LA MORTE TI FA BELLA...

...

Now is the winter of our discontent

Made glorious summer by this sun of York;

And all the clouds that lour’d upon our house

In the deep bosom of the ocean buried...

Is a happy mind.

Pink Peony.

As I wrote the above I was reminded of the oriental story of the traveller who comes across a monk sat upon a rock by the roadside in peaceful meditation. They begin conversing and the traveller asks the monk...

"Can you tell me the difference between heaven and hell?"

"Yes" says the monk, and returns to his meditation.

"Tell me then" says the traveller but the monk remains silent. The traveller keeps repeating "tell me, tell me:, each time becoming angrier and angrier until at last he picks up a rock and yells -

"Tell me or I will kill you!"

"And there you have it" says the monk "there is the difference".

So a peaceful mind is indeed a happy mind and a mind only becomes peaceful when it is free from desire and aversion and is in full acceptance of what is, and what comes. A mind forever seeking this or avoiding that is a mind of discontent - self evidently.

What's any of that got to do with this flower you might rightly ask - well, it kind of reminded me of the shape of the brain, which led to mind which led to the title, which in turn led to the anecdote. So, if you got this far - odd how things work out.......

Despair

by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

I have experienc'd

The worst, the World can wreak on me--the worst

That can make Life indifferent, yet disturb

With whisper'd Discontents the dying prayer--

I have beheld the whole of all, wherein

My Heart had any interest in this Life,

To be disrent and torn from off my Hopes

That nothing now is left. Why then live on ?

That Hostage, which the world had in it's keeping

Given by me as a Pledge that I would live--

That Hope of Her, say rather, that pure Faith

In her fix'd Love, which held me to keep truce

With the Tyranny of Life--is gone ah ! whither ?

What boots it to reply ? 'tis gone ! and now

Well may I break this Pact, this League of Blood

That ties me to myself--and break I shall !

I fondly remember my old cat, Mr. Purry Furry, with this tribute to cats and color. I think we all need a little dose of color in our lives as this long winter of our discontent lingers on.

"Listen to the color of your dreams." ~ The Beatles

Hong Kong , unfortunate times. After enduring the darkness and anger of the 2019 protests, next up the anxiety and fear of Covid -19. Now the embrace of big brothers security laws.

Miss Martine thinks she's a Cormorant! this little female juvenile is now more and more present on this spot, I'm almost every morning while it is barely clear to enjoy and especially before landed the walkers and other anglers, yesterday morning she came to rest while I unpacked the tent, she stayed there for a few seconds before fleeing with loud cries of discontent, but twenty minutes later she was again stuck on the perch and fishing action .

Sea, Sand & Sun

Hands in the sand,

Feet in the Sea,

Face in the Sun,

An Empty Mind,

A Free Body.

Sea, Sand & Sun

When everything around is trouble and torment, turbulence and tears.

And nothing can be found for chaos and dissent, fever and fear

Step out and turn around,

Let your mind ascend.

Then close your eyes and feel

Sea, Sand & Sun.

When everything is found to fall to discontent, distress and worries

When nothing else is sound and only bad intent, just persevere.

Leave all in the background.

Let your heart consent

Then close your eyes and feel

Sea, Sand & Sun.

Holiday Wish...

At the end, or nearly so, of one long, hard, cold year of reality and our general discontent with it, I see possible glimmers of hope. Not everyone of course, but many are looking inward for answers and finding a new way to look at life. May the light that generally comes into people's hearts at this time of year, illuminate the way forward for a better year. No matter the details of our own individual and personal beliefs, how we perceive our world and how we choose to react may well be the keys to happiness and success. May blessings you never even suspected overwhelm your lives this season and in the coming year, my friends.

Merry Christmas from our family to yours

Often times, people will make you think that you're not good enough because their perception of you is defined by a set of parameters that they deem to be perfect. Self-doubt is often crippling and hampers our growth, planting seeds of discontent. But you don't have to be perfect, you just have to be you and the ones that want to be in your life will accept you as you are.

Just be the best version possible and let the world worry about the rest.

Muddle And Mess

~Lindsey Priest~

Looking at my desk

I can see

All manner of mess

In front of me.

There's glue and paper,

Scissors and string,

Hand cream and a camera,

And one ear-ring!

Papers piled high,

A lamp at each side,

A bottle full of juice,

I should take more pride.

I'd like it to be tidy,

But chaos always reigns,

Probably because

I have very muddled brains.

My desk resembles

The tangle in my head,

But it can't be altered

So there's order instead.

Many of my friends

Think in straight lines,

They make me feel crazy,

I can see the signs.

Madness and confusion

That's what I represent,

My desk's in a muddle

But I'm not discontent.

That jumble is me,

It's the way I have been made,

If untidy is in fashion,

I can reach top grade.

So...

Looking at my desk

There will always be,

All manner of mess

In front of me.

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring–it was peace.” ~Milan Kundera

Her stretched little neck was originally a sign of discontent, but I think the little smile shows she was deciding it wasn't so dire to have a wisteria crown.

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.”

Milan Kundera.

The Winter of Discontent as lock down resumes in Toronto next Monday.

We stood there in the icy air, looking at the eagles as the day started waning, pretending to be alive, hiding our unhappiness, though it was already the winter of our seasons...

When you are discontent, you always want more, more, more. Your desire can never be satisfied. But when you practice contentment, you can say to yourself, 'Oh yes - I already have everything that I really need.' Dalai Lama

It is difficult to comprehend the feeling of worry & tumult that I can't help absorbing from the chaotic events in the news each day. The beauty of Mother Nature (if we don't destroy her) provides solace, for it seems that this is truly ... "The winter of our discontent." ~ William Shakespeare

Hope seems tenuous, but I can't stop believing that the spirit of love will overcome all the hatred that has been unleashed ... "No winter lasts forever; no spring skips it turn." ~ Hal Borland

A line from one of the new Bob Dylan songs called My own Version of you.

This was taken at Cherry Lake in Altona. A gloomy day of drizzle and grey clouds put to rest my plans for some birding so my sister and I visited a beach at Altona and then stayed for sunset at Cherry Lakes. The clouds were quite heavy so I didn't think we were going to get much colour. As I was packing up I said to my sister you know it is often when the sun goes down, after the drab grey that the sky can light up. As we were walking back to the car, I turned around and saw the gorgeous colours reflected in the water amongst the reeds. I was pushing my luck as everyone was freezing but no way I was going to leave this. The colours just got deeper and more vibrant.

As things are ramping up again (our winter) in terms of the virus here, the line from Dylan's song stood out.

Everything on the surface looks calm and beautiful but underneath, the anxiety of the things we cannot see bubbles away.

This is a tribute to Sebastian who is a very important part of my life!

The value of life is not in its duration, but in its donation. You are not important because of how long you live, you are important because of how effective you live. - Myles Munroe

The value of life lies not in the length of days, but in the use we make of them... Whether you find satisfaction in life depends not on your tale of years, but on your will. - Michel de Montaigne

If you truly believe in the value of life, you care about all of the weakest and most vulnerable members of society. -

Joni Eareckson Tada

It is impossible to escape the impression that people commonly use false standards of measurement — that they seek power, success and wealth for themselves and admire them in others, and that they underestimate what is of true value in life. - Sigmund Freud, Civilization and Its Discontents

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo💜💜

This was the home of a bourgeois family loyal to Napoleon III in the period of the Rise of the Second Empire in 1852. A mansion on a small island with an incredible seaside landscape was a perfect symbol of the contrast of a period marked by many conflicts of classes. The family consisted of the owner, his wife and a very young son, who later had a second child. There are few recoverable records scattered around the island, most of which are almost completely degraded by nature.

A decade after France was in crisis due to discontent and political instabilities, the family experienced a terrible tragedy where the bourgeois landlord was murdered in a protest in Paris. Months passed, but the widow, psychologically shaken, took a drastic step by taking her own life and leaving two orphaned children.

The remains and belongings of the family are scattered around the island and were manipulated in several later periods.

It is notorious that the abandonment of the mansion in fact happens due to superstitious beliefs and reports of people who say they have seen paranormal activities or entities and refuse to live in a place where such a tragedy happened.

the true vision of reality, that is free from veiling ignorance is the state in which one shines in the heart as the ocean of bliss, the inundation of grace. In the experience of silence that surges there as wholly Self and which it is impossible to think about, not a trace of grief or discontent exists for the jiva (individual soul).

Pashley Manor has one of the finest gardens in England

Nestled in the heart of the High Weald lies a fascinating aristocratic manor - which you can visit. Sussex is full of historical places with connections to the infamous reign of Henry VIII. Whether that be the fascinating museum in Lewes which belonged to Anne of Cleves, or the Ashdown Forest hunting lodge where he came to hunt deer and wild boar.

But this unassuming Grade I listed East Sussex manor has its own claim to fame - with links to the most famous of all the six wives, Anne Boleyn. Despite spending most of her childhood in France and the Netherlands, it is strongly believed that the Queen consort was a regular visitor to the family manor in Ticehurst.

Similarly to its fellow Tudor manor at Bolebroke Castle which was frequented by Henry VIII, Pashley Manor was used as a hunting lodge. The property was initially under Boleyn ownership around the start of the Wars of the Roses in 1457 after being purchased by Sir Geoffrey Boleyn, Anne's great-grandfather who was the Lord Mayor of London at the time. It was then passed down through the family, with Anne's uncle Sir Thomas Boleyn holding court at Pashley in 1518 - about the time of her childhood.

After owning the picturesque manor for almost 80 years the Boleyn family hit their demise following Anne's infamous death. Despite giving birth to a daughter who went on to become Elizabeth I, Anne was causing considerable discontent with Henry VIII as she was unable to provide a male heir.

Following her three miscarriages after Elizabeth's birth, the King began courting Jane Seymour. In order to marry her, Henry had to find a way to end his marriage with Anne. In April 1536 she was investigated for treason, which eventually ended up with her being beheaded one month later. As a result of this unfortunate event the Boleyn family were forced to sell the manor to Sir Thomas May.

May built the beautiful manor house which can be seen today, while his family descendants added a Georgian facade about 200 years later along with the picturesque kitchen garden wall. It continued to be a wealthy aristocratic lodge throughout the following centuries as its gardens were planted around the oak trees which could date back as early as the 15th century. But despite this considerable transition, the property still exhibits much of the medieval and Tudor relics which add to its allure. According to legend it's even haunted by a pair of ghosts, with one of whom said to be that of Anne Boleyn herself.

Pashley Manor is also a former winner of the Christies Garden of the Year award.

In modern times the main attraction of the estate is the lush traditional gardens.

Described as 'one of the finest gardens in England', and a former winner of the Christies Garden of the Year award, Pashley Manor Garden has an array of enticing plants and flowers, with excellent views over nearby valleys.

since winter has decided to stick around into may(!) i thought one more picture of snow and ice would be okay

Is anybody happier because you passed this way?

Does anyone remember that you spoke to them today?

The day is almost over, and its’ toiling time is through.

Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you?

Can you say tonight in parting with the day that’s slipping fast,

That you helped a single person of the many that you passed?

Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said?

Does one whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead?

Did you waste the day or use it? Was it well or sorely spent?

Did you leave a trail of kindness, or a scar of discontent?

As you close your eyes in slumber, do you think that God will say:

“You have earned one more tomorrow by what you did today

We all know that feeling, too much traffic, can't get from here to there like you normally can. This bull and 2 cows were showing, and bellowing, their discontent as they had trouble getting across the road in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley to join the rest of their herd. They finally found a gap and charged thru.

I find bison fascinating....

A few more shots from this encounter in comments.

Hope your holiday shopping is done. May you also break thru the crowds to finish the task.

There was a boy... there was a girl. Did I miss the moment? Had he just proposed to her as my camera scanned the landscape to the right? I shall never know what the occasion was for those two up early on top of Parkhouse, but they turned to take a selfie with the rising sun behind them, no doubt with big smiles on their faces.

They lived in a freer world then. They were just beginning to enjoy newly relaxed lockdown rules. I wonder what now. There was no winter of discontent then. Just some misty autumnal bliss.

Our winter is near.
