Distributing food to the guests at our potlatch.

There is no “best” way to distribute data within applications. If you ask an experienced architect for advice you’ll get a litany of followup questions before they’re willing to make recommendations: LAN or WAN? Large blocks of data or small? How many updates per second? They’ll also want to know how “real-time” you need it to be (i.e. what kind of latency you can tolerate), how many recipients each update needs to go to and what level of delivery or transaction guarantee you need. They’ll want to understand your network environment – private, public, cloud, etc. – and any requirements related to archival, regulatory compliance, uptime and disaster recovery. Each of those factors affects the protocols you may choose and manner of implementation decisions.

Cavaliere d’Italia: Himantopus himantopus. En.: Black-winged Stilt

The Black-winged Stilt or Common Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) is a widely distributed very long-legged wader in the avocet and stilt family (Recurvirostridae). Opinions differ as to whether the birds treated under the scientific name H. himantopus ought to be treated as a single species and if not, how many species to recognize. Most sources[citation needed] today accept 2–4 species.

Adults are 33–36 cm long. They have long pink legs, a long thin black bill and are blackish above and white below, with a white head and neck with a varying amount of black. Males have a black back, often with greenish gloss. Females' backs have a brown hue, contrasting with the black remiges. In the populations that have the top of the head normally white at least in winter, females tend to have less black on head and neck all year round, while males often have much black, particularly in summer. This difference is not clear-cut, however, and males usually get all-white heads in winter.

Immature birds are grey instead of black and have a markedly sandy hue on the wings, with light feather fringes appearing as a whitish line in flight.

The breeding habitat of all these stilts is marshes, shallow lakes and ponds. Some populations are migratory and move to the ocean coasts in winter; those in warmer regions are generally resident or short-range vagrants. In Europe, the Black-winged Stilt is a regular spring overshoot vagrants north of its normal range, occasionally remaining to breed in northern European countries, for example in Britain in 1987.

These birds pick up their food from sand or water. They mainly eat insects and crustaceans.

The nest site is a bare spot on the ground near water. These birds often nest in small groups, sometimes with Avocets.

The Hawaiian population is endangered due to habitat loss and probably also introduced predators. The IUCN recognizes 3 species at present, merging the Hawaiian and South American birds with the Black-necked Stilt; consequently, none of the three is listed as threatened species. The Black-winged Stilt is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds applies.

Monareliefye.org has distributed today 200 school bags to orphan and IDPs students in al-Mutnabi and al-Manar schools in Wadi Ahmed area in the capital Sana'a.

Our project was funded by an anonymous Kuwaiti donor along with the NGO’s online fund-raising campaign.

The two schools are located at Wadi Ahmed area, the most populated area in the capital Sana'a with almost 100,000 people there. Most families are poor and they can't get their food easily. The area also full of IDPs fled from many provinces in the country due to the ongoing conflict in Yemen.

IDPs chose to live in this area because the cost of rent for houses there is a little bit low comparing to houses in other areas in Sana'a.

Mona Relief's ground crew decided to deliver pupils there school bags due to the situation of their families who they are not able to buy them, bags, notebooks, pens or anything.

Most families there are under the poverty line and they can't provide their children daily food.

As we started distribution school bags to pupils in al-Manar and al-Mutnabi schools, we noticed that each class contains from 80-130 students comparing to the other schools in the capital Sana'a. However, the reason behind that is that there is only two schools in that area which are very close to all students living within.

The huge number of students in the Wadi Ahmed area reflects the suffer of students in each class. We have seen students keep standing all time of his studying day, some other sitting on the ground as others sitting on windows of their classes. Even if there is empty classes, there is enough chairs for all students and if there is chairs and classes, there is a lack of teachers to learn them.

Pictures here taken today by Mona Relief during school bags distribution showing you the real situation of education and students in Wadi Ahmed area in the capital Sana'a.

Facts about education in Yemen

Millions of children out of school and scores of teachers unpaid - At least two million children, nearly 27 per cent of school-age children are out of school, according to UNICEF. More than 1,690 schools are currently unfit for use due to conflict-related damage, hosting of IDPs or occupation by armed groups. About 2.3 million children need support to access education, including 1.1 million in areas that are acutely affected by conflict. Months of unpaid salaries have aggravated matters. More than 166,000 teachers have had problems receiving their salaries since October 2016 - about 73 per cent of the total number of teachers in Yemen.

A May Day pinback button designed and distributed by the Revolutionary Union (later Revolutionary Communist Party) circa 1973.

History of May Day – the workers day

“In the late 19th century, as trade unions and the labor movement grew, a variety of days were chosen by trade unionists as a day to celebrate labor. May Day was chosen to be International Workers’ Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago.

“On May 1st, 1886, there was a general strike for an eight-hour workday. On May 4th, the police acted to disperse a public assembly in support of the strike, when an unidentified individual threw a bomb. The police responded by firing on the workers.

“This led to the deaths of seven police officers and four civilians; sixty police officers were injured as well as numerous civilians. Hundreds of labor leaders and sympathizers were later rounded up and four were executed by hanging, after a trial that was seen as a miscarriage of justice.

“On May 5th, 1886, in Milwaukee, the state militia was called out by the Governor of Wisconsin at the request of North Chicago Rolling Mills in Bay View to protect their mill. A strike for the eight-hour day a few days earlier had shut down most of the businesses in the area except for North Chicago Rolling Mills.

“As the workers, supports, and their families approached the mill, one of the militias fired upon the crowd which resulted in chaos as a total of seven individuals were killed, including a seven-year-old boy and a man feeding chickens in his yard. This became known as the Bay View Massacre, or the Bay View Tragedy.

“In 1889, at a meeting in Paris held by the first congress of the Second International (an organization of Socialists and Labor Parties,) Raymond Lavigne set forth a proposal calling for an international demonstration on the 1890 anniversary of the Haymarket Massacre.

“May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International’s second congress in 1891. In Amsterdam in 1904, the International Socialist Congress called on all Social Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on the First of May for the legal establishment of the 8=hour day.

“On May 1st, 2017, workers around the country joined with Immigrants and Immigrant Worker Rights organizations to march for rights and dignity for all workers.

“May 1st continues to this day to be an international day to honor all workers and lift up the need for workers’ rights around the globe.”

--by Jay Reinke, Milwaukee Area Labor Council

The United States and some other capitalist countries enacted alternative days to celebrate labor in an effort to downplay the radical roots of May Day.

In the U.S., Labor Day is the official holiday, not May Day.

From Wikipedia:

“There was disagreement among labor unions at this time about when a holiday celebrating workers should be, with some advocating for continued emphasis of the September march-and-picnic date while others sought the designation of the more politically charged date of May 1.

“Conservative Democratic President Grover Cleveland was one of those concerned that a labor holiday on May 1 would tend to become a commemoration of the Haymarket affair and would strengthen socialist and anarchist movements that backed the May 1 commemoration around the globe.

“In 1887, he publicly supported the September Labor Day holiday as a less inflammatory alternative, formally adopting the date as a United States federal holiday through a law that he signed in 1894.”

Nevertheless, socialist, anarchist and communist organizations along with some trade unions have continued the May Day celebration in the United States.
