October in Michigan brings some beautiful beach days, but not usually swimmable ones. This past weekend was a wonderful exception, and kids of all ages took it in.
I was asked to make a diaper cake for my sister-in-law's baby shower. Yes, those are live roses. Yes, I had to piece together strips of fabric to make the ribbon. Actually the felt ladybug did not look that enormous in person. And I never realized how much traffic drives down my street at 2:15 a.m. on a Thursday night.

For diaper, I used 2 bags of size 1 for the bottom layer and 1 bag of size newborn for top layer.
To make the flower, I used the washcloths and for flowers on the top tier, I used the baby socks.
I finished the cake with the hat I knitted with the pompom.
This cake made of 30 Huggies diapers size 1-2 (8-15 lbs.)

A runner shows off her team's costume which includes a diaper during the opening ceremonies of the 2013 Grand Teton Relays in Ashton Idaho. Evidently each member of this team DEPENDS on each other. LOL. The Relay is a 24 to 32 hour, 180 mile race from Ashton Idaho to Grand Teton Village, Wyoming across the areas mountains and valleys including the Tetons and Jackson Hole. Teams are made up of 12 members with each member running 3 legs.

My friend and I made this diaper cake for my coworker's baby shower. The top tier was less than 1 package of newborn diapers; the second was size 1 diapers, and the bottom was size 2 with a few newborn diapers added in to pack it all together tightly.
To make it, we rolled each diaper tightly starting at the waist rolling down to the crotch. We made the inner circle of diapers and tied it tightly with a piece of curling ribbon. Then we worked around that inner circle adding more diapers and tying it tightly with more ribbon. As the circle got larger, it got harder to be able to hold the diapers around the inner circles so we had one person hold the ribbon tightly without tying it while the other person placed the diapers around.
The outside was covered with burp cloths (I would have preferred receiving blankets but the only store that was open doesn't carry them...who does that?!).
I tied a piece of 1" wide sheer white ribbon with a piece of 1/2" wide pink curling ribbon. This worked to reinforce the rings, add a pretty decoration, and add a place to stick baby goodies (we had pacifiers, baby spoons and nail clippers around it).
The roses were made of baby washcloths that were folded the long way in half and then in half again, and then rolled up. Simple scotch tape kept them from unrolling, and some leaves from a fake rose stem helped them look more convincing.
It was a hit, and it's great to give a gift that's so useful!

Another one of the rescued boxes, research on the web dates this one to late 1985. Not in the greatest shape but the graphics are neat. Found this one at a garage sale last summer (It had dishes in it) I asked the sellar and she gave me the box!

One of our good friends just had another baby so to celebrate @monatheism made a little cake out of newborn diapers and asked me to photograph it for her (I'm thinking this is gonna show up on her #fb page).
I wanted to capture a very clean/somewhat muted look to the image, so I had @monatheism hold a 580EX in a shoot through umbrella directly above the diaper cake and created a bit of rim light by placing a snoot/grid 430EX behind the cake camera left. Background lighting was provided by a 550EX on the floor pointed at the wall.
Strobist info:
1 580EX II (key) 1/8 power shoot through umbrella above camera center
1 430EX (rim) 1/4 power snoot/grid behind cake off camera left
1 550EX (background) 1/4 power on floor pointed at wall camera left
Camera settings:
1/500 f/4 ISO50
Lens used:
Fixed Canon 7-21mm f/2.0-2.5 as found on a Canon PowerShot G2
