After a less-than-spectacular childhood and early adult life, Monroe signed a contract with 20th Century Fox who began her with acting, singing and dancing lessons.

20th Century Fox quickly dropped her.

She was quickly picked up by Columbia Pictures who gave her her first significant part in the 1949 musical, Ladies Of The Chorus, in which she sang two numbers.

Four years later, she was well on her way to becoming a superstar, co-starring in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, where she performed the scene-stealing “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.” in 1954, Monroe signed to RCA Victor Records and co-starred in the hit musical, There’s No Business Like Show Business.

Throughout her career, she added her distinctive voice to songs written by the likes of Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer, and Irving Berlin.

Perhaps her most lasting musical impression came on May 19, 1962 when she lead a Madison Square Garden crowd a sultry rendition of “Happy Birthday To You” for President John F. Kennedy.

Three months later, 36-year-old Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her home of a barbiturate overdose.

It will perhaps never be known if her death was accidental, suicide or murder.

Der neue Polo GTI startet durch. Mit 110 kW / 150 PS ist er der stärkste Polo seit Einführung der Baureihe vor mehr als 30 Jahren. Das Ex- und Interieur-Konzept des kraftvollen Kompakten zeigt bewusst Nähe zum legendären Golf GTI. In diesem Frühjahr wird der Polo GTI auf den ersten Märkten durchstarten.

Das Label GTI gehört zu den bekanntesten der automobilen Welt. In Verbindung mit dem Polo debütierte zuletzt 1998 ein GTI. Er war 125 PS stark und 205 km/h schnell. Nun stehen 150 PS exakt 216 km/h Höchstgeschwindigkeit gegenüber. Die weiteren Eckwerte des neuen Polo GTI:

0-auf-100-km/h-Sprint in 8,2 Sekunden, 220 Nm maximales Drehmoment (bei 1.950 U/min) und 7,8 - 7,9 Liter Durchschnittsverbrauch, je nach Ausstattung.

Die Tradition der sportlichen Polo-Topvarianten ist übrigens zwanzig Jahre alt: Sie begann 1986 mit 115 PS im Polo G40.

Analog zum Golf GTI besitzt auch der neue Polo GTI einen Turbomotor mit Ladeluftkühler. Denn wenn GTI draufsteht, sollte die richtige Drehmomentcharakteristik dahinter stehen. Im Falle des Polo GTI sorgt ein 1,8 Liter großer Fünfventil-Vierzylinder für mächtig Schub aus dem Drehzahlkeller und beste Elastizitätswerte. Während des Sprungs von 80 auf 120 km/h im vierten Gang vergehen an Bord des neuen Polo GTI lediglich 7,5 Sekunden.

Die Bedienung des Polo GTI ist trotz aller Sportlichkeit gewohnt übersichtlich, die Qualität hoch, der Stauraum groß (270 bis 1.030 Liter) und die Rückbank variabel (1/3 zu 2/3 inklusive Lehne klappbar). Für ein beruhigendes Niveau der passiven Sicherheit sorgen u.a. Front- und Seitenairbags; der Beifahrerairbag ist deaktivierbar.

Die Markteinführung ist für die erste Juni-Hälfte geplant. Der Vorverkauf hat bereits am 7. März begonnen. Die Einstiegspreise betragen für den Polo GTI 2-Türer 21.865 Euro und für den 4-Türer 22.590 Euro.
