In the direction of this photograph, there are no signs of human existence for almost 2000kms, until Golmud. Along with the Sahara and perhaps parts of Russia, this is probably one of the largest areas of land remaining without any human development.
Inspiring, really.

A second world war HF/DF (High Frequency Direction Finding) or "huff-duff" station on Garway Hill in Herefordshire, near the village of the same name. The site was reportedly constructed in 1942 but never used.
What remains today is a brick enclosure that would have housed a highly-sensitive and directional radio antenna and receiver. With this an operator would have been able to find a bearing to any radio transmission. As well as for 'spy hunting' the HF/DF sites were used to locate and guide friendly bombers returning, often in darkness, to their airfield. The bearing from multiple stations would have been used to triangulate the source of the emissions.
The site is now on a piece of common land and can be explored freely. There are two benches on the HF/DF structure for a welcome rest. On a good day I am sure the views are stunning!
Allegedly these two stones point the way to Paible (Priest's Town) and Rà, but i couldn't figure that one out!
