It's not that they don't have addresses out in ranch land, the do. But here is a tradition that goes back well before that.
These are directions on how to get to various ranches and houses. Looking for the Curtis place? Well, just drive four miles north, turn east, then drive for another four miles and you're there!
Van Hanks? Oh, he's only 3/4 of a mile to the west!
How about Jimmy Foster's? Go three miles east, one mile south, and 3/4 miles west.
I don't know who builds these, but I've seen them in Kansas, Wyoming, and a slight variation in Adams County, Washington. They really only work when there's a grid pattern, but in Kansas that's no problem at all.

"Carefully skirts any kidney jokes, and into the meat of it with a couple of notes:
# The 1945 directory puts Kidney's butchers at the same spot. (Guy's Almanac typically flags victuallers with a "v") So the Kidney family have been subject to awful puns in Crosshaven for ~60 years.
# The same 1945 directory shows "J. Desmond" also in Pier House. But no indication as to what the business was. May query the local knowledge pool on that one.
# Fitzgibbon's shop - responsible for the gable-end adornments - is also still there. Interesting that the Street View photo shows a HB sign in almost exactly the same spot as the Lucan Ices "mural". (Hinting at a ~60 year tradition advertising their cold treats in exactly the same spot)."

During my abbreviated trip to South Dakota early this month (4-3-2016), I again visited Spearfish Canyon, most easily accessed via US highway 14-Alternate (the north end is accessed at a traffic light on East Colorado Boulevard in Spearfish). Spearfish Creek flows through this deep scenic gorge which may soon become Spearfish Canyon State Park. One of the highlights of Spearfish Canyon is the waterfalls which, until this trip, I'd only seen when frozen. Traveling south through the canyon, one passes Bridal Veil Falls, then several miles beyond, arrives in Savoy, the location of Spearfish Falls, the Spearfish Canyon Lodge and the entrance to Breakneck Gulch, a side canyon on Forest Service Road 222 that leads to Roughlock Falls, shown here. 222 is closed during the winter months and used as a snowmobile trail but one can hike either the road or a well-marked trail that both enter the Roughlock Falls Nature Area along Little Spearfish Creek.
I chose to hike the road even though the day was warm and gorgeous since there was still old, frozen snow lingering on the trail and in other shaded areas within the canyon. A flyfisherman was wading the creek (brook and brown trout inhabit the waters), where there were plenty of hints of spring greenery beginning to show, an interesting contrast to the snow that was still lingering in many places. After arriving at Roughlock Falls, I shot from a number of different vantage points but bear in mind that one is somewhat limited due to signs asking not to leave the trail and several boardwalks since this is a stream restoration site. Lighting in the deep recesses can also pose a challenge here and I've already marked it as a location to which I'd like to return and shoot again when I've more time, using some different shutter speeds, etc. Spearfish Canyon includes a number of superb scenic locations in any season, though, and is well-worth visiting if ever visiting the Black Hills.
Just one shadow partly dissolving and steadily scattering through the doorway. Light makes so much of our world and it sculpts our picture. Still we need shadow for depth and distinction to stand out and to see, even if momentarily, where the light has not reached.
Much less visited than Rosslyn Chapel on the opposite Western Bank of The North Esk river you will find The Wallace Cave. There are several Wallace Caves in Scotland. There is only one Wallace Cave in Roslin Glen. There are also caves under Hawthornden Castle. If you are going to Rosslyn Chapel I hope that you have a great visit and if you have a chance do walk in the Roslin Glen. The Castle and the Chapel retain the older name of Rosslyn and the contemporary village has the newer name of Roslin.
In the pictures uploaded to Flickr immediately before these two those two both the Focused and Focusless Fabulous Fungi a Miraculous Magical Mushroom were a joint effort. I managed in Manual Focus to capture an impressionistic rendering and a photographic view of the same rather large mushroom. My lighting expert is not on Flickr so I cannot link them locally and I do not have permission to link them further afield. He is a great companion to share a historically important cave with. Our focus on photography led us to moths and small gnats and large spiders with varying fungi and moss and lichen. The clean air just 8 miles from Edinburgh enables some fantastic growths that increase in quantity and size as you move further away from the city into more vibrant landscapes that support such greater growth. The size and vitality of the Mushroom was so unexpected that I have labelled it fabulous, miraculous and magical as it certainly appeared that way being the only such branching out extended growth from the rock face with roots nestled in a shallow crack.
The cave shows many pick marks from it having being extended and masoned sections where door and fittings have been fitted and broken away. The valley side opposite Rosslyn Chapel and Castle has a path way and viewing platforms cut into the cliff sides. The cave itself is not too large and the Mushroom as focus of attention and camera here looks quite unlikely to be natural and also at the same time possible so. It does appear like something brought in affixed and maybe even tended. There is a bed of rushes in the cave, changed annually and often dressed into the form of a sleeping figure. This Both Focused and Focusless Fabulous Fungi a Miraculous Magical Mushroom that proudly proclaims itself present and potent whilst discreetly declining any casual further investigation beyond speculation such as I have delivered here.
There is a legend of a Black Hen, don’t say Pullet, that is noted as confusing treasure seekers and grail hunters by digging holes to false terrain the site and to fill in half dug holes for when seekers return to complete their excavations and further still through special skill to carefully indicate the better and best grounds to explore through careful talon and beak soil manipulation. There are further tails of either this Black Hen, or of another such similar still don’t say Pullet, Black Hen, maybe there is just the one, or possibly there are a pair of magical soil shrouders at work? The other hen story relates to a treasure hidden under a stair. The exact stair can be correctly deduced in a manner not fully revealed within the story. Any stair testing and excavating can and will lead to the Black Hen II, this time the truth will not out*, moving the treasure when the excavators are in the right area and also the hen will bamboozle the grail hunters with special Holy Hen Acts that will confuse, strain, enrage and bring chaos to order and the ‘BH II’ wonder guard will clear up after the said chaos and restore all to proper order til the right, maybe even righteous, approach of the mythic legendary treasure grail hunter seekers who are destined to step on the right step at the right time in the right manner possibly with the left foot.
Please only read good humour and faithful following in my words above. I have followed signs to Rosslyn Chapel and parked when there were just a few spaces next to the old barn and byre. I have wandered in the beauty of the landscape and listened to the stories and here share some quickly to say that this is a place of beauty and of mystery, both of folly and of faith with a river bend bringing out rock inscribed from thousands of years ago to natural and extended caves, with castles and chapels, formerly and currently hosting services and battles til a part of the past seems to have been deeply woven here such that we choose to look at it again and again making pilgrimage and enacting rampage all engaged through marvellous mysteries and eldritch histories far beyond our fascination and into our fine fashioned fulgent fabricated fantasies.**
*Black Hen I also assured that the truth would not out, Black Hen II is not a fully fledged sequel as of course it could be one Hen, not a Pullet, successfully stealth working both grounds and stairs.
**Please do not test the Hen, or Hens, not Pullets, as you could be destroying a beautiful and historial protected place that is best left none Hen tested and none destroyed. Age, atmosphere and our antecedents have done more than enough destruction and also they had with them those that fought to give enough preservation and conservation too.

Historical research and architectural assessment indicates that this 2 storey, masonry row of terrace shops was constructed circa the 1890s. The shops have had a variety of tenants over the past century.
The shops are built on land along the main thoroughfare through Red Hill, Musgrave Road, between Federal Street (formerly Newman Street) to the east and Confederate Street to the west. Development along Musgrave Road occurred relatively early in Brisbane’s European settlement as the Enoggera Reservoir constructed in 1866 was accessed via Musgrave and Waterworks Roads. Musgrave Road was referred to as part of Petrie Terrace in the 1860s and as Waterworks Road until circa 1890. Horse drawn omnibuses provided transport to Red Hill from the 1880s. They were replaced by the electric tram along Musgrave Road in 1897, one of the earliest tramlines in Brisbane. A 1930 article in the Brisbane Courier recalls the changes over time to this important route since the 1870s:
A few other good sites on the town side of Red Hill were taken up, for Brisbane was beginning to develop as the result of an influx of immigrants by the British-India boats and houses were spreading to adjacent hills. Just over Red Hill the nucleus of a township soon was being formed……Musgrave-road [sic] today is very different from the place of the late ‘70s. The rough bush road is a well-made street, leading to at least three important suburbs. Houses and shops line the thoroughfare on either side and on the crest of the hill stands the large brick Church of St. Brigid.
The corner of Federal Street (formerly named Newman Street) and Musgrave Road was part of portions 595 and 596 granted to Isaac Markwell in 1865. Markwell almost immediately subdivided his land into the allotments which have survived until the present. The adjacent land on the corner of Confederate Street and Musgrave Road was purchased by Robert Wishart in 1875. Wishart established a drapery store on this corner which operated from the late 1870s to the late 1890s. In 1885, Wishart also purchased the subject site. In 1890 and 1891, Wishart mortgaged both sites. Perhaps this financed the construction of the present, masonry terrace building as the first record of a presence on the site in postal records occurs in the 1891 directory. This indicates that the Ithaca Shire Council Offices were at this address from at least 1891. Alternatively, an earlier building may have existed on the site before the masonry terrace was built.
The next names to appear in postal records for this section of the block are Alexander Wishart, photographer, in 1893 and Mrs Quine, fruiterer and William Quine, drayman, in 1895-96. It seems likely that the terrace building had been constructed by this time.
In 1898, Wishart sold his holdings in Musgrave Road toRobert Muter Stewart. After Stewart’s death in 1908, the subject site had several owners. Tenants during the early 1900s included John Lloyd: bootmaker; William Wright, fruiterer; William King, bootmaker; William McKenniarey, furniture dealer and Mrs Davis, newsagent.
On inspection, it appears that alterations were made to the shopfronts during the interwar period.
From the late 1910s to the 1930s, a “Japanese laundry” operated from the building. McKenniarey’s furniture shop continued to operate from this address until at least the 1940s, and a second hand furniture shop still occupies one of the shops in the building today.

WEEK 28 - “Secret” Walmart Grand Opening, Revisited
I remember promising [https://www.flickr.com/photos/97853453@N07] a photo of this store's giant directory; well, it's about a year or so late, but here you go, man :P This store has one of these posted at each entrance. What you see here is the one from the home and pharmacy side. I think this is a neat feature to have! Stores remodeled to BD2.0 are getting these as well, although they've been placing them inside their vestibules instead.

(article from the - Invermere Valley Echo newspaper, December 23, 2015) - Peterborough (now called Wilmer) quickly became a boom town as prospectors, eager to replicate Delphine’s success, flooded in and mines were established, with some lasting decades. The silver rush spread to other parts of the Kootenay region, creating other booms towns in Argenta, New Denver and, eventually the biggest find of all, the Sullivan Mine near Kimberley. The silver rush was at its height at about the same time the community changed its name, in 1902. Apparently having a small town called Peterborough in B.C. while at the same time having a larger town also called Peterborough in Ontario was cause for confusion in the Canadian postal system, so the postmistresses in Peterborough, B.C. was asked to come up with a new name for her community. At that time, everything, including the mail, came up-river from Golden on paddlewheel steamers. The mail got unloaded at Athalmer, which was called Salmon Flats then, and the postman would pick it up and bring it up to Peterborough. The postman’s name was Wilmer, so they would write Wilmer on all the mail going to Peterborough,” said Al. “So the postmistress decided just to rename the town Wilmer. That’s how Wilmer got its name. It was named after Wilmer Cleveland Wells (1840-1933) a rancher and lumberman who founded the place in the late 1890's.
The highest temperature officially recorded in Canada was at Wilmer, British Columbia: 115º F on - 19 June 1911.
The "PETERBOROUGH" Post Office was established - 1 May 1900; name changed to "WILMER" Post Office - 1 May 1902, possibly as required by Post Office Department, to avoid duplication with the much larger community of Peterborough, Ontario. A 1907 Marriage Licence was issued at Peterborough (BC Archives), but by WW I the community was well known as Wilmer. The WILMER Post Office closed - 19 March 1969.

Robert Randolph Bruce, who had arrived in the valley in 1885, established the Columbia Valley Irrigated Fruitlands Co. in 1911, which drew hundreds of gentlemen farmers from England and Scotland to the area with offers of low land prices and swift immigration. It was also Bruce who lobbied the provincial and federal governments for a highway to connect the valley with the east. Bruce’s determination to see the highway finished was rewarded in 1923 when the Banff-Windermere Highway was completed; meanwhile, the Kootenay Central Railroad had begun operating a regularly scheduled train service between Golden and Cranbrook in 1915. Robert Randolph Bruce (b. July 16, 1861 in Lhanbryde, Scotland — d. February 21, 1942 at age 80 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) was the 13th Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia from 1926 to 1931. Bruce was born in Scotland and educated at the University of Glasgow where he studied engineering. He emigrated to the United States in 1887 before arriving shortly afterward in Canada to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway surveying various new railway lines across the country. Somerset Collection is a massive luxury mall in Troy, Michigan. The mall is a sprawling 1,443,000 square feet and has two sections (north and south). About 90 percent of the tenants in the mall appear to be higher-end, but there are some middle-end stores like just about every other mall has. The mall is currently anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Crate & Barrel, Nordstrom, and Macy's.
The one anchor store that seems odd here is Macy's. It seems a little low-end for this mall; I wonder why they didn't put a Bloomingdale's here instead. I laughed when someone with a lot of money told me they though of Macy's as a discount store. I can see how Macy's would be considered "discount" after walking around this mall....
In 1967, Saks built a Saks Fifth Avenue store on the property. A single story enclosed luxury mall (Somerset Mall) was built attached to the store in 1969. Bonwit Teller was added as an anchor then. Both Bonwit Teller and Saks Fifth Avenue remodeled plus expanded over the years. In 1990, Bonwit Teller went bankrupt and shuttered all of their stores.
In 1992, the mall was reconstructed as a two-story mall and added Neiman Marcus as an anchor store. Neiman Marcus demolished and rebuilt on the site of Bonwit Teller. The new mall was called Somerset Collection. In 1996, a north side to the mall was built on the other side of Big Beaver Road. This other side of the mall is connected to the south side with a moving sidewalk over the road (skywalk). The three story north expansion brought Nordstom and Hudson's (later Marshall Field's, now Macy's) as anchor stores.
The south side of the mall has 524,700 square feet of space and the north side has 918,300 square feet of space. The mall appeared to have around a 100% occupency rate on my visit. The only stores I noticed not open were under construction to be turned into other stores. A couple retailers have more than one location in the mall, Aveda and Starbucks (full Starbucks locations, not kiosks) both have two locations inside the mall. Also, I noticed brands like Burberry, Gucci, Louis Vuitton had full stores in the mall as well as salespaces in other anchor stores (such as Saks Fifth Avenue).
Forbes Company owns this mall. Forbes also bought the former Kmart Headquarters building across the street to block another developer that wanted to build a new shopping center and swipe some stores from Somerset Collection. Nothing appears to be happing with the old Kmart Headquarters building...

Judging from the logo, this directory from the former Marlton NJ Kmart is from the 1990s. The store first opened in 1975. It was converted into a Sears Essentials in 2005 and closed in 2010.

I was asked to submit a photo of myself for a directory. It doesn't have to be formal; in fact, the sample was a man sitting in his car, taking a selfie on his phone.
But, I considered it an opportunity! I've taken serious self-portraits over the past few years, but I have different glasses, a closer shave, and a much grayer beard! I also wanted to wear a shirt with a collar, rather than the sweatshirt in my buddy icon.
This morning, I spent nearly an hour with my DSLR on a wardrobe in the spare bedroom, with natural light.
