As every year, on the third Thursday of November, we celebrate World Philosophy Day. We are few philosophers and not very well known, but our activity of reflection and teaching of this wonderful discipline is increasingly important in these complicated times we live in.
I personally teach philosophy to young people and it is the most exciting activity I have ever done.
Socrates, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Kant are the great minds that will help us to understand ourselves. Sapere Aude!
Happy World Philosophy Day

In parks and open spaces all over Singapore each morning many locals will practice this ancient Chinese discipline of meditative, gentle movements. Taken from a respectful distance and cropped later. In Buddhist teaching the way of Samatha can be described as "a tranquility of mind; a calm abiding, which steadies, composes, unifies and concentrates the mind."
This is the way to describe a serene person. One who is calm and centred even in the midst of a world plunged into chaos. It is a discipline that can only be learned through PRACTISE (i.e the verb).
The Buddhist literature on the relationship between Samatha and Vipassanā (meaning true insight) is extremely voluminous. What sounds like a straightforward relationship to the trivial materialistic Western mind requires (in Buddhist thinking) many lifetimes of discipline and practise to finally realise Awakening (anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi).
Siddhartha Gautama (6th century BC) is said to have realised this within a single lifetime and became the Buddha Shakyamuni ("Sage of the Shakyas").

While the cemetries of the Allied troops have stark white colors, those of the German troops are gray- black and look dead and gloomy.
While the militairy cemetries are an example of discipline and structure, the German variants lack alignment and logic.
It was long be argued that this would be regulated in the Articles 225 and 226, from the Treaty of Versailles, but whoever reads these articles will find that this view is incorrect.
The real reason is that the French after the end of the insane war were ordered tot give the German dead their final resting place and collected the bodies in the sector of Ypres and burried them on free pieces of land, altough it was not obvious that they each received an individual tombstone.
So what we see here is in fact a mass grave, covered with granite slabs bearing their names.
Black evokes bad feelings and the Germans were in the eyes of the Allied the agressor, despite the fact that during investigations after the insane war it appeared that all warring parties had engaged in aggression and had committed atrocities. France, England and Italy had already secretly divided the territories of Germany and its colonies, the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire, in the heat of the battle!
It was of paramount legal importance that, according to the President of the United States Wilson's conviction, Germany should be held responsible but not blamed for the insane war breaking out. However they were incomprehensible responsible for the reparations!
The fact that the Germans and English soldiers at the front still had peaceful feelings towards eachother is evident from the inconceivable Christmas truce in 1914 that took place in the sector of Ypres.
This incomprehensible event of peace and fraternity during the heat of the battle took also place on field sites in many other sections at the front.
The German front soldiers started on Christmas eve 1914 by singing "Silent Night" and shouting "Merry Christmas".
When the British soldiers realized that this was well-meant, they came out of their trenches and even went to exchange their Christmas presents from home.
On Christmas Day, they played football together in the no-man's-land, the piece of land between the trenches of the warring armies; ordinairy soldiers who were tired of the war could momentarily throw of the yoke of the insane war.
When the army commanders, or rather the butchers, got wind of this, these fraternizing actions were officially stricktly forbidden from above and held out very severe punishments if the fightings were not resumed immedialy. The ensuing battles would claim millions of lives on the whole front.

The modern history of the library can be traced back to 1802, the time of the restoration of the Benedictine order. The first records referring to the library date back more than a thousand years, so except for a few interruptions, it is the oldest and most valuable art collection in the country. The library now consists of approximately 400,000 volumes compared to the original 70-80 codices. In terms of topics, the collection includes every conceivable scientific discipline. The language is more often Latin, but the books were also written in Hungarian, French and German. After the restoration of the Benedictine order, the library also made great strides, it began to prosper, and the collection reached its great size through purchases, collections and legacies. The Abbey, its library and its spiritual value was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The Arch is a reproduction of the Arch of Hadrian in Athens and was constructed around 1761. Not long afterwards Admiral Anson died, and the Arch was dedicated to the Memory of the great man and his wife. The upper stage of the Arch contains two cenotaphs supporting busts of Lord Anson and his wife, while the centre contains an Aplustre, or martial trophy carved by Peter Scheemakers in 1769. This comprises of the stern of a ship with ornaments intended to represent the 'spoils of war'. In the spandrels are medallions of Neptune and Minerva establishing naval discipline. The arch had been completed sometime before this, as the mason carved the capping on the top of the monument with his name 'Richard Gillert 1766'.

fungus (plural: fungi or funguses is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as the more familiar mushrooms. These organisms are classified as a kingdom, separately from the other eukaryotic kingdoms, which by one traditional classification include Plantae, Animalia, Protozoa, and Chromista.
A characteristic that places fungi in a different kingdom from plants, bacteria, and some protists is chitin in their cell walls. Fungi, like animals, are heterotrophs; they acquire their food by absorbing dissolved molecules, typically by secreting digestive enzymes into their environment. Fungi do not photosynthesize. Growth is their means of mobility, except for spores (a few of which are flagellated), which may travel through the air or water. Fungi are the principal decomposers in ecological systems. These and other differences place fungi in a single group of related organisms, named the Eumycota (true fungi or Eumycetes), that share a common ancestor (i.e. they form a monophyletic group), an interpretation that is also strongly supported by molecular phylogenetics. This fungal group is distinct from the structurally similar myxomycetes (slime molds) and oomycetes (water molds). The discipline of biology devoted to the study of fungi is known as mycology (from the Greek μύκης mykes, mushroom). The fungus kingdom encompasses an enormous diversity of taxa with varied ecologies, life cycle strategies, and morphologies ranging from unicellular aquatic chytrids to large mushrooms. However, little is known of the true biodiversity of Kingdom Fungi, which has been estimated at 2.2 million to 3.8 million species.[5] Of these, only about 148,000 have been described,[6] with over 8,000 species known to be detrimental to plants and at least 300 that can be pathogenic to humans.[7] Ever since the pioneering 18th and 19th century taxonomical works of Carl Linnaeus, Christiaan Hendrik Persoon, and Elias Magnus Fries, fungi have been classified according to their morphology (e.g., characteristics such as spore color or microscopic features) or physiology. Advances in molecular genetics have opened the way for DNA analysis to be incorporated into taxonomy, which has sometimes challenged the historical groupings based on morphology and other traits. I was very fortunate to be directed to the Sharp-tailed Grouse lek in Grasslands National Park and even more fortunate to witness their fascinating mating rituals on three separate mornings there. I got so many unique looks and poses that I couldn't cull them down to just a handful so please excuse my lack of discipline as I flood the zone with them before moving on.
In Kyiv-Mohyla Academy of those days they taught a wide variety of disciplines. Mathematics was a part of them and it included a bunch of subjects: algebra, geometry, optics, dioptrics, physics, hydrostatics, hydraulics, architecture, mechanics and mathematical chronology.
In the XVIIIth century it was Pier Brulion who taught mathematics in Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He was the French who arrived in Kyiv with the purpose of teaching children French but turned out to be a talented math teacher. Unfortunately, we know very little about that teacher but we can say for sure that he did not lack creativity. Who else could display one of the study aids for mathematics in the courtyard of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and another one right on the central market-place of the city? That's right, in Kyiv there are two sundials designed by Pier Brulion: the second one adorns the pillars of the rotunda over the Fountain of Samson on Kontraktova Square.

Ця скульптура присвячена П'єру Брульону, вчителю математики Києво-Могилянської Академії, який подарував місту два сонячні годинники, власноруч розрахувавши їхню конструкцію. Ці годинники не тільки прикрашали місто, але й слугували студентам за посібник з математики й астрономії.
Якщо зайти у двір Києво-Могилянської академії з боку вулиці Григорія Сковороди, то побачимо на зеленому газоні дивну, на сучасний погляд, споруду: білу колону із зеленим дашком від дощу. Посередині в колону вбудований куб з дивною розміткою та бляшаними трикутниками.
Удень від цих трикутників лягають на розмітку тіні – так працює сонячний годинник. Перед нами найстаріший з навчальних посібників з математики, що зі зберігаються в Києві.
У старій Києво-Могилянській Академії викладали багато різних наук. В їх число входила і математика, під якою тоді розуміли цілий «букет» дисциплін: алгебру, геометрію, оптику, діоптріку, фізику, гідростатику, гідравліку, архітектуру, механіку і математичну хронологію. Викладав математику в Могилянці в XVIII столітті француз П'єр Брульон. Приїхавши до Києва, Брульон спочатку збирався навчати дітей французької, але виявився здібним вчителем математики. На жаль, ми мало що знаємо про цього педагога, проте одне можемо сказати точно: в винахідливості йому не відмовиш. Справді, не кожен вчитель здогадався б виставити один з навчальних посібників у дворі Академії, а другий — просто на центральній ринковій площі міста, прикрасивши ним колони ротонди над фонтаном «Самсон» на Контрактовій площі.
Пройшли сотні років. Ми звикли дізнаватися час по цифрам на смартфонах та в електронних браслетах, і розучилися читати тіні, що їх відкидають стрілки сонячного годинника на стіні. Та й самі сонячні годинники Брульона зараз залишаються точними лише половину року, бо були зроблені набагато раніше, ніж з'явився перехід на «літній час».
Але туристи досі з подивом і повагою розглядають дивну розмітку на цій колоні. А в Києво-Могилянській Академії, як і раніше, студенти вивчають математику. А ще передають з покоління у покоління жарт про старого вчителя: «Створив годинник пан Брульон, щоб вчасно з'їсти свій бульйон».

She bit her lip and whimpered, "Yes, Mistress."
"Master yourself and you will be rewarded, Little One...."
"Yes MIstress," the words spilled form her....the thought of her reward sending a shiver through her core.....her voice dripping with lust. She didn't turn her head to look at her Mistress, knowing that her voice had betrayed her....shown her Mistress that she wasn't yet ready to be rewarded......though something else deep inside her flared nearly as hot, reveling in the lesson.....wanting more.....
