For years the Bangor Paddling pool had been left empty and neglected. The people of Bangor Community group decided that this needed to change and with the support of likeminded individuals the group secured a NatWest Community grant which they used to fund the restoration of the paddling pool.
Volunteers from the North Wales Peer Mentoring Scheme worked with the People of Bangor Community group for two days. During those two days they helped to paint the pool, fences and benches, clean up the area, unblock the pool and plant some flower beds!
Thanks to volunteers and the people of Bangor Community group the pool is now open for children and families to enjoy.
We believe that this photo illustrates that any group of people, regardless of their background or personal circumstances has the power to change their country for the better.

31st August 2012, taken in Aberbargoed in Caerphilly borough. The district hospital was closed at the end of 2010 and nearly two years later all that remains in its place is waste land. However, on the positive side the reason for the closure was part of progressing a more positive model of healthcare delivery and the community was consulted as part of this. #diaiw2012

This pointed piece of graffiti I found in a legal graffiti alley in Cardiff.
It perfectly depicts confinement, or more so solitary confinement.
Separated from society for our own perceived safety, imprisoned as a
result of our democratic laws. Have I plagiarised this image?
Thats for you to decide, the person who placed the eyes there did
so in a legal graffiti space, that person was exercising his
democratic choice of expression.
Have I merely framed it, then narrated a context?

31st August 2012, taken in Aberbargoed in Caerphilly borough. In January 2012 Aberbargoed community library was closed. Counsellor Reynolds who fought against the closure described this as a "a dark day for democracy" to Wales Online after a formal appeal to the council was refused. The library is now boarded up and empty. #diaiw2012

This photo shows a group of clients from The Peer Mentoring Scheme working together as a team with the Wildlife Trust to clear a section of woodland in a popular conservation area.
The group spent the afternoon collecting debris which was later burned in a bonfire. Because everyone worked as a team, it’s clear to see from the pile of wood behind the group how much they achieved in a few hours volunteering!
We believe that this photo illustrates that any group of people, regardless of their background or personal circumstances has the power to change their country for the better.

The Peer Mentoring Scheme helps and supports individuals who are or who have been affected by drug or alcohol misuse, to make positive, sustainable lifestyle changes.
The Peer Mentoring clients in Rhyl decided that they would like to give something back to the local community by giving up their time to clean-up a park that had become a ‘problem area’. On the 22nd of March a group of 50 volunteers spent the day volunteering in the park. The day was such a success that a second volunteering was organised in June to mark national volunteer week.
On the 6th of June 40 Volunteers worked with Denbighshire Council to remove litter and hazardous material from the park, maintain the grounds and plant some flowers and shrubs. Katharine Williams from the Denbighshire County Council's Public Realm department praised the hard work of the volunteers ‘I cannot thank you all enough for your hard work and enthusiasm in Morley Road Park today, your volunteers are a credit to your organisation! I have not seen it look so tidy in a long time if ever!’ Due to the popularity of this volunteering day, the volunteers have agreed to take responsibility to maintain the park on a regular basis

We believe that this photo captures the spirit of community leadership and people taking action within their own locality. The people in the photo are staff and clients from the North Wales Peer Mentoring Scheme. The Peer Mentoring Scheme helps and supports individuals who are or who have been affected by drug or alcohol misuse, to make positive, sustainable lifestyle changes.
Trained peer mentors encourage clients to engage in regular volunteering events that the scheme organises across North Wales. These volunteering events help to solve local problems through 3rd sector leadership and volunteer action, working alongside rather than for statutory services.
The sight of Llandudno’s Victorian streets defaced by discarded gum spurred locals to take matters into their own hands. This was the first of a growing number of schemes in which problems of neglect in North Wales neighbourhoods have been indentified and tackled at grass roots.
