I found this nearly hidden pedestrian crossing while exploring the area around the main Guangzhou Railway Station. It didn't take long for trains to appear on the single track line that connects other busy routes to the station. In this view a DF11 diesel leads a passenger consist across the crossing, minutes before arriving at the station. The crossing was located in a tight space between an overpass and a row of buildings which closely line the right of way. It was guarded by familiar-looking flashing red lights and crossbucks (not visible) and was also manned by employees who raise and lower gates well before a train approaches. The timing for my visit was most fortunate. During my next visit to Guangzhou several months later the crossing was permanently closed...replaced by a pedestrian overpass with no good view of the rail lines below.

DF11 0014 brings an intercity train north on the MTR East Rail Line. The train is passing the many high-rise residential buildings of Fanling, Hong Kong. At Lo Wu the train will cross the border into China and continue on to Guangzhou.

Through train T808 from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, passing through a scenic area at Fanling, HK.
DF11 0025
After much walking and second-guessing, I finally made my way to the Guangzhou Locomotive Depot. Every locomotive type common to service in this area can be seen here, including (from left to right): DF11, DF4B, DF11G, HXD1C, HDX1D, SS8 and SS9. Several busy main lines meet in this area, and there are both freight and passenger yards adjacent to the depot, making this a very busy place.
China Railway DF11 0017 makes some noise and smoke while working through Sha Tin with intercity train T804. DF11s have a distinct chugging sound when operating under heavy load, and this unit was no exception. The Guaugzhou-bound train departed Hong Kong's Hum Hom station a short while earlier and will mingle with heavy commuter traffic on MTR's East Rail Line before crossing the border at Lo Wu.
DF11 0018 has just passed through the KCR East Rail Line station at Fo Tan on a crystal clear autumn morning in Hong Kong. Intercity train T811 will soon arrive at Hong Kong's Hung Hom Station. Within one month the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation will cease to exist, three years shy of its 100th birthday, with MTR Corporation taking over all operations.

A DF11 diesel and SS8 electric wait their turn to head east into the Guangzhou railway station while a DF4 heads for the locomotive depot for servicing. The main Guangzhou Railway Station is an extremely busy location with nearly continuous train and light engine movements. The two units pictured here will eventually couple to waiting consists that were brought to the station by yard locomotive.
A DF11 brings a lengthy passenger consist eastbound out of the Guangzhou East railway station on a beautiful spring morning. After a week of rain and humidity, the weather turned cool and mild with clear blue skies.

Addison Thomas Campbell (1846-1903)
I haven’t been able to find out too much about him yet since individual Confederate service records aren’t as detailed as the Union Army. He enlisted as a private in the 5th Infantry or “The Stonewall Brigade” in 1864. He would have been at Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania Court House (most of the Stonewall Brigade was killed or captured, with the survivors of the brigade falling back on the 2nd Virginia, which had escaped encirclement. The 249 survivors of the Stonewall Brigade were consolidated under the command of Colonel Terry of the 4th Virginia in a brigade that was made up of the remnants of 14 Virginia regiments.) Battle of Cold Harbor (although held in reserve) etc. I’ve added a link to the history of the 5th Virginia below. He may have been one of the 48 enlisted who surrendered at Appomottox Court House on April 9, 1865 but like I said I haven’t been able to find his personal service record.
