McHale's Bar on Eighth Avenue at the corner off West 46th Street was a mainstay of the Theater District/Times Square area for 62 years, before the building's landlord pushed out the Irish ☘️ bar in 2005 to make way for the Platinum NYC condo tower. When we interviewed the owner Jimmy McHale in 2004 for our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” he told us that he was paying rent on a month-to-month “handshake deal” and had no lease so he expected that he eventually would get pushed out. Scenes from “Sleepers,” “She’s the one” and “Money Train” were all filmed inside this dive bar.

The Patriot Saloon on Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan has sadly closed its doors. This dive bar was known for its old jukebox with country music on rotation and its bartender girls dancing on the bar as well as lots of bras decorating the interior behind the bar and draped on the light fixtures. We are not sure of the exact reasons for its closure but a decline in business due to the pandemic surely factored in.

Federico Archuleta, also known as El Federico, is an Austin, TX graffiti artist who has created several notable murals around town. His several pieces of street art on Guadalupe Street contribute significantly to its unique aesthetic flavor. Most prominent are the stencil-graffiti portraits of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, the Clash and others on the old Tower Records/Varsity Theater building, and his portrait of Bob Dylan on the Hole in the Wall. His pieces are created with stencil and freehand spraypaint techniques, applied in multiple layers with bright, forceful colors.

The iconic dive bar, the Holland Bar on Ninth Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen has sadly permanently closed its doors. Holland Bar was known for its cheap beers 🍻, dollar-bill 💵 lined bar (swipe left for 2nd photo of its old neon sign which was moved inside and held the cremated remains of a former bar patron). This bar certainly will be missed by many and even the late Anthony Bourdain who visited the bar called it a “classic old-man bar…. You know, the kind of place it’s okay to drink during the day.”

Half of the Anvil crew attended the Hip Hop Dive Bar Bus Tour, organized by our own entertainment director, Leisa. The first stop was Slammers on Stark, where this photo was taken.
Please join us tomorrow Saturday September 14th from 1-3 PM at Rudy’s Bar & Grill for our “Great Bars of New York City” book release & signing event in @rudysbar backyard at Ninth Avenue between 44th & 45th Streets in Hell’s Kitchen. (Swipe left for 2nd photo).
•
We chose to include Rudy’s in our new book as it is one of the last affordable dive bars, where you can get a beer 🍺 and a shot of whiskey for only $5 and also get a free hot dog with your drink. Rudy’s which was one of the first bars to receive a liquor license in 1933 after Prohibition ended is even mentioned in the 1970 Steely Dan song “Black Cow”: “I saw you in Rudy’s/ You were very high”. Other famous patrons who have frequented this iconic dive bar throughout the years, including Al Capone, Frank Sinatra, Slash, Drew Barrymore, and Julia Roberts.
•
We hope you can celebrate with us and our dog Hudson (swipe left for 3rd photo) tomorrow at Rudy’s backyard 1-3 PM where we will be signing copies of our book $40/copy

Billymark’s West on the corner of 9th Ave & 29th Street has sadly permanently closed. This iconic dive bar was founded in 1956 and was known for its cheap drinks, long hours (open 8 am - 4 am) and its jukebox selection. Since 1999, the bar was owned by brothers Billy & Mark Penza, whose late father, Hank owned Mars Bar, the East Village dive bar which was forced to close in 2011 when the building it was located in was demolished to make way for a luxury rental hi-rise building. Owners, Billy and Mark retired earlier this year and the bar was taken over by a team including local resident, Kevin Peet who gave the bar a “face lift” but the revamp did not work out and for rent sign by owner signage is currently up on the closed one-story storefront. Let us know if you ever visited Billymarks West and share some of your stories with us.
