I noticed these flowers nearing peak as I drove by Longmont's Memorial Garden a few days ago and kept them in mind, at least what of it I still have. Many may consider that mind long lost. It has been a while since I shot action shots at the Rose Garden and decided to return near dark with an overcast sky so the light would be sucked out of the daytime. Friday night was also the return of the carney though I had low expectations for that.
Here is an interesting shot that happened on the rose garden shoot. This time I had a full second exposure but theses were in a darker spot. I used the mild telephoto this time during the exposure but max zoom range is too radical for these shots so I settled down a bit and used the monopod. The exposure started a @ 125mm. on down. Even with the heavy clouding that night, I could have used it darker yet. Perhaps I'll try again later this week. This is the result of a simple zoom that I consider successful. Only viewing captures at home later on can reveal better results. I suspect that I am getting better at these. I have gotten quite a few more keepers at the rose garden this time. I may return this week and build upon these results.
I didn’t see any fog hanging over the fields that I passed on my way to this location north of the rural town of Marulan, New South Wales, Australia, back in April. This stop was my fourth location of the night–an evening that saw me cover almost 600 km (372 mi)–and there’d been no sign of fog at any of those other places. One look at the lower left-hand quarter of my photo, though, reveals a blue-white bubble of haze entrapping the planet Jupiter, an unmistakable indicator of the high moisture content in the air.
With that much wetness in the sky, I’m surprised that the background stars are so sharp. The filigrees of dust and dark gas that are characteristic of this part of the Milky Way are almost as distinct as they are when viewed through dry air, too. Taking this photo was another one of the times when I saw the shot on my camera’s LCD, just after the shutter closed, and I let out an audible “wow!” There is a distance of about 27000 light-years between the tops of these trees and the centre of our galaxy, but here they both are, squished into the one frame of a photograph for me to marvel at. Awesome!
