Sadly the bee population on our earth is suffering at the hands of industry.

The Digger Bee is unique in that it makes its nest in the ground. They come back every year to forage on the Black Currant Blossoms.

I love photographing them. They are quite unique looking due to their large proboscis.

My guess would be that Digger wasn't the least bit interested in getting his picture taken today!! Gotta love that expression!

golden digger wasps are not common in this area of PA. once they dig a hole and deposit an egg they bring a stung katydid back and bury it so the hatching egg has food

Here's a Field Digger Wasp (Mellinus arvensis) with a captured fly in our Staffordshire garden today. They use the flies to provision their nests and usually fly straight back to their nest burrows with them. Occasionally though (I've seen this a couple of times before) they stop on a leaf and appear to eat some of the fly. Normally for food, these wasps feed on nectar. Interesting!

Possibly Ectemnius cephalotes. Probably not. One of many similar species as the books say.

I'm not too sure of the species or even group of this little wasp with the designer shades, resting on a Knapweed flower. I was planning on getting more whole body shots for ID, but it flew off.

I had a vague idea for the digger (and the cat) but instead stumbled across this bigger digger on the cemetery.

Our cat Digger is super friendly and firmly believes we are all here to pet her. She becomes a bit of a pest at photo sessions and demands to be petted. Veronica loves cats too so we put up with this a bit.
