Randomly, when I was making this, I was thinking about one of the old 1970's Public Information FIlms/Adverts in Britain:
Widely distributed across central & South America but generally uncommon, small plover of beaches, coastal lagoons, lakeshores, gravel bars, and sandbars along rivers. This the only individual we saw on this trip gave good views as it fed along the shore of the main lagoon at SFF Los Flamencos near Camerones (La Guajira/Colombia).

A few kewl cloudscapes presented itself as I was getting my bearings on what cells to follow since nothing was severe.
Storm cells were redeveloping to my southwest but I only had a few hours till I had to work. I would eventually head east then back to Hwy 136 west...
A few final surreal shots from that evening's drive back home. There is no place like Nebraska!

Rear DPU (distributed power unit) on NS train 055 (unit train of pipe loads) passing through Boyce, Virginia on May 22, 2024.
The most widely distributed resident game bird in North America, living now or recently in all of the Canadian Provinces and in 38 of the 49 states on the continent. Their range in the East extends from near the tree-line in Labrador to northern Georgia and northeastern Alabama, and they once occurred as far south as Arkansas in the central part of the continent, although now they occur only in isolated pockets west of the Appalachians and south of the states bordering the Great Lakes. Quite isolated populations live in the Black Hills of South Dakota and the Turtle Mountains in North Dakota. In the mountains of the West, they range south to central Wyoming and central Utah, but apparently never reached most of the mountains of Colorado, northern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. Ruffed Grouse have become established where they were not native in both Newfoundland and Nevada by transplanting wild-trapped birds. On the Pacific Coast, Ruffed Grouse occur on the western slopes of the Cascades and in the coastal ranges south into northwestern California (but not in the high Sierras), and north to the Yukon River valley in Alaska. By far the major portion of the Ruffed Grouse range and population is in regions where snow is an important part of the winter scene and consistently covers the ground from late November to late March, early April or later. The Ruffed Grouse is a hearty, snow-loving, bud-eating native which thrives during severe winters that decimate flocks of partridges, quail, pheasants and turkeys.

A common and beautiful noctuid moth which is widely distributed throughout Europe as far east as the Urals and to North Africa. A strongly migratory species and usually nocturnal.

Flood survivors in Sindh, Pakistan, receive aid items funded by Caritas members. Many homes and crops in this region (Khairpur) were flooded.
Caritas is providing the humanitarian aid--like sleeping mats, tarps, buckets, water purification tablets, and mosquito netting--to families whose homes were flooded. Caritas USA is also planning to build thousands of shelters for those whose homes are completely destroyed.

Key information
Noisy and gregarious, these cheerful exploiters of man's rubbish and wastefulness have managed to colonise most of the world. The ultimate avian opportunist perhaps. Monitoring suggests a severe decline in the UK house sparrow population, recently estimated as dropping by 71 per cent between 1977 and 2008 with substantial declines in both rural and urban populations. While the decline in England continues, Breeding Bird Survey data indicate recent population increases in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Where and when to see them
House sparrows can be found from the centre of cities to the farmland of the countryside, they feed and breed near to people. It is a species vanishing from the centre of many cities, but is not uncommon in most towns and villages. It is absent from parts of the Scottish Highlands and is thinly distributed in most upland areas.
Breeding
House sparrows usually nest in loose colonies and since they don't defend a proper territory, nests can be as little as 20-30 cm apart.
How house sparrows nest
Nests are often placed in holes and crevices within buildings and they will readily use nestboxes. Free-standing nests are also frequently built, in creepers against walls and in thick hedges or conifers.
Pairs often remain faithful to their nest site and to each other for life, although a lost mate of either sex is normally replaced within days. A hole is filled with dry grass or straw with a nesting chamber lined with feathers, hairs, string and paper. Feathers may be plucked from a live pigeon!
The main nesting season is from April to August, although nesting has been recorded in all months. Most birds lay two or three clutches, but in a good year fourth attempts are not uncommon.
About house sparrow chicks
The female lays two to five eggs at daily intervals and often starts to incubate part way through egg-laying. Both sexes incubate, and the chicks hatch after 11-14 days. The parents share nesting duties equally. Chicks are brooded for 6-8 days, but can control their own body temperature only when 10 or 11 days old.
The youngsters are fed on a variety of invertebrates, including aphids, caterpillars, beetles and grasshoppers. Seeds and vegetable matter are also given, particularly during periods when invertebrates are scarce (e.g. cold weather) and become more important after the chicks leave the nest.
The young fledge 14-16 days after hatching. They are unable to feed themselves for about a week after leaving the nest and are cared for by their parents for around a fortnight. Post-fledging care is frequently left to the male as the hen prepares for the next brood. She can begin laying her next clutch of eggs within days of the previous brood leaving the nest.
Newly independent young often gather in large flocks, anywhere there is an abundance of seed, invertebrates and other suitable foods. These may be areas of wasteland or around garden feeding sites. Later, rural flocks may move on to grainfields to feed on the ripening grain, often joined by adult birds, once they have finished nesting. Flocks tend to break up through the autumn and birds return to their nesting colony sites.
Population trends
The house sparrow is common through most of its world range, and can tolerate a wide variety of climates.
The recent decline of house sparrows
UK house sparrow populations have fluctuated greatly over the centuries, with a gradual decline during the last 100 years.
Causes for the rapid recent declines, particularly in urban and suburban environments, remain largely undetermined, although research is underway that aims to establish the cause(s), and develop conservation solutions.
Declines in rural house sparrow populations are thought to be linked to changes in agricultural practices, particularly the loss of winter stubbles and improved hygiene measures around grain stores.
House sparrow numbers were not monitored adequately before the mid-1970s. Since then, numbers in rural England have nearly halved while numbers in towns and cities have declined by 60 per cent. Because of these large population declines, the house sparrow is now red-listed as a species of high conservation concern.

People have a love-hate relationship with the house sparrow. However, control attempts have failed to limit the sparrows numbers and range.

People have a love-hate relationship with the house sparrow. For many they are the most familiar of wild animals, bringing life to city centres and other man-made places, bereft of wildlife.
The house sparrows partiality to grain crops and the damage and destruction this caused resulted in attempts to control their numbers. From the mid-18th century most parishes had sparrow clubs with the sole objective to destroy as many sparrows as possible. Bounties were paid for sparrows until the late 19th century, when it was accepted that the control measures did not work. Similar failures were recorded in a number of other European countries.
Ironically, as people in Europe were paid to kill sparrows as pests, others deliberately introduced them to places as far apart as Australia and New York. Initially they were welcomed, although later appreciation turned to serious concern for the impact on crops. By then sparrows had become well established and control attempts have failed to limit the sparrows numbers and range.
How sparrows behave with other animals
Sparrows are aggressive tend to dominate feeders in gardens and prevent other birds from getting to the food. They harass other birds and steal their food and take over their nests, particularly house martins. The eviction and interference often results in a reduction in breeding success and can cause desertion of even large martin colonies.
Sparrows frequently tear to pieces the nests of martins and swallows and eject any eggs or chicks therein. The owners are unable to stop them.
Sparrows are very resilient and for their size have remarkably few serious predators. Main predators are domestic cats, owls (especially tawny) and sparrowhawks, but none are capable of affecting the size of the sparrow population, with the possible exception of localised effects by cats.

Food packs are currently being distributed among all residents of the Subic Town by the local municipal government in a gesture aimed at bringing Christmas cheers to its constituents.
The food assistance consist mainly of one pack of Spaghetti noodles and one pack of tomato sauce, which the recipients may cook and serve for their family's Christmas Eve dinner.
It is provided to all the people living in all the 16 villages of the first-class municipality, regardless of their economic and social status.

Distributed from Mexico to southern Brazil. I have also photographed it in Costa Rica, but this is the better image. The large eyes give away that this is a nocturnal species that usually spends the day roosting in dense mangroves.

Corvus is a widely distributed genus of medium-sized to large birds in the family Corvidae. The genus includes species commonly known as crows, ravens, rooks and jackdaws; there is no consistent distinction between "crows" and "ravens", and these appellations have been assigned to different species chiefly on the basis of their size, crows generally being smaller than ravens. In Europe, the word "crow" is used to refer to the carrion crow or the hooded crow, while in North America, it is used for the American crow, fish crow, or the northwestern crow.
Ranging in size from the relatively small pigeon-sized jackdaws (Eurasian and Daurian) to the common raven of the Holarctic region and thick-billed raven of the highlands of Ethiopia, the 45 or so members of this genus occur on all temperate continents except South America, and several islands. The crow genus makes up a third of the species in the family Corvidae. The members appear to have evolved in Asia from the corvid stock, which had evolved in Australia. The collective name for a group of crows is a 'flock' or a 'murder'. The genus name is Latin for "raven".
Recent research has found some crow species capable of not only tool use, but also tool construction. Crows are now considered to be among the world's most intelligent animals with an encephalization quotient equal to that of many non-human primates.
In medieval times, crows were thought to live abnormally long lives. They were also thought to be monogamous throughout their long lives. They were thought to predict the future, to predict rain and reveal ambushes. Crows were also thought to lead flocks of storks while they crossed the sea to Asia.

Anartia jatrophae is distributed from the southern USA to Bolivia and Argentina. It is also found on most Caribbean islands. When freshly emerged jatrophae has a beautiful mother-of-pearl luminescence that is difficult to reproduce in a photograph, but after only a short while the colours fade to a dull greyish-white.
This is a sun-loving species. It is active mainly in the mornings when it can be seen basking on the ground or on low foliage. Later in the day when temperatures rise it rests in semi-shaded situations at the forest edge, or sits in open sunlight with the wings held erect. In the late afternoon when the temperature begins to dip, the butterflies commonly bask at the top of coarse grasses and herbage.

Late evening on hot and humid August evening in Nebraska. Warnings popped up about an hour before this storm was even visible to the eye over the horizon at sunset.
Spectacular Colors emitting from this stacked supercell. Cloud to Cloud Lightning shooting off every few seconds made this a storm chasers dreamscape.
Gear in hand that evening I traveled north out of Odessa Nebraska. Now about 2 miles to the east of Amherst Nebraska. This storm was strengthening and moving almost due south, southeast, meaning it was coming right at my location.
It would be a Historic Event to capture! Now remastered to the original color with no enhancements. Enjoy!

Just to let you know, those images were WAY over processed, over saturated etc. Yes I'm guilty. But it was the way I did things back then. I don't anymore.
Every year I go back and edit a few sets of images that deserve to be re-edited or reprocess from raw. I'm also adding several images from this set I didn't share last time around.

Porpoises are the commonest and most widely distributed cetaceans in north European seas yet they are frustratingly difficult to see. They only surface occasionally, usually for a split second when you get a glimpse of the back and triangular dorsal fin. They usually surface two or three times before taking a deeper dive, so disappearing for about five minutes then resurfacing elsewhere. This behaviour makes them frustratingly difficult to see, let alone photograph. I just searched Flickr to see how others had fared photographing Porpoises and the vast majority are misidentified Dolphins that are often much easier to photograph. There seem to be rather few good quality photos of genuine Harbour Porpoises on Flickr. When I was at Spurn Point we spotted maybe half a dozen Porpoises feeding on fish in the tidal race just offshore. Usually my views of Porpoises are quite distant but these were close. Amazingly I managed this lucky shot of two surfacing together which I assume is a mother and well-grown calf. None of the other Porpoises surfaced simultaneously. You can just about see the blowhole on the right hand animal. Incidentally cetaceans can never fully go to sleep as they have to consciously come to the surface to breathe. So they shut down one hemisphere of their brain at a time to sleep, like many birds do. Harbour Porpoises are found mainly in waters 20-200m depth from the Arctic down as far as Senegal, and North Carolina in the East Atlantic, But this same species is also found in the North Pacific, which is the only place I have previously managed to photograph them: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/15305706026/in/photolist The name Porpoise comes from Mediaeval Latin "Porcopiscus" meaning Pig-fish (Porcus; Pig, Piscis; Fish) and the scientific name Phocoena phocoena is a Latinised form of the Greek word for Porpoise (Phokaina). They are also Europe's smallest cetacean at about 1.5m. The next smallest is Common Dolphin at about 1.7 to 2m in length, while Bottlenose Dolphins are much larger at 3 to 3.8m.

Still mostly fresh in new paint, CSX 3194, the "Honoring our Law Enforcement" tribute GEVO rolls down the Lurgan Subdivision in the middle of the train. The locomotive is acting as the distributed power unit (DPU) here - it led the intermodal train to Chambersburg the day before. As the yard builds the outbound train, the DPU and is placed against a cut of cars that will be dropped in Cumberland, MD, making for an easy drop. They will eventually make their way to Baltimore while the rest of the train heads for Ohio and Chicago.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

作品にはサインなどがいっさい記されていなかったため、彼の作品だと断定できませんでした。
しかし、様々な鑑定の結果、陽の光を浴びました。
誰にも気づかれない作品。肩書がなくとも静かに語りかける作品。
僕はこれから様々な形で、多くの皆様に提供できるよう努めてゆきます。

These are a well distributed species. The European Starlings stick around for the winter but I notice their numbers are significantly reduced.

Starlings have fine feathers
In the winter, their plumage is brownish with white spots. By summer, they dazzle and shine. When you catch them in sunlight, their feathers show shades of metallic greens, blues and purples. Scientists have discovered Starlings and other birds have an extra receptor that lets them see ultraviolet light. did not have a camera.. drove like a lunatic home, grabbed the cam and
headed to the roof .. made it just in time.. it was so different in a
couple of minutes..
