GWR 65106 on shed at Didcot on Sunday, May 22nd, 2022.

In some ways this doesn't feel so long ago, but the fact that I could photograph two Class 31s on separate Network Rail test trains with the cooling towers of Didcot Power Station in the background does rather date the image...

Cooling towers at Didcot power stations. At the time this comprised a 2000Mw Coal/Gas fired station at Didcot A and 1360Mw Combined Cycle Gas Turbine station at Didcot B.

47306 heads east through Didcot on 15th June 1992 with a short steel service from South Wales.

Didcot in 1982 looked VERY different to today, or even to just before the wires went up. No huge car park. no footbridge to access it, no maintenance shed and the yard was yet to see the upturn in traffic that occurred later in the 80s when it became a hub for domestic coal and MoD services. Its main occupants at the time were, as here, engineers wagons, MGR rakes, and storage for withdrawn SR EMUs

50 004 St Vincent approaches the station with 1A39, the 10:05 Oxford - Paddington

Aldermaston Coach Lines Scania OmniDekka W22 ACL made a guest appearance on Oxford to Didcot rail replacement work on 17th May, 2023 with myself at the helm. It was new to Nottingham City Transport as YN06 TGX.

Location: The Great Western Society's Didcot Railway Centre, Oxfordshire.

With the power station working hard in the background, Railfreight coal liveried 37274 stands in the loco holding sidings at Didcot on 20th June 1991.

Inside the shed at Didcot on a Timeline Events Charter

Stabled 'on shed' during one of the GWS's infrequent Diesel Days is this Hydraulic Duo - D1010 'Western Campaigner (masquerading as D1035 'Western Yeoman') and Hymek D7018.

Sadly neither locos were in operating condition at the time.

A FGW HST gets underway again from its Didcot stop

Recently repainted into EW&S livery, 58048 stands alone in the loco holding sidings at Didcot in August 1996.

GWR Saint No. 2999 'Lady of Legend' double heads with BR (WR) Modified Hall No. 7903 'Foremarke Hall'.

Didcot Power Station in the background and Class 1x08 3x37s 1x47 and 2x60s stabled for the weekend with further examples at Didcot Station on the 22nd May 1994.

 

All locos noted as follows: 08523 37012/065/162/264/372/892 47231/354/778 60009/10/71/72. Total 14.

FGW 166 208 on a Paddington service

50 001 Dreadnought works north out of Didcot with ECS after arriving with an evening terminating commuter service

A3 60103 Flying Scotsman is seen at Didcot GWS depot (ex 81E) during a photo event.

97302 makes a rare daylight sighting stabled at Didcot with a night time Test train. I can only assume that this was standing in for an unavailable DRS 37

Clearly 37.037 hadn't been started for some time,more than likely not since before the Xmas break,on this cold and frosty morning as can be seen by the clouds of white exhaust.

11.8.1988

A Paddington - Bristol HST (in Inter-City swallow livery) is about to depart from Didcot in July 1988. A Class 50 can be seen approaching the station in the distance - with what looks like Network SouthEast stock.
