Highlighting some of the Jazz 45rpms with picture sleeves recently found in Hong Kong. After years of digging through piles of over-abundant commercial rock/pop, I started coming up with some Jazz gems. Their presence in Hong Kong usually indicates a Japanese source.

Here’s our fantasy summer Jazz festival line-up as documented in two posts (the picture sleeves and then the vinyls) where I introduce two out the four artists in each post:

And now, for the second half of our program . . . Django Reinhardt, who tickles the ears of the most reluctant of Jazz fans. Django totally tuned into the American Jazz tradition (and hosted/played with the African-Americans Jazz men who visited Paris) The tracks on this 45rpm offer something new to my ears, including a rendition of Debussy’s “Nuages”: www.pbs.org/jazz/biography/artist_id_reinhardt_django.htm

And finally . . . someone who can connect us with the “modern era” (and our own times), Gerry Mulligan: www.gerrymulligan.com/

I suspect this is the rarest of the four 45rpms, coming from a Stockholm, Sweden label that has left no trace on the web (though there seems to be a current Jazz label from Stockholm!). The record has small bubbles on the surface (inferior or recycled plastic, like some Jamaican releases) but it plays and its cool. I want the other tracks listed on the back of the record's sleeve.

"Like Marylou Williams, she can maintain a rollicking left hand that

segues easily from stride to boogie ‐ woogie while tickling the piano's

upper register into sublime submission. Similarities to Jerry Lee

Lewis are probably not impertinent either..." New York Times

The Man with the Jazz Guitar released on DVD.

The delightful portrait of one of Britain's finest jazz guitarists and most accomplished broadcasters, Ken Sykora.

★★★★ Herald Scotland

"Affectionate, affecting and altogether delightful" The Observer

Available at www.amazon.co.uk/The-Man-Jazz-Guitar-Sykora/dp/B009NCKLQO...

Discovered at the age of 19 by Ivor Mairants and twice voted Britain's best guitarist, Ken's musical career was cut short by the 2nd World War and then by rock'n'roll. He moved into broadcasting and in the late 50s, inspired a generation of guitarists through his popular BBC radio programme, Guitar Club. By the late 60s he was one of Britain's most loved radio broadcasters. But at the peak of his popularity in the early 70s, he suddenly and unexpectedly quit the BBC in London, moving his family to Scotland, to run a hotel 'in the middle of nowhere'.

By the time of his death in 2006, Ken was a forgotten artist. Fortunately, he had left behind a vast archive of rare recordings, documents and memorabilia from which his fascinating life story was uncovered.

Featuring intimate interviews with his three children, close friends and colleagues, it is the captivating story of a modest man who dedicated his life to sharing his love of music, words, food and Django Reinhardt.

A true individual with an inspirational approach to life, Ken Sykora is a fine talent to discover, enjoy and remember.

Here’s our fantasy summer Jazz festival line-up as documented in two posts (the picture sleeves and then the vinyls) where I introduce two out the four artists in each post:

Clarence Williams is a good place to start (in Jazz) as he has the New Orleans pedigree (and it’s deep).

All you have to note is that he played on and produced the first Bessie Smith records, but of course there would be more to it than that: redhotjazz.com/williams.html

And then we have . . . the venerable Benny Carter, himself super-deep in the historical flow of Jazz (but moving us a little forward). Some of my favorite Jazz recordings were made in the era when Big Band players broke off into smaller quartets and quintets. This music sounds smooth, sophisticated, swinging, in some ways epitomizing Jazz.: www.bennycarter.com/bio.shtml

"Gorgeous, blonde bombshell with a dynamite body, a magnificent voice, a wild

sense of humor...(She is) an extremely intelligent Vassar graduate who can play

four or five

instruments and challenge every premise you might have about her as she zips through her

set ‐ her song selections are impeccably chosen. (She has) a dazzling voice ‐ a superb singer

miles above most of the rock stars of today ...a comic mind...She turns excess and extravagance

into an art form and anchors it with stunning simplicity. " New York Post

supernovas on the planet...

One of those rare luminous souls...

beautiful, wickedly funny, anointed with

wisdom, and her music

possesses Native American mystical and healing qualities. like Billie

Holiday or Jimi Hendrix or Miles Davis or Sun Ra..." Dimitri Monroe,

Suddenly the mood turns Acadian/Cajun - the music of French America! Phoebe is clog dancing in spike heels while keeping up a lightening fast improvisation on the accordion.
