Description: Okwui Enwezor, Artistic Director of Documenta 11, commented in his preface that almost fifty years after its founding, Documenta found itself confronted once again with the specters of yet another turbulent time of unceasing cultural, social, and political frictions. In order to meet the challenge of making a meaningful articulation of the possibilities of contemporary art in such a climate, Documenta 11 was presented in a series of five Platforms of public discussions, conferences, workshops, books, and film and video programs. 'In a sense, then, Documenta 11's five Platforms, in a paradoxical but necessary critical move, begin with a series of deterritorializations which not only intervene in the very historical location of Documenta in Kassel but also emblematize the mechanisms that make the space of contemporary art one of multiple ruptures. The catalogue includes preface by Okwui Enwezor, brief biographical notes of the participating artists, artists' writings and project proposals for Documenta11. The catalogue appendix is provided in a separate booklet with detailed artist biographies and a list of exhibited works.

Goshka Macugas hat zwei wandfüllende Historiographien für die documenta angefertigt: Ihr fünf mal 17 Meter großer Webteppich "Of what is, that it is; of what is not, that it is not 1" zeigt in einem hellen Raum unter dem Dach des Fridericianums die Gäste eines im Februar 2012 im bei Kabul gelegenenden Bagh-e-Babur veranstalteten Festessens vor der Runie des Darul-Aman-Palasts; als Vorlage diente eine digitale Fotocollage. Für einen zweiten Teppich verarbeitete die in London lebende, polnische Künstlerin Fotos von der Entgegennahme des Arnold-Bode-Preises im Oktober 2011. "Of what is, that it is; of what is not, that is not 2" (drei mal zwölf Meter) ist, ebenfalls im Halbkreis gehängt, während der documenta in Kabul zu sehen.

Der Amerikaner Theaster Gates .... hat eines der wohl größten und ungewöhnlichsten Projekte der dOCUMENTA (13) in Angriff genommen. Ein 1826 in Kassel gebautes mehrstöckiges Wohnhaus und Hotel, das Hugenottenhaus, das im Krieg schwer beschädigt wurde und seit den 1970er Jahren leer steht, hat Gates in eine Art deutsch-amerikanische Kulturkommune verwandelt. Schon seit Wochen leben und arbeiten dort junge Menschen aus Chicago und Kassel. Das Ziel des amerikanischen Künstlers und Aktivisten: neue Modelle des Miteinander-Lebens und des Kulturaustauschs zu entwickeln. Oder - wie es die dOCUMENTA-Macher ausdrücken: "dem üblichen Verlauf von Gentrifizierung soll entgegengewirkt werden". Stattdessen soll durch Kooperationen und dem gemeinschaftlichen Einsatz von Fähigkeiten, Ressourcen und Ideen das Leben vor Ort entscheidend verbessert werden. In Kassel steht das Hugenottenhaus allen Besuchern offen. Sie können jeden Raum betreten und ihn sich ansehen - ausgenommen die Schlafzimmer -, und sich mit den Bewohnern austauschen. Ein Stück gelebte Utopie und eine eindrucksvolle begehbare Skulptur.
