girl died when she was three from a rare disease that required many organ transplants early on in her life.

When she died, her organs were used to save another child.

“There’s just not enough photos or education out there,” Boggs said. “The problem is people aren’t educated enough about organ donations. They’re warned that they’re not treated fairly if they’re injured because their organs are needed, and that’s just not true.”

“I understand how difficult it is because your loved one is dead and ultimately it’s up to the family what’s done with the body and organs, and you don’t want anyone to mess with them. But it’s all a medical procedure. It’s just about raising awareness.”

“I want to bring faces, stories and emotions to organ donation,” Boggs said.

Boggs said so far she’s received great feedback from her photography series.

Seven months after starting the project, her photos can be seen on the Carolina Donor Services web site, and they are on display at the Borders book store on the corner of Strickland and Six Forks roads in Raleigh for the month of June.

Garden Salon in Durham is also displaying one of her photos.

Boggs isn’t sure where her photos will be displayed after July, but she’s thinking about donating them to the Duke Transplant Center, where her mother was treated.

Boggs said her photos tell a story because of the way she captures her subjects.

“The camera for me is emotion,” she said. “I just see everything; it’s just the way I view things. I capture as I see, and I think that’s where the emotion comes from.”

Boggs said though photography is her passion, she’s enjoyed working with Carolina Donor Services to raise awareness.

“I want to help more companies raise awareness when the girls get a little older, and eventually I’d like to raise awareness in other countries on different issues,” Boggs said.

Boggs has three daughters, 9, 7 and 3. They attend *** Elementary where one of the teachers recently received a kidney transplant.

It’s been four years since her mother’s death, and Boggs said it’s been hard, that she was an amazing woman who is greatly missed.

“But we’ve put this journey to move forward in her name,” she said. “What’s important to me is the stories and education. We were given a journey, and we want to save other lives.
