Former Greenland Dock, Surrey Docks, one of the few remaining sections of the Surrey Docks complex.
Greenland Dock is the oldest of London's wet docks, opened in 1699 as the Howland Great Wet Dock, used mainly for re-fitting ships in the East India trade.
Later used by ships on the Greenland whaling trade, which gave it its later name. In the 1800s, timber became the main import at the Surrey Docks.
Closed in 1970, it is now used for leisure purposes.
Late 14c / early 15c font - the bowl panels appear to show seated under canopies, liturgically vested figures of priests, deacons, bishops and doctors of the church. Underneath are praying angels, evangelist symbols and leaf decoration.
On the stem under carved canopies are mainly female saints - St Catherine with her wheel and sword, St Apollonia with her pincers, and, curiously, 3 seated figures holding babies. Possibly BVM & Christ Child, St Anne holding the infant Virgin & St Elizabeth with the infant John the Baptist. The corners have the remains of crouching lions (?) sadly their heads have been hacked off.
