This image came out of a silk-scarf painting workshop we had here a couple of months ago. The design was already drawn in gutta. We participants filled in the colors with the dyes supplied.

"The Serti (closing or fence) technique is the silk painting technique where designs are outlined with gutta or water-based resists, which are applied to white silk that has been pre-washed, dried and stretched (on a stretcher). Once the gutta or water-based resist has dried, it acts as a barrier for the dye or paint—keeping the color within the outlined areas of the design and allowing you to achieve sharply defined borders." Have a wondrous week, however you are celebrating, my Flickr friends! Thanks for visiting!

I'm going to still be more off than on for a while longer...

On-camera flash done good. Captured a stream of water droplets shooting over a fan-fold rainbow tie-dyed T during its first rinse.

Gramma is still a hippie at heart. :) Dharma has a great beginners kit for small groups. We dyed 6 shirts and 3 flour sack dish towels with some left over, probably enough for a small shirt or one more flour sack dish towel. And additional purchase of distilled water was required due to hard water. We already had a 3 gallon bucket with a lid, plastic garbage sacks to cover the picnic bench, and for curing the dyed shirts, and additional surgical gloves. I mixed up the dye and soda ash soak water the night before.

Happy Dyeing! Thrilled with finished chartreuse fabrics. Thank you, Dharma Trading, for your awesome Procion dyes. In this case, chartreuse. I get a lot of joy from dyeing fabrics and even more joy from wearing the finished fabrics.

I found a fantastic, sweet linen on sale at Hancock Fabrics. $5 a yard! It has lovely white rows of bows. I figured the fabric would dye wonderfully. Often embroidered threads aren't natural fibers. I suspected the threads wouldn't dye. Interestingly, the front side didn't, the back side dyed yellow. The yellow dye particles must be smaller, to penetrate those fibers.

Also dyed a cotton to line what would be the linen dress.

And a gorgeous silk scarf. These scarves always dye beautifully, always the most vibrant items in the batch.

And I think the bestest is the piece of vintage eyelet I bought from Jordana aka mylaar at a Chicago Craft Mafia Do It Your Own D*mn self craft supply sale. It's not a large piece, but I'm thinking of cutting it lengthwise, sewing the ends, making a small scarf.

Fun with Sharpie Pens. Drew this (see photo on the left) then poured alcohol on the design with a needle tip squirt bottle for a painterly graffiti like effect. Tons O' fun.

I like the finish project. I think the Elann Esprit is a bit thick, but the cotton/elastic blend really seems to fit well on the foot and is pretty forgiving. Definitely like them.

i bought white silks from here

and dyed them with kool-aid using this tutorial

this was fun. for anyone thinking of trying it, i would use a glass bowl (the tutorial said glass or plastic) - the red dye stained the plastic and transferred a bit to some the lighter colors. or just start with the lighter colors and save red and purple for last.

These are the scrubs from Dharmatrading. They kick butt for mandalas because 1. the fabric is super fine but strong- great for detail and 2. because it's a weave and not a knit like jersey (tee shirts), it doesn't leave any stretch or pucker mark at all from being bound really tightly , as sometimes tees do. This was a test, of sorts, to see how much definition could be had. Lots.

Another dress in my series of Uniforms, aka Brandy's Way of Wearing Awesome Fabrics. This one is a lovely vintage eyelet I found on Etsy. Dyed marigold yellow with Dharma Trading's Procion dye. Two covered bottons accent the darts. In seam pockets.

Putting the True in Chartreuse. Couldn't be happier with this dress I made. Less than $20 in supplies (linen, cotton, dye). Simple sleeveless dress, aka The Uniform. I made the neckline wider, straps narrower.

Getting the two last pieces off the bolt meant I had to make this dress in four parts, not two. But I made sure I aligned the embroidery lines. Added pockets in the side seams. Small darts at the waistline give it just a little bit more shape.

Here I'm wearing a shirred scoop neck shirt I bought at Target and dyed a deeper shade of chartreuse. Also wearing linen pants bought years ago at a thrift store and dyed avocado green. All dyed with Dharma Trading's fantastic Procion fiber reactive dyes.

Wearing this color makes me happy. Wearing this much of these colors make me feel exuberant!

Each 16-ounce cup holds a different dye mixture from primary colors and one fat quarter of cotton quilting fabric (PFD-prepared for dyeing).

This Low Water Immersion method of dyeing mottled fabrics is as easy as dyeing Easter eggs :-) Ambient temperatures of over 75-degrees are the ideal dye environment, and dyeing outdoors keeps the dye powder and any spills out of your kitchen.

"Color By Accident" by Ann Johnston is a great manual for learning this technique. Book, fabrics and dye supplies are available from:

Thrilled to wear this dress last Sunday.

I bought the pink denim yeeeears ago. Cut and started the dress 02.28.09. Starting drawing. Markers ran dry. Picked it back up with new markers a year later. Finished drawing. Set it down for several months and finally sewed it together the end of July. Posting it mid-September. *shrug* That's the way it goes sometimes. Most importantly, it's DONE and wearable!

First inspired by Andy Warhol's early illustrations, I drew on the denim with Marvy Broad Points, DecoFabric Opaque marker in white and the thin lines are a black Identipen.

This was the first dress I put slash pockets in. It was a little futzy to do, but well worth it.

I absolutely love wearing these dresses I make. I'm a walking canvas. If you've been thinking of decorating your existing clothes or sewing your own, go for it!

Fat quarters of hand-dyed, mottled fabrics, using powdered Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes and Soda Ash. These dyes work at temperatures over 75 -degrees, so they are a good outdoor dyeing project in the hot summer months. 100% cotton, PFD (prepared for dyeing) fabric & dyes were purchased from : www.dharmatrading.com

Behold, Blue Power Pants! I'm in a mood most foul today (dunno why) but these newly dyed cords are the antidote to the blues:

Cords = Old Navy boot cord cords in Paste (aka slightly off-white) dyed Cerulean Blue with Procion dye.

Stripey shirt = Target gray and white striped shirt dyed Peacock Blue, again Procion dye

Black shirt = Lane BryantSocks = Dharma Trading, dyed Baby Blue

Scarf = birthday gift to myself a few years ago, Filene's Basement

I am taking the Rushing Rivulet stitch pattern from the Bordhi book. Given I don't have Jennifer's exact measurements, I figured it is safer to work from a more standard pattern.

I was going to do a toe up sock so I could use all the yarn. However, Jennifer has a high arch. So my sister-in-law, Tee, who has made Jennifer socks suggested doing cuff down with a heel flap. She said it fits better for a high arch. So I am going with her suggestion.

Also, I am still not sure how much stretch/memory the 100% bamboo yarn will have. It feels like it will work well given the swatches I have done. I really should have made a pair for myself first in the 100% bamboo yarn to check the elasticity. But I want to complete these for Xmas.

I cast on 56 stitches. My swatch was 8 stitches per inch. So it should be 7 inches wide.

The weird thing was that it seemed smaller. So I figured I would increase my needle size. But after two repeats, it looks to be right around 7" wide. So I think it is okay. *crosses fingers*

I really hope they turns out well. I definitely like the yarn and I think she will too.

I have them out today for a doll experiment. Results TBA!

PS: if you are interested in these for decorating fabric, you can get them from DharmaTrading dye store. There is an online catalog.

White silk scarves, ready to be dyed. Purchased at DharmaTrading.com. On the left is the machine hemmed version, on the right is the hand-rolled hem. I prefer the machined one, as I find the hand ones very uneven. (Plus the machine hemmed ones are a lot cheaper too!)
