House abandoned after displacement of peoples and individuals because of the political violence and terrorism in the Andean peoples of the mountains of Peru. A beautiful view, a beautiful place, very close to heaven. Now nobody lives there.

Fenix is het nieuwe kunstmuseum over migratie in Rotterdam. De tentoonstelling ‘Alle Richtingen’ is opgebouwd rond zes thema's: migratie, identiteit, geluk, grens, vlucht en thuis.

Identiteit

Fenix is the new art museum about migration in Rotterdam.

The exhibition ‘All Directions’ is organized around six themes: migration, identity, fortune, border, flight and home.

Identity

Thinking in boxes is timeless. Us and them. Here and there. The past can be highlighted through contemporary versions of old paintings. Identity and stereotypes can influence each other for centuries – and history shapes this perspective. But identity isn't set in stone. Who you are is determined not only by where you come from, but also by where you're going.

"Diaspora," 2014-2015 by Omar Victor Diop (Senegal, 1980)

These staged self-portraits by Omar Victor Diop are inspired by paintings of prominent Africans from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Diop brings these life stories back into focus. At the same time, he creates a link to the present by incorporating an object related to football in each photograph. The artist thus emphasizes the similarity between then and now: these historical figures were both admired and excluded in Europe, just as African footballers are both glorified and discriminated against today.

Artist Tsedaye Makonnen's performance art "Astral Sea" The Need for Collective Refuge" at the Met Museum

From the Met Museum's website "Ethiopian-American multidisciplinary artist Tsedaye Makonnen, whose Astral Sea textiles are displayed as part of The Met's Africa & Byzantium exhibition, activates the textiles with The Need for Collective Refuge, a new site-specific performance that journeys through the history of the Byzantine Era's African diaspora. Join us for this unique processional meditation on resilience, memory and migration, which merges spiritual, ceremonial, and performative elements of the Astral Sea series and explores the power of collective action and the potential for a better future."

Weather was nice last Saturday, felt just right for some minimal tourism in the west of Frankfurt. Towards the apex of that tour, I found the Rebstockbad gone, and a heavy African accent haranguing a crowd in the distance. Arriving on the other side of the pond, I found some Nigerian party members campaigning for elections they felt pretty confident about. the crowd was small, but passion ran high.

The coffers

have been cleared

and coins pursed

from the embers.

The seeds have

been distributed

to further lands

where trees still stand

and governments are

just getting started.

The old, departed home

deprived of you

and empty of your faith

only shines with

remnant beauty

of what you once made

this place seem

to be.

Your ruins are,

like a stick

stuck in the mud,

marking your grave,

or that you

even were.

Like seeds carried

on the wind,

you have dispersed.

We can follow

the trail you walked

by stepping in the tears

settled in the mud

making fossils of

your existence.

I think I finally found an image that can convey the intense heat in Death Valley...
