Around Dec. 24, 2010.

Mona and Lydia and the folks and Taj and Django showed up and we drew and played with mazes and I got to answer an intriguing question from two or three weeks earlier:

Somehow, we were talking about ink and Taz said, " Why does ink have water in it ?"

Good question, but I couldn't think of a way to answer it. So I went half way to an answer by getting a couple of wooden stir sticks for us to draw with, dipping the sticks in my coffee. That was fun but the question still hung there. I went home and thought about it.

This time, I had an answer ready: I asked Mona for some dry, fresh, coffee from the grinder in a little paper cup, an inch deep.

Taj anticipated where we were headed and went and got two stir sticks.

I told Taj that ink is powder; we would pretend that the coffee was ink. We dipped our stir sticks in the cup of dry coffee and the lines we tried to draw were totally blank. Taj got it right away, with the kind of beaming smile, we see in this picture.

The point was made, but we went ahead and he put a little water in the cup of dry coffee and we got the most beautiful lines.
