The original Varsity was opened in 1928 on a 70' X 120' lot with a white picket fence by a man named Frank Gordy; a man with a $2,000 nest egg and "million dollar taste buds". Through his dedication to freshness, superior quality, advanced technology and serving the best food fast, he gained a reputation that is known worldwide. "What’ll ya have…What’ll ya have?" There’s no friendlier greeting than the one you’ll receive when you step up to the counter at The Varsity. Gordy family-owned and operated since 1928, The Varsity is a downtown Atlanta institution, and The World’s Largest Drive-in Restaurant.

History of Giovanni's Shrimp Truck

Giovanni's started operating out of a converted 1953 bread truck without much more than a few recipes for great shrimp and an entrepreneurial spirit. We drove our beloved truck around the North Shore stopping along the side of the road for a couple hours at each stop to share what we thought was some pretty special food- turns out, we were the only shrimp truck around. Locals took notice and word began to spread about the delicious shrimp…

In 1996, we decided to park the truck at 56-505 Kamehameha highway in beautiful, historic Kahuku town (location seen in the photograph above). In 1997 we opened a second truck on the edge of what was then an overgrown, swampy field at 66-472 Kamehameha highway in Haleiwa town. Back then, no one wanted that land, now it's one of the busiest spots in Haleiwa!

In 2006, Giovanni's became such a part of the community that we purchased the land we were parked on and in 2010, we built a pavilion, so patrons and visitors could enjoy our shrimp, the weather and each other.

The famous Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette, Indiana. This place is pretty great. It's been on Food Network a few times.

www.triplexxxfamilyrestaurant.com/index.html

The Triple XXX Drive-In restaurant was Indiana's first drive-in, and opened in 1929. It was featured on the Food Network TV show, "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives." The atmosphere was great and the food was fantastic. I highly recommend it if you're in the neighborhood! (The neighborhood of Lafayette, Indiana)

Oh, and the Triple XXX Brand root beer is definitely the best root beer I've ever had in my life.

This omelet might have been the best ever too. It doesn't look like much, but geez it was good.

The Arcade has the honor of being Memphis’ oldest restaurant. Speros Zepatos founded the diner in 1919 after immigrating from Cephalonia, Greece. Situated at the corner of South Main Street and G.E. Patterson, the original building was a small, one story, wood framed building. Food was actualy cooked on potbelly stoves! Today, third generation owners Harry and Karan Zepatos have now handed over the keys to the fourth generation! Jeff, Kelcie, and Michael can be found running the day to day operations of the Arcade. The South Main Historic District, the whistle of the trolley, and the Arcade Restaurant… it doesn’t get any more Memphis than this!

For more information, see the history page of their website below:

arcaderestaurant.com/history/

This area just south of Downtown Memphis is known as the South Main Historic District and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 2, 1982 (with boundary increases being added on 3/8/1997, 7/9/1999, and 8/13/2013).

Food prepared in the classic Mexican tradition with a twist of the American South...Mexicue! This particular meal was found at Hurtado Barbecue in Downtown Arlington, Texas and was possibly the best meal that I ate while on our road trip anniversary vacation. Starting with the lower left and moving clockwise is smoked brisket (amazing!), burnt ends (even more amazing!), baked beans (uniquely great!), and street corn (the most amazing, unique item I think I've ever ate!!!). (We also had a Texas Twinkie...a giant jalapeño pepper stuffed with brisket and wrapped in bacon...and it was also amazing!!) If you're ever in Arlington...check this place out. It will be worth your time!

Stingy Lulu’s, the East Village retro-style luncheonette, was opened in 1992 by Karacona Cinar and featured drag queens as waitresses. The storefront later was home to the Hop Devil Grill and was empty for quite some time with for rent signs visible before becoming part of a large Starbucks a few years ago that wraps around the corner of St. Mark's Place and Avenue A. We wonder what happened to those vintage Coca-Cola signs. If anyone knows where these ended up, we would love to know (hopefully they are on display somewhere and were not thrown in a dumpster).

Nick’s Blue Diner on East 138th Street in the South Bronx was located in a 1948 Kullman model dining car. We photographed this #diner and spoke with its owner, Nick Tzivas in 2017 and he told us that it had been in business for over 40 years and was best known for its hamburgers 🍔 and served only breakfast 🍳and lunch, not dinner. We are not sure of the exact reason why this diner sadly closed in 2019 but there has been a great deal of new development in its area of the South Bronx so it may have been due to a rent increase.

Seth and Crissy Champion opened multi-award winning Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken in June, 2009. Their famous fried chicken is made from an old family recipe from Down in the Delta that is more than 40 years old. This location is in Downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee and is worth the effort if you like fried chicken even a just little bit.

Happy National Egg Cream Day everyone. In honor of this holiday, we are highlighting the oldest continuously operating luncheonette in Manhattan where you can still get an authentic egg cream, Lexington Candy Shop. The egg cream (swipe left for 2nd photo) is a quintessential New York beverage originally served in candy stores throughout the Lower East Side beginning in the 1920s. Contrary to its name, the egg cream does not contain eggs or cream but is a mixture of very cold milk, seltzer, and flavored syrup. It is believed that the name “egg cream” came from the egg-white-like foam that rose to the top of the glass. Another theory about its unusual name is that the words echt keem, Yiddish for “pure sweetness” were used to describe the drink and the Anglicized form of the words led to “egg cream.

We included our 2019 photo of this historic candy shop, which was founded in 1925 in our book “Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City’s Independent Shops, Past and Present” (swipe left for 3rd photo of page spread ) which is available in booksellers worldwide. Store Front NYC includes many of our favorite storefront photos taken using 35mm film in the early 2000s as well as many previously unpublished photos like this photo which we did not include in our previous books. We encourage you to visit @lexingtoncandyshop as entering the shop is like stepping back in time with its gorgeous vintage interior, which has not been renovated since 1948. We are huge fans of their egg creams (swipe left for 4th photo) especially their coffee-flavored egg cream but we also love their delicious milk shakes and maltedsmade using their 1940s mint green Hamilton Beach mixer.

"The name of the place doesn't get any more simpler and perfectly put.. this is truly the place for some of the best seafood anywhere! A fun place and very welcoming for everyone including kids. One thing you'll notice is the great portion sizes for the very reasonable prices. Most places that dish out seafood usually ask for the higher price tag, but these guys put the customer first and it shows. The quality and freshness of each and every meal here is just superb. Hands down, this place gets a shiny five star award.. it's just that good all around. It's an experience you soon won't forget and whether you're a passer by or local in town, you can't pass it up." ~Diner's, Drive-in's, and Dives

On Episode #102 - "That's Italian" of Diner's, Drive-in's, and Dives on Food Network, The Pizza Palace in Knoxville, Tennessee was one of the featured locations. It is a true drive-in with no inside seating so if you are not from Knoxville and can take your pizza home, plan to eat it in your car!! However, eating a pizza in the car is definitely worth a trip to the east side of Knoxville to try this great local pizza joint.

In remembrance of actor Paul Sorvino, who passed away the other day, we are highlighting the Air Line Diner in Queens where iconic scenes starring Sorvino as Paul Cicero aka Big Pauly in Martin Scorcese’s film “Goodfellas” were filmed. The Airline Diner is a Mountain View diner (built in New Jersey and transported to Queens) and opened near La Guardia Airport, adjacent to the Grand Central Pkwy in Astoria, Queens in 1952. This historic diner became part of the Jackson Hole hamburger chain in more recent years but its original neon signage (swipe left for 2nd photo) was preserved. It is a wonderful place to visit and have their delicious burgers and even the interior remains the same as it did when Goodfellas was filmed.

Tony Sirico, the actor who played “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri on the American drama series, “The Sopranos” died the other day at age 79. In his honor, we are highlighting the historic Mulberry Street Bar in the Little Italy 🇮🇹 of Manhattan where scenes from “The Sopranos” featuring the interior of the Averna Social Club were filmed. Mulberry Street Bar was a wonderful choice as it retains much of its original interior since it opened in 1908 including the towering ornate wooden back bar which is inset with mirrors as well as a pressed tin ceiling and inlaid tile floor.

I have to take a break from processing my roadtrip pictures for this extraordinary burger.

The cheese is the whole reason for getting a burger from the Squeeze Inn, not that bland American cheese, but cheddar. They put the cheese on the burger on the grill and then cover it up so that it melts nicely. This time the cook was a little distracted, as they were still getting ready for the day when I came in (I was the first customer). I don't think it usually spreads that far. It didn't the other time I went there.

The hamburger patty is just average, so next time I'll probably get the grilled cheddar cheese sandwich on sourdough.

A little history from the Sacramento Bee, 7/24/1988:

"Ken Noblett opened his original Squeeze Inn along C Street in 1982, and from the start it almost invariably was mentioned in the same breath as Jim Denny's, Tiny's and Sacramento's other landmark burger joints.

"In 1986 he lost his lease and began to look for a new site, a search that didn't end until a year later, when on March 3, 1987, he opened the new Squeeze Inn in a former coffee shop along Fruitridge Road."

I think George the Chili King has more oil and at a cheaper price. Or maybe they're selling their extra to the lube shop next door.

Fish Sandwich

- fresh hand battered

I was told the fish sandwich is made with haddock - a popular option for British "Fish and Chips". Fish was lightly fried and was moderately, if not only a touch greasy, although not obnoxiously so.

Although nicely prepared, fish sandwich had absolutely no taste - neither fish, nor batter were in any way seasoned ( there wasn't even a touch of salt), bread was flat and tasteless ( it was a garden variety burger bun), "tartar" sauce had strong preservative aftertaste and I could spot anything remotely resembling pickles, capers or herbs in that pasty, whitish spread reminiscent of worst cafeteria food.

Fries on the side were OK - they were your typical, commonplace, commercially supplied, high volume kitchen suspects. That said, those potatoes were nicely fried, but again - not seasoned ( I noticed a young lady who was wrapping the sandwiches attempt to use a table salt shaker before she passed the food on to the cashiers, but it was more of a "checkmark action" rather than anything else; her short order cook was watching tableside - why wouldn't they let him season the food, I wonder?)

I couldn't help but think how much I was looking forward to coming home and making a bowl of white rice with kimchi later during my day... I was also thinking about the "bistronomy" movement, best summarized by Tony Bourdain: we should eat fresh, simple and local, but why don't we?

Finally, I was watching young couples around me and wondered how, if at all, they would learn about food options available to them? Merritt Canteen has been serving the same food for 70 years and I am not certain if it is a good thing - luckily, we were able to change the values and norms of the past, but not the mainstream diet, for some reason.

Happy Days Diner on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights closed in December 2022 after three decades in business due to failing to pay its rent during the pandemic. In 2000, the diner’s rent was $7,750 a month and by 2020 it was $21,905. This cozy diner was popular as it had been open 24/7 and served breakfast, 🍳 lunch 🍔and dinner items at relatively affordable prices all day. The good news is that the space will be reopening soon as Montague Diner, with a new modern yet timeless interior design and a new menu serving classic diner staples including pancakes during breakfast but shifting to more elevated options at dinner such as steak frites. The new owners include producer Gabriel Nussbaum (who first spotted the for lease sign in the space while on a walk) and various partners including directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost and Halley Chambers and Kip Green, the duo who runs Margot in Fort Greene. We will be interested in seeing what the space looks like and how good and costly the food they serve will be.

Just something that caught my eye while at breakfast yesterday.

I enjoyed playing with the Nik filters with this one. It might be a bit over-done, but I like the way it turned out.

My friend and co-worker, Jason, has this thing about trying new places to eat. He saw the "Blue Plate Diner" on the TV show, "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" We just had to try out the breakfast!

Great place to eat in a great part of Kentucky. Right on the horse farms near Midway, outside of Lexington. Shot on Contax 645, 400H film.

We got a late start and so the first stop on our trip was for lunch (I have my priorities!). We had seen this place on Food Network’s program “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” and it sounded good, so we wanted to check it out. It is indeed rather dive-y -- it has no atmosphere or ambiance to speak of and you don’t want to inspect the dark corners or ceilings too closely -- but the BBQ sandwiches were very good. And, of course - this being the Wine Country - also some good wine (here, pinot noir and pinot grigio).

A very hot and humid day. I've never been happier to have a bottle of cold water and air conditioning in the car.

Just took a week vacation in LA to visit a friend. Though we did tons of activities such as Disney Land, The Getty, and a Dodger game, the thing I spent the most money on was the food

We went to five Diners, Drive-in, and Dive/ Man V. Food restaurants on this trip, each one was delicious.
