The sink on the right was full of tepid water, meat, and some plant matter. It was left covered for several months, and much to our surprise had started a process that can only be described as digestion. The big chunks of meat were converted into a sort of vomitous slurry with all the associated aromas and charm.

The drain clogged on that side during cleaning. So to clear it out with got a can of compressed air and blew it into the opposite drain. This had the effect of creating a geyser of semi-digested meat that exploded out of the the sink and splattered everything.

A smooth running digestive system relies upon the best foods at the best time.Of all our physical functions, we probably focus a lot more on our digestion system than other. I make sure one factor for this is that we have a lot of opportunities to 'touch base' with our digestion system as well...

AMERICAN BURYING BEETLE

Nicrophorus americanus

Federally Listed as Endangered; State Listed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts

At only an inch and a half long, the American burying beetle is one of nature’s most efficient recyclers – they prey on carcasses, and through digestion they returning valuable nutrients to the soil. They are identified by vibrant black and orange red markings across a shiny body. This beetle once lived in 35 states but now only resides in a few, including Rhode Island and Massachusetts, where it prefers grasslands and the open understory of forests.

Habitat fragmentation is the leading cause of population decline for the American burying beetle. This fragmentation has led to a reduced number of prey species for the beetle, who also uses the carcasses for food and shelter as their larvae grow. This has lead to an overall decline in population numbers. Some populations appear to be on the rise as captive breeding and reintroductions into the wild have been successful. But special care must be taken to protect their habitat from urban development and pesticides, ensuring the beetle’s numbers will continue to climb. Land trust are an excellent way to protect undeveloped land, considering donating funds of lands to trust to preserve habitat for the future.

Food digestion....stage 2

Nowhere else is the gentle process of digestion, decay and recycling more evident than in a tropical rainforest. This one is in the Peruvian Amazon.

Some of the digestion is a bit fringe. Sure, like everywhere else there are termites. Other insects get in on the act too. Leaf cutter ants stomp around the forest floor carrying bits of snipped up leaf. They don't just eat the leaves. They harvest them to feed to the fungii they farm. It's a complex web! More peculiar still is the hoatzin, a malodorous vegan chicken which, if not for the lack of teeth, might be mistaken for an archaeopteryx.

All of those things are a bit weird and graceless. Look elsewhere and you might encounter what look like these upturned tulle skirts of fairies emerging as on this rotten log.

None of this is evil corruption. It is harvesting and recycling; both purposeful and coincidental recycling of nutrients. Nothing is wasted. We could learn a lot from the rainforest.

The waste water is treated in two parallel anaerobig digesters. By the time that the sewage reaches the WWTP, it looks like the chocolate river from Willy Wanka's Chocolate Factory.
