05/18/2009 - This year is the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. To me, it's a bit surreal because I was in high school at the time watching what was happening on a tv screen half a world away - and cheering them on. (Most of them weren't that much older than I...and it reminded me how people can make a change peacefully...)
Anyhow, Here in Teltow, the area was on the old "soviet" side, but the part across the canal was on the "free" side. These are the remnants of the wall - which were piled up during and after the construction of the new road going directly to Berlin. 20 years on, and these are what's left - 2 blocks away from where I live - shoved aside by bulldozers- crumbling, cracking, chipped away by souvenier seekers - a bad memory and yet... a piece of this country and this town's history that isn't being preserved. Maybe its good, maybe not - but either way, here's the pictures - including the graffiti that changes more rapidly than I can say.

After crossing the border you don't get to sigh with relief because rebels can cross borders too and leave landmines to welcome refugees.
What rattled me to my core was not how small they are. It was the fact that our nurse tour guide explained some guerillas started painting them bright yellow because the food packages dropped by US aid groups were yellow boxes. Children were then enticed to run over to pick them up, which resulted in deaths and missing limbs.

The fishermen at lake inle are famous for their style of rowing with one leg. This enables them to have the hands free for fishing.
Please keep in mind:
Burma (Myanmar) is ruled by a military junta. In 1990 Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the people and imprisoned for the next 20 years after the election by the military.
In 2010 a election was staged to keep the military leaders in their current positions. People are starving and are forced to work.
All the pictures you may see in my stream are very onesided, as it is prohibited to take pictures of the military and the police. Also I just do not take pictures of poor people on the streets and there are a lot of very poor people in Burma.
The Burmese people are the nicest people I ever met and should be supported, even if I don´t really know how.
The country needs support. I posted some links to some international organizations helping Burma.
Burma is NOT the usual travel destination! Even if I am avoided all governement fees as far as possible (partly in long hours of bus travel) I still can´t say that I am sure travelling the country helps the people or should be boycotted as proposed by some people.
The government just moved the capital to Naypyidaw. When I saw it from the bus passing it, I had tears in my eyes seeing how the "Generals" collect the money building fancy buildings and streets around them with people starving. I was so shocked that I did not even took a picture...

MSF discusses the press release "Children Living with HIV Deserve Fair Treatment."
Mexico City, August 5, 2008 - Treating children and adolescents living with HIV effectively in resource-limited settings is possible, but adapted medicines, diagnostic tools, and treatment strategies are urgently needed to prevent more deaths, according to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). In "Running in Place," a briefing document released by MSF this week at the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, MSF exposes the formidable challenges the organization still faces in treating over 10,000 children under 15 years of age on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in over 50 projects around the world.
