The common bottlenose dolphin or Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a wide-ranging marine mammal of the family Delphinidae. The common bottlenose dolphin is a very familiar dolphin due to the wide exposure it gets in captivity in marine parks and dolphinariums, and in movies and television programs. It is the largest species of the beaked dolphins. It inhabits temperate and tropical oceans throughout the world, and is absent only from polar waters. While formerly known simply as the bottlenose dolphin, this term is now applied to the genus Tursiops as a whole. As considerable genetic variation has been described within this species, even between neighboring populations, many experts think additional species may be recognized.

Common bottlenose dolphins are grey, and between 2 and 4 m (6.6 and 13.1 ft) long, and weigh between 150 and 650 kg (330 and 1,430 lb). Males are generally larger and heavier than females. In most parts of the world, adult length is between 2.5 and 3.5 m (8.2 and 11.5 ft); weight ranges between 200 and 500 kg (440 and 1,100 lb). Dolphins have a short and well-defined snout that looks like an old-fashioned gin bottle, which is the source for their common name.

The site of Morecambe's former Leisure Park and Bubbles is set to be transformed into the much-anticipated Eden Project.

Once incredibly popular with holidaymakers from all over the north west, this area of Morecambe Promenade has a rich history.

Opened in 1936 - a time when Britain experienced a golden age of open-air swimming pools - Morecambe's Super Swimming Stadium was built to rival to Blackpool's grand South Shore Swimming Coliseum. The stadium boasted a championship swimming course, water polo area, diving stage, grandstands, promenade, sun terrace and even an artificial beach.

This impressive pool was the longest in Europe and once saw 27,000 bathers in just two days. It was one of the town's main attractions, hosting prestigious swimming and aquatic events throughout the year, including the Miss Great Britain beauty contest.

Unfortunately, the stadium closed its doors in 1975 due to structural defects and was demolished a year later. Part of the structure was used as a Dolphinarium before the entire site was cleared for a leisure park.

Morecambe Leisure Park opened in the summer of 1979, with its main attraction being the heated open-air leisure pool known as Blue Lagoon. The pool was particularly popular for its wave-making machine, and also featured a separate cascade pool and sun-trap terrace.

The Leisure Park in Morecambe, which opened in the holiday town's late 20th century peak, was situated near Marineland, Europe's first Oceanarium, and Morecambe Pleasure Park, home to the largest Ferris wheel in Europe.

Around the same time, the Superdome, a vast live music and entertainment venue, opened next to the leisure park. In its early years, it hosted heats for the Miss Great Britain contest and was the destination for Radio One Roadshow music events.

In the late 1980s, Morecambe Leisure Park expanded with the addition of an indoor pool and was renamed Bubbles. It attracted a new generation of fans with its water slides and cannons.

Following the closure of the Central Pier due to structural concerns, the Superdome became the new venue for the Morecambe Music Festival. In its later years, the Dome (as it had been renamed) hosted big music acts including Blur and the Arctic Monkeys.

However, as Morecambe struggled to attract crowds towards the end of the 20th century, the complex faced financial difficulties. Bubbles closed at the turn of the new century and was demolished in 2001. The Dome survived a few more years, closing in 2008 before being demolished.

Every 23 July, the world celebrates the World Whale and Dolphin Day. Declared in 1986 by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), it put an end to the 200 years of the indiscriminate killing of whales. The whaling ban is still in place, and it means that whale meat sales are not allowed. However, whaling is not the only threat to these animals. It is the catching of whales, dolphins, and other marine species for dolphinariums, oceanariums and circuses that presents the most danger to their existence.

Spain, Valencia, the “Dolphinarium” of “L'Oceanogràfic” at CAC, “Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias”, with a total of five pools, is the largest of its kind in Europe.

During my stay on the Caribbean island of Curaçao in the early 70th, I used to swim hours & play every day for almost one year with a dolphin "Bini" near the beach in 10 to about 15 mtr water depth open sea in the Piscadera Bay.

📌...I still believe, holding this sensitive, highly intelligent & playful dolphins, like others marine mammals in dolphinariums in sterile blue pools, without the at least a modelled natural biosphere of the sea, is like holding a big dog in a tiny one room apartment & never get him out, …on the other hand, the studies done in some dolphinariums are also very important.

📌...However, since dolphins of today's dolphinariums were born in captivity, they never knew & experienced their natural environment, neither living in large dolphin schools witch sizes varies from small groups & up to 800 or more aquatic mammals.

Taken during the recent 'London 24in24' event, albeit whilst I went off-piste in the afternoon for a few hours. Despite being mid-Summers day the sky was overcast and grey so I opted for a moody monochrome treatment for this shot of the David Wynne 'Girl and a dolphin' sculpture adjacent to Tower Bridge.

Unfortunately for the first time ever I had to leave just over twelve hours into the 24hr event but a big thanks to Will Cheung (and Annie) for organising it and fingers crossed we'll get to do it all again next Summer.

For those anywhere near London, you can find details of the next London Flickr Group Photowalk on Saturday July 20th here : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577219...

From artsy.net, "Three years later, a larger version was installed in London on the north bank of the Thames near Tower Bridge and became one of the capital's most recognized and best-loved sculptures along with Wynne's Boy with a Dolphin (1975), which is to be found beside the Albert Bridge in Chelsea. David Wynne was a self-taught sculptor who initially studied zoology at Cambridge. As author David Elliott noted in his book, 'Boy with a Dolphin : The Life and Work of David Wynne', "His love of drawing animals and birds was all-consuming. He remembers constantly observing what he saw around him, seized with a growing conviction that his future life's work would somehow be involved with the natural world" . The artist was meticulous with his practice, always working from life to study the people, animals and birds he portrayed. To capture the experience of swimming with a dolphin he spent hours under water watching and interacting with the animals in both California, and the Dolphinarium in London."

Spain, Valencia, “L'Oceanogràfic“, in front on the left the spherical 26 mtr high volière which presents a reproduction of a wetland, devoted to South American mangroves, occupied by yellow-headed turtles & sunfishes for the aquatic part & by pink spoonbills, red ibis, striated herons, ypecaha / giant wood rail & redheads.

The special feature is, that visitors can move freely via walkways that run along the edge inside of the volière. A descending ramp which allows to observe birds from the treetops & at the ground level a large aquarium in which mangrove trees grow. In front of the mangroves, 2 other aquariums re- present the ponds on the shores of the Mediterranean.

www.anarcopedia.org/index.php?title=Barry_Horne&mobil...

www.veganzetta.org/breve-storia-di-barry-horne/

One of Barry Horne's first militant actions was his attempt to free Rocky.

"In 1988 he entered the history of world animal rights by organizing the attempt to free Rocky: a dolphin who had been languishing in a small swimming pool in Lancashire for more than 20 years.

The plan is technically well thought out but the mission is very complex. Moving a dolphin that weighs 200 kg and taking it to the sea is not easy. The activists also demonstrate that they are not well aware of the difficulties of reintroducing a dolphin into the wild. It's the 1980s and ethological information on these animals doesn't circulate like it does today.

Although Horne and his men spent many nights inside the facility to make friends with Rocky, when it was time to carry out the liberation, they realized that it couldn't be done. After several attempts, they leave the tub.

They are stopped by the police shortly afterwards. The material for liberation is found inside the machine. They will be sentenced to 6 months and a £500 fine.

Some time later Horne and the others resumed their mission to try to free Rocky and in 1989 they launched the Morecambe Dolphinarium Campaign. They picket the dolphinarium, distribute leaflets to tourists, organize rallies. They put pressure on local authorities.

In 1991, Rocky was finally transferred and freed.

History tells us that he was last seen joining a group of other Dolphins."
