i must necessarily take a 2 week break from everything to finish my comps and then finish my dissertation proposal. i will be back after that i promise. i need the time with no distractions.
Of late, I've pretty completely taken over the grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking (we used to collaborate on those things), in order to free up more time for Victoria to work on her dissertation proposal and assorted grad school tasks. This has some interesting side-effects. One of the more notable is that I eat more fruit. Doesn't make a lot of sense, I realize. But apparently I am more prone to eating fruit that I picked out and bought myself. Going along with this, I'm bringing leftovers from the night before for lunches more often, and packing an apple along with that helps keep me away from the cookies or other junk food with which I would otherwise supplement my leftovers. So I wind up eating a lot more apples. It also helps that our neighborhood farmers-market-style grocery store (think Whole Foods without attitude or consistent attention to quality) stocks a wide variety of apples this time of year. I've been particularly enjoying Braeburns, Honeycrisps, Jazz, and Pink Ladies.
The lack of sunlight after work is a drag.

I'm on a whirlwind tour up to Virginia - just for one night - tomorrow I defend my dissertation proposal (finally)! Then I catch a late flight back, get in at about 1AM, and get up in time to teach at 7:30. I suspect that will not be my most stellar performance.
So I go to the car rental place and they say, "We are going to give you a free upgrade." I usually rent the cars that are the size of shoe boxes and run on rubber bands. I said "sure" and then they gave me the keys to my very own gangster-mobile. Holy crap - it's like trying to drive an aircraft carrier the thing is sooo huge. I hate it. Give me my shoe box any day. you can keep the leather seats and the v-8 and the "easy to get the blood out" carpeting in the trunk.

Day 184-Had my second dissertation proposal revision meeting with my chair today at my university and I saw this really cool piece of art on this building that is for sale near my university.

I had to clean out dissertations in the storage room one day, and the notes were really entertaining.
My favorite one (I couldn't get a picture of it because there were people hanging out at the time and I didn't want to look shady) was a guy who'd written, "His Name, PhD" on his dissertation proposal, which you can't do, because you're not a doctor yet. The editor circled it and wrote, "Not yet. Sorry."
I laughed for five minutes.

On Friday I defended my dissertation proposal on a conference call with my committee. While I was on the phone in my office, Sharon and Erin decorated my door with signs that said "way to go" and dum dum suckers hanging from pipe cleaners. ok...i've been up all nite writing the last ( i hope ...) of my revisions on my dissertation proposal...the committee asked that i completely revamp the data gathering methodology.....(yeah...just adjust those changes in the 110 pg doc & send back ..mmm'k? ))
going to go lie down.....zone out to some tv....get up later ....& FIND A JOB!~
