Dec. 30, 2013: Hi everyone! "Nana (tweeting)" is going to be in another group show called "The Americans 2013" (along with two other photographs by yours truly) opening next week at Dickerman Prints -- my favorite place to make prints, and one of San Francisco's few remaining professional photo labs. The show will be up Jan. 6 through Feb. 7, 2014, and there's an opening reception on Jan. 8 from 6:30-8:30pm. If you're local, or happen to be in town that night, please come by to say hello and see the rest of the work in the show! www.dickermanprints.com/the-americans-2013/
I'm excited to report that this was one of three photographs of mine that was chosen for a show that will open at San Francisco's City Hall on Sept. 16, 2010; the show is called "Night/Light: Bay Area Photographers Take Aim After Dark." (If you're local, the opening is on Sept. 16th from 5:30-7:30pm -- please come!) More info. about the show, the jury, and the participating artists can be found here: www.sfartscommission.org/

Day 14: January 14, 2014: South San Francisco Bay
A little bit of sunset action today from the scenic corporate campus. With some time to kill between experiments, I stumbled upon a sunset, low tide, and full moon, all at the same time! What does it mean?!
This area is interesting, and these photos have me thinking about it’s history. A former industrial area before being overcome by the biotech boom, some of the past begins to emerge at low tide. Wandering through the mud this day, I came upon a series of concrete structures that are typically submerged. My guess is some sort of former pier, based on the orderly rows, but I could be completely wrong. From what I’ve been told, this particular spot used to be the home of a paint factory. Could these structures be related to that, or do they predate even this former purpose? How many times has this land changed purpose before it ended up as a biotech campus today? So many changes, so much history. Thoughts and wonders: I has many.
The pinks of the sunset sure were pretty, though.
In other news: I have a photo in the upcoming "Home" Exhibition at Dickerman Prints in San Francisco. The show runs March 22-April 10, with an opening reception tomorrow from 6:30-8 PM. I'll be there tomorrow, so come on down and stop by!

A reflection of in the lens of an antique Koronaview camera at Dickerman Prints photo lab in San Francisco.
The Korona View Camera was a wooden field camera made by Gundlach in Rochester, N.Y.. From 1900 to 1903 a simpler variant was made in two sizes for the exposure formats 6.5x8.5" and 8x10", then a more sophisticated variant followed, offered in different sizes for a variety of formats. (Wikipedia)
Dickerman Prints is a modern photographic printing lab with an old-school studio feel: a place to get a quick print, work on your images or interact with fellow artists. Our open and laid-back space fosters creativity and patrons are encouraged to examine their new prints on our viewing tables or wall displays. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see people standing around discussing their images or photography techniques over a cup tea or espresso.

The month-long retrospective got off to a great start on Friday night at SOMArts! Thank you to all of you who attended, with over 600 people visiting SOMArts to enjoy the photos and stories, meet each other, and eat some great food. It was an amazing turnout and I’m so grateful to all of you who came to celebrate the beginning of this show installed in the main gallery.
Here are the details for those of you who would like to visit the show again, or who couldn’t make the Friday night reception. I hope you can make time to visit the gallery soon.
Exhibition: November 5 – November 30, 2010
Closing reception: November 30, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Gallery hours: Tuesday – Friday 12:00 – 7:00 pm, Saturday 12:00 – 5:00 pm
There will be some free workshops offered in the next few weeks in conjunction with this show. I’ll be posting information about these classes as soon as they are available.
All of these prints were made at Dickerman Prints Photo Lab in the Mission. The quality of their work truly shows! Please pay them a visit at dickermanprints.com

Got my 30"x49" prints from Dickermans Lab. Now I need to get them cut and mounted. Didn't have enough panoramas or images with high enough resolution to print on a full sheet. I guess these will do for now. (Also iPhone bumped saturation to 11 on this photo)
HULLS: The Art of Decay in San Francisco Bay
by Jan Tiura – SF’s First Female Tugboat Captain
----------------------------------------------------
Photographed from the unique and dynamic vantage point of a tugboat’s deck - Jan Tiura’s HULLS is an up-close character study of working vessels from around the world by the first female tugboat captain in San Francisco Bay history.
During a career that has spanned 35 years as a US Coast Guard-licensed tugboat captain, Tiura has driven every type of tug from dinky single-screw tugs to towering pusher boats with enough horsepower to tow Alcatraz off its moorings.

If you've come into the lab recently (or followed Dickerman Prints on Twitter or Facebook), you know that there's some serious darkroom construction going on in the back of our lab. We know that it's been a bit loud lately, and for that we apologize. However, construction is just about done and we're putting the finishing touches on the darkroom as I type. So, before the final product is complete, here's a little preview of the work in progress. Remember when places like this were everywhere?
To learn more about our new darkroom, please follow this link.
