This is a typical piece from a 1950s - 60s coffee shop lamp fixture. Its an all wood rhombicosadodecahedron, which has 12 pentagons, 20 triangles, 30 squares, 60 vertices, and 120 pieces of wood. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhombicosidodecahedron
This one is 9" tall, but I also make them in 12". They are ideal for math classrooms, 1950s decor, or just anyone interested in geometry sculptures as an art form.

A LA DIVINA PROPORCIÓN
A ti, maravillosa disciplina,
dodecaedro azul, arco sonoro.
Luces por alas un compás ardiente.
Tu canto es una esfera transparente.
A ti, divina proporción de oro.

12 woven Pentagons, 20 triangles, 30 diamonds, 60 sticks, 12" diameter. The wood is 1/4" x 3/4" x 5" and each piece has 2 compound (X,Y & Z axis) angled notches cut halfway thru (one from below & one above) so they snug together. Mostly press fit with minimal glue joints. I like to clear coat with semi gloss so the grain shows real nice.
1950s Googie restaraunts & coffee shops had alot of these as light fixtures. They were all the rage with geometrics, molecules, & boomerangs. These wood sculptures could easily be incorporated into a light fixture with a white glass globe inside.

Astronomy, Science & Physics teachers just as well as Geometry teachers like to use these classroom wood study & lecture models. A friend asked me to make these for his Physics class. We looked all over the internet and couldn't find any big like this, so I went ahead and made several batches of each shape. These forms were studied by Kepler in the late 1500s when he theorized that all of the then known planets orbited the sun in relation to each of these 5 geometric shapes.

A popular geometric shape used in the 1950s -60s as a hanging light fixture or table sculpture.
This is an all wood Truncated Dodecahedron. It has 12 regular decagonal faces, 20 regular triangular faces, 60 vertices and 90 pieces of wood, each compound mitered to the center point. I make these in 9" or 12" tall, stained in light (shown) dark, cherrywood, or ebony.

This time the 12 woven wood Pentagons are not on the same surface as the center (smaller) Pentagons that define the plane even though they parallel them. The wood is 1/4" x 3/4" by 6" and the ball is 11" diameter. At a glance these seem like the same Dodecahedron over and over, but each has unique variations.
These are also ideal as 1950's Mid Century decor pieces. Geometric light fixtures were common in living rooms & coffee shops back in the day.
1950s "Mid Century Modern" all wood Dodecahedron sculpture. 12 faces, 12 pentagons, 20 regular triangles woven together, 60 identical pieces of wood. The wood is 1/4" x 3/4" by 6" and the ball is 9" diameter.
These can be tricky to photograph and look 3D and not seem flat. I used a bounceboard as filler opposing the natural sunlight, and take 2-3 photos of each piece and turning it slightly. I never know until the film comes back which was the better angle
No computer drawing or laser cutting, this is all "old school" table saw miters. Its sealed with clear semi gloss polyurethane to show that the beautiful wood grain has no fillers at any of the glue joints.
This is a really cool 1950s wood sculpture I made by joining 2 wood frame cubes with angles that connect the inner with the outer corners respectavely. Its a nice table top decor piece (clear coated here for photo clarity, but I also wood stain then clear coat them).
Technically, its a Tesseract, or an 8 cell hypercube en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesseract
These are great as stand alone "Mid Century Modern" table top pieces or Googie lamp fixtures. Geometrics were really big back in the "Atomic Age!"
The best way to photograph a 3D object and not look so flat in the photo for me has been using a low direct light source and a bounce board for light fill. When I tried this one on an overcast day and it just looked like a flat pendant in the photo.
This dodecahedron is made of wood strips I ripped from shelving boards then sanded. The nodes are 3 axis coumpound saw miters so each of the 30 pieces have to be identical for it to go together well.
"The Partial Platonics" ...a series of 5 polyhedra sculptures I did.
I used the original tablesaw jigs and fixtures that made one of the normal 9" Tetrahedrons (right). I cut identical compound miters on 4 pieces of wood then made the partial tetrahedron sculpture on the left. I tried to orient them as best as I could for the photo so you can see the 1-1 relationship they have. The compound angles are very precise so it holds its shape on its own.
Any which way you turn this piece it always looks the same!
All wood Dodecahedron, with 20 triangles woven together, 60 pieces total. Most joints are press fit with very few actual glue joints. Clean sharp edges and miters. Very nice on a bookshelf or a centerpiece in a conference room, ideal for engineering firms, tech schools. 7" dia.

12 Pentagons, 20 Triangles, 60 pieces of wood. All joints cut 3 way X Y & Z axis for a tight clean glue joint.
All wood construction / Aprox 9" diameter
This was so popular in the 1950s as a hanging light in a Googie coffeeshop although I make mine out of wood rather than orange plastic!
This is an icosadodecahedron, which is 12 pentagons and 20 triangles. I am really particular that each compound miter is really really clean and tight, so you can see the 6 interwoven 10-sided decagon 'equator rings' all the way around without any zig-zag in them! (I learned thats what happens when they're even slightly off angle). There are 60 identical pieces of wood each with 2 miters on each end. The pentagon side is a different miter angle than the triangle side

I like to combine 2 polyhedron when I can, to show how the relationships between the vertices and edges work between them both. This time I made an Octahedron with a Cuboctahedron inside of it. Each of the 12 vertices of the inner piece relates directly to each of the mid-points of every edge of the outer piece. I chose to pre stain the Octahedron a rich dark cherry wood stain before the final assembly, then everything is clear coated in polyurethane.
2 polyhedron in one! ...and 2 Platonic Solids in one!
This is a 'dual' of both a dodecahedron (stained dark) and an icosahedron (clear coated). They are duals mathematically, because they relate to each other 'one to one' in the number of edges (30 each), and they relate as compliments to the number of planes to number of vertices (20 & 12).
This is one of the more difficult pieces to make, because each has 2 different lengths. In fact their exact relation to each other is the 'golden ratio' which is really big all throughout nature. Each of the wood pieces is cut just halfway thru so they snug fit like Lincoln Logs. The 3 way compound miters on the dodecahedron are different than the 5 way compound miters on the icosahedron.
Did you take notes?...There will be a quiz on Friday!
This one was a light coat of thinned Ebony then a thinned light Fruitwood stain, then a clear sealant. This really punches the grain well.
12 flat faces, 20 woven triangles, 60 pieces of wood. 7" dia. Each of the 20 triangles surround one "implied" node of the dodecahedron. If each triangle was just big enough for the tips to touch (and be a true node), there would also be 5 perfect cubes woven together (1 cube = 12 sticks x 5= 60). You can see all the right angles that almost make cubes. This photo used a white bounceboard for light fill.
8 pointed Star Tetrahedron (Merkaba) all wood sculpture. One of the Archimedes Solids and one of the basics of sacred geometry. I clear coated this one for the photo to show the cross shadows easier, because these are very difficult to see in a two dimensional photograph.
2 Tetrahedron interwoven plus all of the inner struts that also form an octahedron. 24 pieces total (excluding stand).
This is a pretty simple all wood frame pyramid I made. Just 4 base pieces and 4 angled edges, each compound mitered so there are no gaps where the pieces come together.
Everybody like pyramids!
12 woven Pentagons, 12 Faces, 12 Stars, 60 sticks, this time with the wood standing on edge. Each stick has identical notches & compound miters. The wood is 1/8" x 3/4" x 4" (I rip the strips from standard 1" stock and work around the knots). The notches go halfway thru each stick, one from below and one above for a friction fit as they weave together. in this way there are very few actual glue joints.
I made thid version using Heinz Strobl's Knotology method with 10 strips of paper. Each face had four strips crossing over it, and rather than right triangle each face is an isosceles triangle of 45 degrees.
7" dia.
