Another image from my day of shooting inside using my little make shift studio. Experimenting with different kinds of construction paper. This one being very sparkly!! The bokeh is kind of crazy!! I used an LED light (kind of bright) but it really brought out those bokeh bubbles! I placed this single flower in a crystal vase and the vase almost disappeared into the background! I also used a gray filter to just tone down the brightness just a little.

Shoshoni, Wyoming. Say good-bye, a local told me this entire block has been condemned and is slated to be torn down next week.

FEC 430 pulls out of the Trujilio & Sons industrial spur in Hialeah, FL on the FEC downtwon job. Customers have dwindled down to almost nothing on the FEC here, with the only regular remaining shippers being Florida Bulk and Trujilio & Sons and a few shippers getting served as needed. The spur to the right still serves Vision Candles, where a tank of wax is spotted every month or so. Several customers have disappeared within the last year or so: Omni Transloading once received reefers and boxcars almost daily just a year ago or so, but now appears to have consolidated all its rail traffic to another warehouse near the airport. Gilda Industries once received hoppers of flour every few weeks but no longer appears to do so. Dependable Warehousing received boxcars a few days a week but hasn't gotten service in a good year. That leaves Trujilio and Florida Bulk as daily shippers and Vision Candles, Isaac Industries, Petro Choice, and the water treatment plant with infrequent switches. Miami, FL

I usually find treecreepers really tricky to photograph. They are constantly on the move with erratic jerky movements and quickly disappear around the blind side of a tree trunk. I spotted this one as it landed on the first of a row of trees that form part of a hedgerow on a bridle path near home in West Yorkshire. It then moved along to each tree in turn which happened to be in the same direction I was headed. That's not a bad morning walk I think.

With the news of Montana Rail Link slated to disappear in 2022 I figured I'd join the club with some photos. Alas I've only spent a couple very short days along the road while in transit to other places so I have very little coverage. I hope to join the parade of visitors this next year to right some of that wrong before it's too late. But until that happens, if it does, I'll dig up a few more

The MRL has operated the former Northern Pacific mainline across its namesake state since 1987 when it entered into a long term lease of the line between Billings, MT and Sand Point, ID from NP successor Burlington Northern. While the majority of traffic on the MRL consists of overhead BNSF trains they do operate a pair of daily manifests of their own and assorted locals serving line side industries across the state.

Anyway, about 40 minutes after taking the prior shot the MRL's Livingston Local is climbing the last mile of 1.8% grade to the crest of 5702 Bozeman Pass on MRL’s 2nd Subdivision Mainline. The little train is approaching the Quinn Creek Road crossing and the west end of the 8685 ft siding at Muir here near MP 127 in command of GP35s number 404 and 405. These locomotives most assuredly feels right at home in conditions like this as they were both built new for the Rio Grande in Jan. 1965 as DRGW 3043 and 3047 respectively and spent their first three decades crossing the Rockies across the likes of legendary routes such as the Moffatt Tunnel, Tennessee Pass, and Soldier Summit. And though it looks fine in Washington Companies blue paint I sure would prefer it in black and Grande gold!

Sadly I'm sure these veterans won't be long for this world when BNSF reunites the old NP once again under it's orange and yellow banner.

After the flooding in our local reserve we got rare visitation up near the parking lot. He came out of the bushes, scurried around, looked at us quizzically, scurried some more, and then disappeared. It was a brief encounter but he was there long enough to have been able to capture some significant wildlife memories.

It looks so serene, yet this was taken on a day of fierce winds. You only have to look at the waterfall to see the wind speed . There was a brief few seconds of good light in an otherwise wild and grey day. Magnificent weather.

A pair of Northern class 142 Pacers, unit 142078 bringing up the rear, disappear around the curve at Heaton Lodge Junction with what I believe to be the late running 10.08am Wakefield Kirkgate - Huddersfield local (2O67).

Introduced from 1985 and built with just two axles they became known as Nodding Donkeys, a less than friendly reference to their poor riding qualities. Designed around a Leyland Bus body, they were seen as a cheap stop-gap until something more suitable could be introduced, but in the end would survive on the Network for around 35 years, the last members of the class being withdrawn in 2020. And not beforetime either - they had long been a touchstone for politicians and consumer groups alike referencing the gap between the quality of rolling stock in the North and that in the more affluent South.

This shot was taken in the year before the Pandemic but hasn't featured on Flickr before. Couldn't help but be drawn by the gritty combination of industry, housing and hills that are so typical of this part of West Yorkshire.

Comments off, thanks.

Thanks to my brother-in-law Mark W for this shot of an iconic Christmas beetle which has almost died out in Australian suburbs. He has recently moved to a rural property in the Brisbane (River) Valley north-east of the city and has reported seeing many of the beetles, thankfully! We haven't seen any in years and we miss the classic smell that heralded the oncoming Christmas season and their special look and little sounds.

Here is a snippet from Google AI that sums the disappearance up followed by a link to an item from the Australian Museum with background to this little special creature and more info on human's impact on its existence.

"Yes, Christmas beetles are widely reported as disappearing or declining, especially in urban areas, with scientists citing habitat loss (eucalypt trees), climate change (droughts), urban sprawl, and insecticides as likely causes, though formal long-term data is lacking, making citizen science projects crucial for tracking them. While some regions still see them, their numbers are significantly lower than in past decades, affecting Australia's iconic native insects".

Why They're Disappearing

Habitat Loss & Urbanisation: The biggest factor is the clearing of native eucalypt forests and woodlands for housing, removing the beetles' food (leaves) and breeding grounds (soil near trees).

Climate Change: Droughts and drier springs can stress eucalypts and affect beetle emergence.

Insecticides: Pesticides used in gardens harm the beetle larvae (curl grubs) in the soil and the adults.

Light Pollution: Bright city lights can disorient and attract them, leading to death.

How We Know (and Don't Know)

Anecdotal Evidence: Many Australians report seeing far fewer beetles than in the past.

Citizen Science: Projects like the CSIRO's Christmas Beetle Count and the iNaturalist app collect sightings to build data.

Lack of Formal Data: No long-term government monitoring exists, making community efforts vital to understand the true extent of the decline.

How to Help

Plant Eucalypts: Plant native trees in your garden.

Avoid Sprays: Don't use chemical sprays on your lawn or plants.

Report Sightings: Use apps like iNaturalist to log any Christmas beetles you see.

It's the unintended shot that makes my day.

A look backwards as we drive out into the desert a little south of Giza. We encountered this a lot, where sand had overtaken the road. Sometimes it was a minor drift like this that we just had to go around. Other times the road disappeared beneath the sand completely and you just follow the tracks others have left.
