During the dry season we got a glimpse of what a monsoon probably looks like. While waiting for a local bus to arrive two hours late just in time, I took a series of vehicles passing by.
No photoshop has been applied. The motion blur is straight out of the camera.
Please keep in mind:
Burma (Myanmar) is ruled by a military junta. In 1990 Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the people and imprisoned for the next 20 years after the election by the military.
In 2010 a election was staged to keep the military leaders in their current positions. People are starving and are forced to work.
All the pictures you may see in my stream are very onesided, as it is prohibited to take pictures of the military and the police. Also I just do not take pictures of poor people on the streets and there are a lot of very poor people in Burma.
The Burmese people are the nicest people I ever met and should be supported, even if I don´t really know how.
The country needs support. I posted some links to some international organizations helping Burma.
Burma is NOT the usual travel destination! Even if I am avoided all governement fees as far as possible (partly in long hours of bus travel) I still can´t say that I am sure travelling the country helps the people or should be boycotted as proposed by some people.
The government just moved the capital to Naypyidaw. When I saw it from the bus passing it, I had tears in my eyes seeing how the "Generals" collect the money building fancy buildings and streets around them with people starving. I was so shocked that I did not even took a picture...

The Rohingyas are a Muslim minority from the North Rakhine State in western Burma. Over the past forty years, the Burmese government has systematically stripped over 1 million Rohingya of their citizenship. Recognized as one of the most oppressed ethnic groups in the world, the Rohingya are granted few social, economic and civil rights. They are subjected to forced labor, arbitrary land seizure, religious persecution, extortion, the freedom to travel, and the right to marry. Because of the abuse they endure in Burma, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Burma to seek sanctuary in neighboring Bangladesh. In the refugee camps along the south east coast where they settle, most are not recognized as refugees and are considered illegal economic migrants. Unwanted and unwelcome, they receive little or no humanitarian assistance and are vulnerable to exploitation and harassment. In recent years, the Rohingya have paid brokers to smuggle them by boat from Bangladesh to Malaysia and even beyond to Australia, sparking the attention of governments throughout the region.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has confirmed that the statelessness of the Rohingya is not just a Burma-related problem, but a problem with larger regional implications.

It was pretty striking to arrive at the park and see a homeless man fast asleep on a bench directly outside the area that was set up as a refugee camp. Internally Displaced Person indeed.

An MSF humanitarian affairs officer speaks with two brothers from Somalia who fled the war-torn city of Mogadishu to come to Yemen through the Gulf of Aden on a smuggler’s boat. Boatloads of people routinely arrive on Yemen's southern shores; the majority are Somalis fleeing war and persecution at home. Passengers are often violently abused by the smugglers.

Riley & Anne Volunteering in Guatemala Quetzaltenango Health Care Program: In Guatemala there are networks of public health centers offering free of charge care. One of these centers is located in the town of Xela. Volunteer in an outpatient environment which caters to poor families living in Xela. Spanish speaking volunteers with a health back ground (medical/nursing students, EMT) are welcome. Patients see vary between 200-300 per day.
Medical volunteering will allow you to give patient checkups, examining babies, taking weights, checking vitals, and shadowing the local medical staff. We need volunteers with Intermediate Spanish knowledge.*This program can be combined with Language Immersion classes.

Dig a hole and place this over it. Educational component goes with it for people unfamiliar with such facilities. Guide said sometimes there were no facilities, just go in the field, but when number of people are big, toilets must be dug.
Our tour guide is a nurse and she had just gotten back three weeks ago from a few months in Haiti. She said that this is exactly what the average tent looks like right now for the people who are still living without homes.
The block sitting out front is an example of measurement. In Haiti, the space between tents is only as wide as that block.

I got the chance to see the dining room without any other visitors and at that time it was a very quite dark room. I just spotted this little cat with the same opinion taking a nap below one of the dining tables.
The turquoise color of the building in the background is very typical for Burma and you see it everywhere.

On our last full day in Burma we took the Circle Line that goes around Yangon. It is basically the life line of yangon enabling the people/farmers to bring there goods into the city. Even if we traveled around quite a lot in Burma it was still nice in the train. It was the slowest train I ever traveled and it took 3 hours for a few miles. In between the train was completely crowed with all different people.
What I realized in the train was that it is hard to draw a line between evil and good. We were placed next to the train guards, officially probably for our safety ;)
They had quite some fun and one of them even had his girlfriend next to him. Even if they belong to the bad government I believe they were no bad people. They are just trying to make some money for there living.
The fish always stinks from the head down. The head has to be cut!

Doctors without Borders brought a "refugee camp" to Chicago to present the work they do and to show people some elements of life as a refugee.
Doctors Without Borders put on this exhibit for five days with guided tours. I was glad to see lots of school kids were on field trips to see the exhibit. Being a connoisseur of alternative housing paired with emergencies, I made the trek up to see it and rode my bike from Caltrain. It was one of the hottest days this October. Over 80°. Pretty eery. Just like summer, my mother said, only the days are shorter.

Burma (Myanmar) is ruled by a military junta. In 1990 Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the people and imprisoned for the next 20 years after the election by the military.
In 2010 a election was staged to keep the military leaders in their current positions. People are starving and are forced to work.
All the pictures you may see in my stream are very onesided, as it is prohibited to take pictures of the military and the police. Also I just do not take pictures of poor people on the streets and there are a lot of very poor people in Burma.
The Burmese people are the nicest people I ever met and should be supported, even if I don´t really know how.
The country needs support. I posted some links to some international organizations helping Burma.
Burma is NOT the usual travel destination! Even if I am avoided all governement fees as far as possible (partly in long hours of bus travel) I still can´t say that I am sure travelling the country helps the people or should be boycotted as proposed by some people.
The government just moved the capital to Naypyidaw. When I saw it from the bus passing it, I had tears in my eyes seeing how the "Generals" collect the money building fancy buildings and streets around them with people starving. I was so shocked that I did not even took a picture...

The ppor people in Burma often just do not know what to do with the garbage and handle it like they did for centuries, they throw it behind there houses.
While in the cities some garbage is burnt, you still see it everywhere. Especially on the land its just everywhere - very sad to see.
But the governement will tell you that the millions they make with selling natural gas to Thailand and China is used for such things. I doubt it!
