The general area in and around Disaster Bay, part of the Ben Boyd National Park in the state of New South Wales, Australia, has over many years been the site of numerous shipwrecks.

The bluff formation along the beach on the right marks the mouth of the Wonboyn River which in turn leads to Wonboyn Lake just visible in behind the bluff.

I was camped 6 km away and this photo was taken just before 4.30pm and by 8pm the area was hit by thunder, lighting and torrential rain - it was a wild couple of hours.

For today's get away, a visit to Silverton, a town of around 50 people in the far west of New South Wales. The first time I visited Silverton this street was filled with double parked tourist coaches; my photo was a disaster. The next time I made it my business to be there before the coaches arrived, and even before the hotel opened.

In 1875, two men drilling a well south of the town site hit a lode of silver. Miners flooded in and Silverton was born. By 1890 the town had 3,000 inhabitants, but the high grade ore was soon depleted, and the population drifted away. Most people moved to nearby Broken Hill where an even richer silver-lead-zinc ore body was discovered.

There is a lot more to Silverton than this iconic street. There is a community of artists, mostly attracted by the colour of the country and the vibrant light. There are museums, historic buildings, ruins of houses and a church, several restaurants and some friendly donkeys who will accept handouts from anybody willing to feed them.

The tourist coaches bring visitors to have a beer at the iconic pub, it's been in quite a few movies and commercials, and then turn them loose to buy souvenirs and food from the local businesses.

Walkway thru a geothermal area that collapsed when a hot spot emerged.

Things got a lot worse than they were.

I fell over in early October and broke my leg. Was in hospital for 5 weeks and am now in a convalescent home until January. When hopefully I might just get home on two legs.

Luckily Graham now has loads of extra help, so although he's finding it difficult he's OK. Also has a very modern walking aid, so can get about a bit.

The hospital's idea of having a link to the outside world was only down in the café and for the main part I couldn't get down to it. Here is even worse as the reception for the Internet is pitiful. Am using my laptop with the "boss'" Smartphone sitting next to me.

Will try and get back to see how you all are, but that is only when Julian can lend me his phone!!

Cheddar Gorge

Driving home from Wales on Sunday I stopped at Cheddar Gorge to meet up with my friend Scott for sunset.

This is a bit of a long one so settle down for a. nice cuppa...

We met in the car park at the pack of the gorge and took the slog up the hill to the top. Everything was going well until we got to the spot where we needed to set up and Scott had realised he'd lost his phone on the way up. So, off he went looking for it while I carried on watching the sunset.

I got a few shots off and finally, Scott came back, albeit empty handed and pissed off about losing his phone. We decided to call it a day, but ladies and gentlemen, there is a twist...

As we walked back in the fading light Scott stopped randomly at various places and called to his Google assistant on his phone, and thankfully near to the spot where he thought he'd lost it he shouted OK GOOGLE and low and behold, his phone heard him and lit up like a Christmas tree!! It was hidden near a tree and probably wasn't very visible during the daylight, but the wonders of modern technology and the darker light helped us find it with no bother.

So, in the end, it was a bit of a wasted journey for Scott but at least he'd found his phone and the evening wasn't a complete disaster.

Here's the first of two shots I took, I hope you like it.

As a photographer I love taking long exposures of the movement of the waves along our often rugged coastline. The sea demands respect and I have sometimes been too close to that rouge wave. I think the gentleman in this image was a lot closer to disaster than I have been. Fortunately he wasn't swept off his feet and into the sea but it was a close thing.
