Keeping an eye on me from outside, puffing out his dewlap because he felt threatened, I think.

The impostor dropping his dewlap. He's just begging for trouble now...

Brown Anole during our visit to the Tibet-Butler Nature Preserve in Orlando, Florida July 5th, 2023. It had been nine years since I last visited the park, and I am glad I did (thanks Lila and Mac for the suggestion). The trails were marked well and the tall trees provided some nice and welcome shade on the hot sunny morning. The park is located near Windermere, Florida on Lake Tibet. The address is 8777 Winter Garden-Vineland Rd, Orlando FL 32836. There is no admission fee and it is a great way to commune with nature or do an activity that does not take a hit on your wallet!

The rabbits never cease to amaze and delight me. Maybe Bibi thinks the ring toy will protect her from unwanted feline attention.

Watched this guy have a green-off with another anole, culminating in this guy sticking out his pink and white dotted dewlap and the loser fading brown and skulking off.

The American Bulldog is a very muscular, sturdy dog with a large, powerful head and jaws. He is very strong, but agile and light on his feet. The chest is wide and the muscular neck tapers from shoulders to head. The neck may have a slight dewlap. The head is square and broad, with muscular cheeks and a furrow between the rounded eyes.

Showing his dewlap here, looking for a girlfriend!

THE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL

Spacing

Living things need space so much that they’re willing to fight, or at least threaten to fight for it. They need space to ensure an adequate food supply and mates. Many animals defend their territories by using behavior such as prancing, posturing, scent marking, and singing and using other types of calls.

Lizards on Patrol

Look at the two anole lizards on the branch below. Can you tell what the lizard on the right is doing to defend its territory? If you noticed the anole's out-stretched dewlap (or loose fold of skin), its raised crest, and its wide open mouth, you are very observant. And if you were an intruding lizard, the territorial warning conveyed by the outstretched dewlap might inhibit you from coming any closer.

The lizard defends its territory to insure that it has an adequate food supply and mates. A male may allow females and young or subordinate males to enter his territory, but vigorously defends its territory against intruding competitive males.

Anole shedding its skin, which they do many times in growth. Since taking this photo, studying them more and researching some. I have seen them all different seasons shedding their skin. Females have the white design down their back, and males don't and some of the males have a slightly raised section down their spine and the prominant flaps called dewlaps under their neck. PR is full of these little guys—I think there are maybe 15 species of them. The males have a dewlap (like this guy) under their chins that help them express their dominance.
