Sneak preview of the 2021 Team Diabetes Walk area for National Diabtes Weeknd Events in SL!

Diabetes has changed part of my life into counting everything. How many carbs does it have per serving, how many servings am I having, how high are my blood sugars, how long did I exercise, when did I eat, when do I test. And then I write it down and keep track of it all.

For all the kids and teenagers who live with diabetes, we have a bright beautiful life ahead of us. Cure or no cure.

This week's focus for Diabetes 365 is the costs of diabetes.

For me, one of the costs of diabetes has been loosing the niceness of the nails on my toes. This is due to my cycling shoes that I wear while I bike in the Tour de Cure's for diabetes. Had I not had diabetes, this is most likely not something I would be doing.

I have pretty much managed to destroy both my pinky toes thanks to my cycling shoes. I'm not sure they'll ever have normal looking nails, they're all bruised and everything, and while I do consider this a cost of diabetes, I think I can say that it's one of the costs that I will gladly endure and that I'm thankful for (most days).

There is no cure for diabetes...

Yet!

London Dada work 617 from 2012

Overconsumption of refined and highly addictive cheaper *fructose sugar and white flour in food and drink products is the major cause of Diabetes and Obesity – with its associated illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and amputation – in the world today.

* Processed cheaper fructose sugar ( replacing cane sugar ) in typically consumed amounts and contained now in almost all refined carbohydrate foods and soft drinks has recently been found to be toxic and a major cause of obesity / Type 2 D since the 1990s.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. My 14 yo granddaughter is Type 1 and her father works for Tidepool.org, a non-profit working to build the software that will allow CGMs (monitors) and insulin pumps to communicate, essentially creating an artificial pancreas. Hoping for FDA approval in 2022! In the meantime, I'm blue through next month.

About:

14 November is World Diabetes Day, to raise awareness to this increasing problem in the modern world, several buildings around the world are 'made' blue. One of this buildings was my beloved MAS in Antwerp. So I couldn't resist and take some picture of it, so here is MAS in blue instead of red.

This image is also geotagged

Technical stuff:

Exposure: 6,0 sec sec at f/8,0 at 1 EV

Taken with: Nikon D800 with 17-35 mm f/2.8 at 32 mm

HDR from a set of 7 brackets, merged in Photomatix, tonemapped in Oloneo. Removed the Star Trails in the sky because they were more disturbing than adding something to this picture

About 2 months ago we found out our daughter has Type 1 Diabetes. These have become a part of our daily lives. She has to take insulin shots 3 times a day. I am beginning to get over my fear of needles.

She is a trooper. Already she gives her own shots, tests her own blood, records her sugar levels and watches what she eats. I am so proud of her ... she is being so responsible.

I just wish she didn't have it ... or they had a cure.

Early in the morning, a large number of people walk in the streets of Banasree to burn extra sugar out. A great percentage of middle aged people are diagnosed with Diabetes on a regular basis, which is forcing them to take a hour long walk every single day.

Two months ago my cat Mooi was diagnosed with diabetes. That means I have to inject her twice a day with insuline, at 6.30 AM and PM. She's not keen on that and neither am I. But we learn to llive with it.

A test of our new 1.8x2.0 meter diffusor.

These are the needles we've gone through since my son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes four months ago. Each one of these sharps containers holds about 150 needles. He receives 3-5 shots a day.

In four months, he's had more shots than most people will have in their entire lifetime. And then some.

Quotes from a diabetic

It could be far worse. There are lots of very unpleasant diseases to catch but diabetes is comparatively benign and well documented. If I maintain good control of my diabetes there is no reason why I can’t look forward to a long and happy life.

Knowing I have diabetes is better than not knowing I have it!
