This room is part of the Old Royal Palace at Prague Castle and is known as the Diet Hall. It was built in the late Gothic style and used for meetings of the Bohemian Estates. The hall is notable for its impressive ribbed vaulting and the royal throne placed beneath a canopy decorated with the emblem of Bohemia. Here, important political and judicial sessions were held, along with ceremonial events.

Despite the mixed bag of weather we've been getting lately - and a general feeling that the bird migration has been slowed by the cold nights and a couple of surprise snowfalls - there's no doubt that the spring resurgence of life on the northern prairie is underway. Therefore, over the next few days, we'll look at some signs of spring in and around Grasslands NP.

First up, this Black-tailed Prairie Dog with a mouthful of dried grass. The little rodents have been foraging now for several weeks, replacing fat reserves lost over the winter. I've watched them digging roots and clipping last year's grass, but recently they've been adding a little fresh salad to their diet.

The tide was receding leaving an amazing assembly of worm casts and tiny depressed feeding pits. They are made by lugworms who have U shaped burrows beneath the sand and seabed. They eat microorganisms and organic debris. They are eaten by curlews, oystercatchers and godwits – plus crabs and fish! Some escape and live for several years.

This nutter was sitting on a pice of wood that Mike had out back covering something and was chewing on a piece of a tree limb that was cut off during the cleanup from the Derecho. Mike said he was getting his daily dose of fiber. LOL

Seeing myself in the mirror I thought,

A diet wouldn't do me any harm,

Losing a few kilos should be helpful,

Overweight could cause some alarm.

First I tried a weight watcher's diet,

Consisting of points I must count,

Many foods allowed, even chocolate,

Though trying, I over-did the amount.

Another said drink lots of water,

Which helps to flush toxins away,

I soon gave up doing that diet,

For I sat on the loo half the day!

Then I read about eating low carb,

High protein, no bread, allowed cream,

Well I liked the sound of this one,

The food list to me was a dream.

But after a few weeks on low carb,

Things didn't work out the right way,

Was the opposite of the water diet,

For it clogged up the works every day.

Maybe a high carb one would be better,

Though no sugar or sweets like before,

Bread and cream were back on the menu,

But my sweet tooth took over once more.

I'm finished with all fad diets,

Found a balanced one holds the key,

For a bar of chocolate in both hands,

Is a well balanced diet for me!

Barred Owl

The Barred Owl (Strix varia), also known as the Northern Barred Owl, Striped Owl or, more informally, Hoot Owl, is a North American large species of owl. A member of the true owl family, Strigidae, they belong to the genus Strix, which is also the origin of the family's name under Linnaean taxonomy. Barred owls are largely native to eastern North America but have expanded their range to the west coast of North America where they are considered invasive. Mature forests are their preferred habitat, but they can also acclimate to various gradients of open woodlands. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, but this species is an opportunistic predator and is known to prey upon other small vertebrates such as birds, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as a variety of invertebrates.
