The painting in the rear of the main lobby is entitled "Talents Diversified Find Vent In Myriad Form". It depicts the farmer, a man with a sickle, venturing into fertile fields.
Close examination of this mural shows the steel industry and the building industry emblematically portrayed in the background, while dredging machines, airplanes and many other Buffalo products are also depicted. Also, the boom of a ship represents the vast shipping interests while Buffalo is depicted giving up the fruit of her land. (From the city's Web site.)

At Facebook, we have diversified needs for a high performance, versatile, scalable and fault-tolerant stream processing system. We built a low level Stream Processing system called Stylus to enable developers quickly build stream processing applications for these needs. Stylus is currently being used by many teams at Facebook at scale. One of such use cases is currently processing 100's of billions of events per day. In this talk, I will talk about the architecture of Stylus, and how we tackle challenges such as failure tolerance, backfill, etc. I will also discuss a few selected use cases built on top of Stylus, such as mobile analytics and Instagram trending.

Sandra Chávez Hernández, 23 years old, and her 4-year-old son Diego López Chávez, are seen next to a prickly pear planting in the diversified family plot in the La Corregidora Community, Tierra Colorada, San Miguel Chicagua, Oaxaca, Mexico. Prickly pears are a drought-resistant crop that could serve as an alternative due to the issue of climate change. On their land, the family cultivates maize, beans, squash, prickly pears, fava beans, peas, "quelites," and wheat as part of the traditional family diet. Despite preserving a significant amount of forest, this area has been greatly affected by climate change due to the lack of rainfall, which has endangered the food security of the families relying on agriculture in the region. "What concerns the women in the community the most is that the harvests don't come as they should due to the lack of rain, pest infestations, or various issues," Sandra explains. "We always say that perhaps the population most affected by climate change are women. They are the ones most directly impacted when food starts to become scarce, as they manage the issue of family nutrition. When water becomes scarce, they have greater concerns about water access. When firewood and the natural resources required by rural families become scarce, without a doubt, it's women who are most affected," explains Jesús León Santos from CEDICAM, a partner of CRS.

A NEW AGE BEGAN WITH NEW MAMMAL DIVERSITY
Throughout the Mesozoic Era, mammals had lived in the shadows of the dinosaurs, quietly diversifying into different groups. Most of these groups did not survive the mass extinction at the end of the Mesozoic Era. But the three mammal groups living today-placentals, marsupials, and monotremes-all survived.
Today, placental mammals are by far the largest and most diverse mammal group. The roots of that diversity go back more than 60 million years. The fossils in this room are windows into the very beginnings of some placental mammal types that still live today. Take a closer look at the features that make them unique.
THREE TYPES OF MAMMALS, THREE WAYS TO BE BORN
What's the difference between the three surviving mammal groups? How their babies are born, for one.
•Placentals develop completely in their mother's womb before they are born.
•Marsupials are born before they are fully developed, and continue development outside the womb, often in a pouch.
•Monotremes hatch from eggs.
THE HOOFED MAMMALS
In some mammal lineages, claws evolved into hooves. Hooves provide a stable platform for walking. running, and standing. As hoofed mammals evolved into a variety of different sizes and forms in different environments, some came to have three or four hooves on each foot, some only one.
Hooves evolved as bones at the end of the toes broadened, developing a thick covering of keratin (the same material that forms fingernails). A foot can have more than one hoof, because one hoof is found at the end of each toe.
If you learned to call hoofed mammals "ungulates", you're not alone. That's what they used to be called, when scientists thought all hoofed mammals shared an ancestor and belonged to the same group. But a modern study examining the DNA of different hoofed mammals revealed something interesting: all hoofed mammals probably did not evolve from a common ancestor. This means that hooves actually evolved among different types of mammals at different times.
Fossil evidence has long supported the theory of evolution. Today, the study of DNA is opening new windows onto how life evolved on Earth.
THE EXTRA-JOINTED:XENARTHRANS [name comes from Greek xenos("strange") and orthron ("joint)]
Xenarthrans (zen-AR-thrunz) are mammals that have extra protrusions of bone where the vertebrae fit together: This unique type of vertebral joint may make for a stronger spine. Armadillos, sloths, and anteaters are xenarthrans living today.
Xenarthrans have extra protrusions on some of their vertebrae. These help to brace the bones against one another, strengthening the spine.
Xenarthrans are unusual for another reason, too: as they evolved, they came to lack some or sometimes all—of the usual mammal teeth.
THE TREE DWELLERS: PRIMATES [name comes from Latin primus("first")]
Primates are mammals that evolved special features for life in the trees. Though they originally evolved as tree dwellers, primates have evolved many different lifestyles in different environments in the last 60 million years. Most primates today are still tree dwellers. But some monkeys and apes spit their time between the trees and the ground, and humans live entirely on the ground.
Primates have:
•Grasping hands and feet
•Forward-facing eyes (overlapping fields of vision create better depth perception, helpful when leaping from branch to branch)
•Large brains relative to their body size (probably related to a greater reliance on sight)
THE MEAT EATERS: CARNIVORANS [name comes from Latin carnivorus ("flesh-eating")]
Carnivorans are mammals that evolved special teeth for meat eating. When dinosaurs became extinct, the earth’s largest predators were among them. Carnivorans took the place of these predators in many parts of the world. Over millions of years, carnivorans would diversify dramatically. Cats, dogs, bears, seals, raccoons, weasels-all are carnivorans.
Carnivorans have teeth called carnassial teeth that grow on both upper and lower jaws. These pairs of teeth act like scissors, shearing meat to pieces as jaws open and close.
THE TOOTHY GNAWERS: RODENTS [name comes from Latin rodere ("to gnaw")]
Rodents are mammals that evolved large incisors: teeth for gnawing. With these teeth, rodents can gnaw through tough materials such as wood and nuts. But though rodents all share the same type of teeth, their diets are very diverse: some eat nuts and seeds, others eat insects and other small animals. This ability to adapt to different diets, and to different environments, may explain rodents' success as the largest mammal group today.
A rodent's two pairs of large incisors never stop growing. Because the incisors grow constantly, a rodent's gnawing doesn't wear them away.
